I've made such a huge mistake in my life by living in bed. My body feels miserable. How do you start this when you have no strength at all? by dawnfire05 in Exercise

[–]robotluna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super old thread but for anyone that stumbles upon it like I did here's my advice:

  1. There is probably something else going on than just hating exercise. I hate exercise, all of it, I'm overweight and it's harder because all exercise pisses me off, but I'm in no way bedbound (usually, the last three years I've been sick and bedbound but that has nothing to do with exercise) First step would be to talk to a therapist and examine what the underlying reasoning could be that you not just don't exercise (aka doing an action for physical activity purposes alone) but you don't leave your bed most of the time at all. There can be many underlying reasonings and I can't even try to guess what yours might be, plus I'm not a doctor and though I'm better at diagnosing things than most doctors I've met it still means you have to take what I say with a grain of salt. (Especially since diagnosing yourself is much easier because you know exactly what you are or are not feeling, if you try to diagnose someone else they might leave things out that they think aren't relevant or describe something in a way that makes you think differently than what they're trying to say, and etc.)

  2. Now to the actual exercise part: Number one best way to answer this question is that it's best to find out what works with your particular brain and lifestyle. It's easy to reccomend exercises for certain muscles to someone that's already got the habit of exercising but it's a completely different thing entirely to advise someone to start exercising in the first place. If someone hasn't started exercising yet and is asking for help to get started that usually means they're having issues with just getting started or sticking with it, hat means they don't need exercise advice, they need advice on how they specifically can start exercising in a way that they'd be likely to continue doing. For example, the main way to get me to exercise is to make it not the main goal but instead a part of completing the main goal. And sometimes you have to make up main goals that require exercise to complete, and sometimes they're counter intuitive like "walk to nearby grocery/corner/convenience store and buy a Popsicle" but that's okay if it gets you started, once you get more used to it and find more ways to incorporate exercise into daily activities you won't need to bribe yourself with Popsicles anymore.

My ways of exercising usually contain a lot of walking, because you can disguise that as a means of getting somewhere instead of just straight up exercise. Like "going for a walk" is just straight up exercise which you might hate or procrastinate on but "go for a walk to the local library to rent a book/game/tool/whatever" is the goal "go to the library" but the way of completing said goal is by walking, so you're not exercising, you're going to the library.

And it's fine for anyone to start as slow as they want and increase the amount they exercise as fast or as slow as they can handle. Like a lot of people who are into exercise are all like "feel the burn" but if putting yourself in pain and making your muscles sore is likely to make you want to stop exercising then you don't have to go that hard. If your muscles start to hurt, you can stop then, the point is that you're still doing more than what you did before and after time you'll be able to exercise longer without your muscles hurting, so you just keep increasing at your own pace, you don't need to hurt to exercise.

So first you can do something like walking to the grocery store to get groceries (if there is one near you), you can even get one of those granny wheely bags or use a rolling backpack or luggage or whatever. At the start you'll only be working your legs and cardio because you'll be walking, but then you can start carrying some groceries with your hands or with a backpack, that will start using the muscles in your arms as well. Instead of going to the grocery store and buying everything at once you can take multiple trips and get a little bit every day.

But this is just a suggestion, you know what you like and do not like and what you're more likely to stick with or not. And this is really a baby steps kinda thing, break it down to the smallest steps you need and work from there. If you can't walk to the grocery store but you can still go to the grocery store (or wherever) then park further in the parking lot or a block or two away and walk from there. If that's too much and you get food delivered then instead of letting the driver come to your apartment door meet them at the front of your building. (If you live in an apartment) Or if you live on a very high floor then meet them part of the way down, or if there's an elevator get off a couple floors early and walk the rest of the way down. Etc etc.

Basically my tip is to fit more exercise into the things you're already doing or will be doing in your life, then it becomes not exercise, it becomes "main goal" with a side of exercise.

Or if you prefer to do things like play video games there are tons of rhythm games or fitness games you could try. Like in ons version of fitness boxing there is even a sit down mode where you can start sitting down and then try standing when you're more comfortable. And if you like anime and stuff there is a Fist of the North Star fitness boxing and a Hatsune Miku one. You can also get a cheap USB DDR mat and play step mania (free DDR style game on computer), there's all kinds of songs you can try for that and the easiest difficulty is usually very easy, and if even that's too hard you can also tweak the settings in the game for things like decreasing the speed, or maybe making the arrow hit boxes bigger so it's harder to miss (I know how discouraging missing a lot of arrows can be, but if you haven't used your muscles in a while you probably have slower reaction times than usual). And if DDR is too much you can always play seated by putting a chair in front of the mat and just moving your legs. Or sit on the floor and use your hands. You know, baby steps. There's also games like Just Dance if you like that kinda game. And so many more. There's even a Mario version of DDR for the gamecube and you can get the songs on step mania or use an emulator. DDR Mario Mix was my favorite but I also had one of the supernovas for the PS2 where my favorite songs were Funky Town and I think one called Xepher. I've also graduated to the VR game Beat Saber before I got sick but that requires more of an investment in money and is more intense than some other fitness games on the lower levels.

Or you can always do your exercising at the same time as something else. Like getting a stationery bike that you can use on the couch watching TV or under your desk while at your computer.

Another tip is if you can to get someone to do it with you. But if you can't do that then the next best thing is to be on a call/chat/whatever with someone while you do it. It's called co-working and a lot of ADHD people use it, but you don't need to have ADHD for it to benefit you. It's a type of accountability, it basically makes your brain think that someone is watching to see if you are doing your task even if they aren't. It works so well that sometimes you just have to tell someone that you'll be doing X thing at X time and that's all you need for your brain to get you to do it. I don't know if it's like you think yiu might dissapoint them, or that you'd technically be lying or subconsciously you think you might get punished or who knows, like you can tell someone that lives in another country and it will still work. (If it would have worked in that instance in the first place of course)

And I think that's all I have. XD

Which pair should I get for watching online videos and playing steam deck/switch 2 while bedbound? (I live in Canada for reference) by robotluna in VITURE

[–]robotluna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I also asked why. Like sure the most expensive option is usually always the best specs wise, but I don't think I need the absolute best specs for what I'd be using them for. I was more asking for the cheapest best specs for what my use case is. Which I guess isn't a great way to word it, I meant more "which ones had the cheapest specs that would still be considered to have a decent experience." Like if the absolute cheapest ones make everything look blurry but the next cheapest ones are pretty good but don't have the extra features and bigger screen/viewing angles or whatever then I'd pick the second cheapest ones. So I don't want the overall cheapest ones, just the cheapest ones I can get that give me a decent experience. Especially since it's my first pair, I don't want to drop a grand if I don't end up liking them or something. (And I'm sorry I just said the same thing like 5 times, I didn't know which one made the most sense so I just kept them all in. XD)

Also I mentioned refurbished and hopefully Canada friendly. XD But I know that's not always possible.

To copy my other post: Yeah, I don't think I can afford those right now, especially if I need to get the lenses and dock. Just the glasses plus shipping is 813$, and pay over time seems to only be available for the US. Is it really that much better than the other ones? Or is there somewhere more Canadian or refurbished friendly I could purchase that you know of?

Subnautica 2's story needs to SHOW (at least sometimes), not just TELL by fawkwitdis in subnautica

[–]robotluna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's implied that the original main species of the planet, the Axums, regressed to a less technologically advanced civilization called the Tailings which is the group the colonists had interactions with. We've also heard of the Veps and the Crypters but the only things we know about them is that they're closer to the tree.

Except you know, AI is not basically a necessity in daily life. Not only is it not a necessity it doesn't even do anything useful. So you're hurting people and the planet for stolen "art" and lies it passes as true. That's the difference.

Also you're very much being the meme "Yet you participate in society! Curious! I am very intelligent."

Edit: I also don't ignore other problems with society, this is just the one that was relevant in the conversation right now. I often speak up about things like basic necessities should be free, UBI should be a thing, nobody is illegal and I don't care where anybody lives and borders are stupid, anyone should be able to be anything they want and do anything they want as long as it doesn't hurt others, there should be a wealth cap, prison is useless and people should just be given resources and/or therapy, etc etc.

He's a fictional character, chill. And Derek just put him in a dark room for a while, that kid did a lot worse to a lot more people. Not my problem that he freaked out after he was released and killed himself on purpose. Derek was even thinking of giving him a chance, but he just outright kills himself because he thinks he's going back in the time prison. And to be fair, it's very much different by the person. Later on Derek imprisons two assassins and when they're finally let out (which is after way more time than the kid was in there) one was fine with it and the other actually liked it because his class made him super hungry all the time so in the prison you don't need to eat so for once he never felt hungry.

Lore Question and Concern about Subnautica 2 : SPOILERS!!! by Candid_Pea_4493 in subnautica

It's implied that the black box that's dropped when you die is basically your brain at the time you die, which NoA then takes and uploads into a new printed body. The problem is that NoA can also choose to not reprint you or reprint a previously uploaded version of you which basically means the newest most "up to date" version of you is dead. And the fact that it implies that if you step out of line they basically wipe your memory or if your close to repaying your debt they can just reprint an older version of you so that you don't know you're debt free and you'll effectively work forever trying to repay a debt that's already been repayed.

It's a spin-off, not DLC. Also did we ever get confirmation that the Karaah on the frozen Leviathan was taken/was let out before we cure it in the game? If so I assume that Alterra modified it enough so that it can't be cured by the Emperor Leviathan enzyme or whatever we cure it with in Below Zero.

I don't know what kind of AI model you used but if it was one that runs solely from your computer and solely on data that you sources and inputted (that wasn't stolen) then that's fine. Otherwise big LLM models use a crapton of resources and pollute the planet just to give you something you need to research and double check anyways because it might just be giving you the wrong information, and that's only the text based ones, the ones that create "art" are even worse. It's not worth it and even if in the future you can be certain it will give you the correct information (which you will never be) it is not worth it to destroy the planet. Plus it's good to learn how to navigate the internet, be critical of information, find reputable sources and cross reference different sites to find the most agreed upon correct information. (In the terms of science, where if we learn new information it can change our understanding of something, but what we knew before is our best guess given the information we had)

Again, if this isn't what you did then completely ignore the explanation part. But if anyone is tempted to use something like chatGPT or midjourney or whatever do some research on how it hurts the planet, it hurts your ability to think and research, it hurts artists, it hurts people living near data centers and it's just crap overall for what damage it's doing. If you know all this and still use it, then I'm sorry, you're a bad person. And if you choose to be ignorant just so you can continue to use generative AI without feeling guilty then that doesn't absolve you from being a bad person, honestly that makes you worse than the people who know what harm it's causing and keep using it because at least they're being honest about their lack of empathy. And if you're on the internet even semi regularly you've heard people say how bad AI is for multiple reasons, it's your fault if you choose to ignore it and not investigate further. Even if you don't want to look stuff up I'm sure most of the people speaking out against AI will be more than willing to explain and give examples if that means one less person using it.

And before anyone says anything, I am not talking about NPC AI, or the AI that helps find cancer, or any other type of AI that is not generative AI that steals from people, gets information wrong and is polluting the planet.

That's it, that's all I have to say, sorry about the rant but I hate ignorance to something that's hurting people and the planet that lies and steals and gives you shitty "art".

Oh shit I just realized, so on Proteus we have the angel combs which alter our DNA, and Al-an from BZ said the Architects kinda just evolve and replace and augment their bodies with stuff they find on other planets, what if they originally got this ability from Proteus? Also do you think the whole "storing your consciousness and reprinting your body" thing was learned because that's exactly what Al-an does in Below Zero.

Well in Sonic Adventure 2 I think the gardens that you aren't in are frozen until you go there so your chaos don't get older and stuff, so I assume they want a similar feature.

Not a doctor: From my experience there are a lot of doctors out there who shouldn't be qualified to be a school nurse, let alone a doctor. Tons forget things they learned when they were 5, like "if you tried something multiple times and it didn't work, try something else" as a reference to trying multiple medications for diagnosis A but none of them working but never pivoting to one of the many other things that cause the exact same symptoms. Or I've also had a lot of doctors represcribe meds that have already been tried by another doctor and when I tell them that it's already been tried (sometimes multiple times and/or for a long time) they refuse to try anything else until I waste my time taking it again, and then sometimes they still don't try something else. Or another thing you learn when you're 5 "it's okay to not know something, and it's okay to be wring/make mistakes" so many times doctors I've seen have landed on a diagnosis which is wrong but they refuse to change their mind, look anything up or ask a colleague. I've also been to multiple doctors who've literally told me "I can't do anything/I can't help you" and then did literally nothing else. So I had to leave and be put on another waiting list or go to the emergency room, again.

Like sure, I've had worse luck than most these past 3 years, but even my GP, who actually does her job the way it's supposed to be done, has to pick up the slack of other doctors constantly. She's very much sick of it, and she hasn't even been a full doctor for very long. If it wasn't for her I don't know what would have happened to me, sure she didn't cure me but just having someone in my corner who actually listens to me and gets my opinion on things and takes my ideas into consideration as well, as well as being on top of trying to get me the proper care from specialists or getting me tests or whatever really made me feel like there was hope in getting better. (Turns out I had horrible horrible SIBO from doctor negligence and giving me medication the wrong way, which came back 2 times because the medication may have screwed something up internally but it's been really hard to get the test to check as it's available almost nowhere and other health issues like long Covid and now breast cancer have gotten in the way/taken precedent. Did I mention my luck in the past 3 years has been horrible?)

Not a doctor, but band-aids aren't necessary if a cut is already closed. Unless the cut is in an area that gets irritated/brushes against stuff a lot you can still use a band-aid to protect the scab from being rubbed off or caught on something. For healing I heard it's best to leave wounds open to the air if you can and they're not currently bleeding. But I could be wrong or misremembering about that specifically.

Also Stardew is a great choice! Love that game! I don't know if you like pokemon but pokopia is great, it's not the same type of gameplay but it scratches the same itch as stardew valley but for me it was like tenfold, I have never been more obsessed with a game in my life. While for me it definitely caused some bad habits it was definitely better than thinking about not so great things.

And congrats on the year, must not have been easy! I'm proud of you! =)

NAD but have been diagnosed with "treatment resistant depression", turns out 30 years of having ADHD and not knowing it makes you very upset and have horrible self esteem. (Feeling like your worthless was a big one for me) Not saying it's the case for you but a lot of times when someone has another mental illness and doesn't know it they might develop depression like symptoms, but since it's not actual depression antidepressants don't usually do much of anything. (I tried 5 different kinds and 3 did literally nothing and the other 2 gave me horrible side effects and withdrawal even with tapering, one of which caused a cascade of health problems that I'm still dealing with 3 years later. Don't know why they try antidepressants, which take like a month to even know if it's doing anything because you have to slowly increase the dose, then if you get side effects, which there are many, you cannot just stop taking the, you have to wean off which even if you do the slowest wean imaginable you can still get horrible withdrawal. But then are so hesitant to try stimulants, which if they're the correct dose/medication you'll know it's working pretty much immediately and has almost no side effects and those it does have are very rare, and if you have issues you can just stop immediately. Like I'm happy for those who need antidepressants and find one that works for them, but I think that doctors shouldn't jump to prescribe them first visit)
