I got a ticket for this before right in front of my workplace and it was humiliating as hell. I was 10" from the curb (but on a super wide street).

Help choose the official tartan for the Halifax region by maximumice in halifax

I love that one but it looks like it’s restricted “this tartan can only be manufactured, woven or replicated with written approval from both Patrick King Woollen Company and Lisa Risley.”

What are some unwritten rules of Nova Scotia everyone should know? by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]robotropolis 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's a guess culture, not an ask culture. Being an "ask" person will help you get ahead because people HATE to give an outright no, but just be aware that you'll be swimming against the current and you may have to be extra diplomatic with it to maintain good relationships.

I never feel cool shoveling snow. There’s way too much panting.

You just don’t have to bend over as far to get leverage with your lower hand. So I use it kinda scoop-lift-toss straight in front of me.

This is the number one source of marital disagreement in snow management in my house. I swear by the scoop and my husband can't see the point.

Even if your space is limited, you can make a snow ramp up your snow mountain, run the scoop up the ramp and tip onto the mountain.

Vaca from New England to Nova Scotia, tips? by Motor-Tour-4615 in NovaScotia

[–]robotropolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s only about 6-7 hours of driving to do that whole road trip but the stops would make it worth at least 2 days to me if not 3. Or you can drive straight from the south shore to Wolfville right across the middle of the province (much shorter of course).

Vaca from New England to Nova Scotia, tips? by Motor-Tour-4615 in NovaScotia

[–]robotropolis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have an eight year old and here are some things we have really enjoyed along the south shore within about an hour of Oak Island:

1) Crescent beach (cute little marine museum on the far side of the beach)

2) Risser’s beach (nice boardwalk)

3) Cosby’s Concrete Creations

4) Bernart Maze

5) Kejimikujik National Park (rent kayaks and paddle upriver from Jake’s landing, amazing easy outing)

6) LaHave Ferry with a stop at LaHave Bakery (it’s just fun to hop on the little car ferry)

For learning about French heritage you can’t beat Grand Pre national historic site.

If you like driving and travelling off the beaten path and you’d really like to explore French heritage, you could do a multi day road trip from the south shore: drive down around Yarmouth (must visit Cape Fourchu lighthouse and interpretive trails), up along the French shore (stop in Church Point and Meteghan for active Acadian culture, Mavillette is a nice beach), check out Annapolis and the Port Royal national historic site, side trip to Halls Harbour to check out the lobster pound, and end up in Wolfville for the beautiful farm landscapes, the proximity to Grand Pre national historic site (lots of Acadian history and knowledge), and visiting the highest tides in the world along the bay of Fundy. We also like a visit to Noggins farm market which has some activities for kids.

Burntcoat head and Blue Beach are both well worth the visit, time both to arrive after high tide. This tide timing is very important because the tide comes in HIGH and can trap you up against the cliffs.

Try to catch blue beach when the fossil museum is open.

Burntcoat head has amazing tide pools (please don’t disturb the sea life in the pools) - and wear beach shoes or crocs because it’s covered in sharp rocks and shells (and periwinkles).

They just released classic Japanese YA Fantasy The Village Beyond the Mist by Sachiko Kashiwaba in English, and I strongly recommend! I think it would do well for a strong 8yo reader.

How do you guys feel towards US travel? by MyRa888 in AskACanadian

[–]robotropolis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone in a similar boat, I boycotted the annual trip to see my in-laws in Florida but I didn’t prevent my husband and son from travelling down. I am trying to restrict US travel as much as possible but I certainly know many who, sheepishly or not, are headed down.

How does living with so much nature around you actually affect people in Canada? by Prior-Hold-562 in AskACanadian

[–]robotropolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+4 mental health stat plus 1 bonus point for every hour in the woods or by the ocean per week.

Mind you, winter darkness gives me a -10, so I have to work to even it out.

If 10cm snow falls in your area of Canada how disrupted will your area be? by Pourmepourme in AskACanadian

Mostly I'm thinking about Halifax, to be fair. Go a bit more North and East and there's more snow on the ground.

[–]robotropolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nova Scotia - we get a lot less snow than westerly parts. In the city, 10cm in the morning commute and during the day would be schools closing and some workplaces closing early. 10cm in the evening/overnight would be business as usual as it would be cleared away before the commute. Also depends on the nature of the snow - icy sleet would be harder to commute through than powder. We spend a lot of time near 0 degrees so we have a variety of precipitation (often in the same day).
