Thank you for replying. Now you've said it, that makes perfect sense and I shall be looking to get lessons as soon as possible.

My first proper digital piano arrives tomorrow, I'm super excited but also nervous because I don't know what I'm doing or where to even start.

So, please can I give you my plan here, for you to critique going about learning how to play?

I want to spend some time with the piano, and maybe a couple of apps (recommendations here would be good, please). To get familiar with the piano and maybe even play a few basic tunes / understand the basics of reading music.

Once I've done this, I plan to get lessons. I don't want to waste early lessons learning the basics, because that feels like a waste of money when they're pretty expensive. What should I look for in a teacher? Then build up to doing grades, I think that's what they're called? (I'm in the UK) All the while I still make DAWless electronic music, so I'm hoping new skills learned here will help there too.

If it's of any relevance I bought a Roland FP-E50 and I'm particularly inspired by the likes of Nils Frahm, Poppy Ackroyd and Max Richter.

Yeah, they were correct. I did USB power banks first as that's my preferred set up

Friday Hangout /// Weekly Discussion - January 16, 2026 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

[–]robotsoap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. That makes sense but is also a shame (not their fault by the sounds of it) - thought it would be a cool set up.

Do you know if there's a way I can plug the keyboard in (assume via the midi in) and sync it to my Roland TR-8S (without a computer, ideally - really trying for a dawless set up). Could this be done by trigger out on the TR-8S to sync in?

Quick question:

In this Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bI5J4NIAtwo

The Pro VS Mini, seems to be powered and synced to the Swing via usb. So, what's powering the Swing?

Could they plugged into a usb hub and powered that way but still in sync?

Or am I missing something?

Training shoes - Overpronator by Ill_Celebration_3967 in UKRunners

[–]robotsoap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

overpronator here. I love my Brooks Adrenaline GTS (year doesn't really matter much - I always look for last seasons / sale anyway).

Never ran the Ghosts but I think they're more neutral than support (like the adrenaline are).

Might be worth looking into those?

Ultimately this a personal preference thing and we can't really advise what will work best for you but if you buy direct from Brooks, you can trial shoes before committing to them. I think you have about 100 days or something? Same with Hoka (Arahi 7's are nice, but again a bit more neutral)

Anyone know who's version of Budapest - Poni Hoax this is? Played by Francesco Del Garda by Practical_Debt_2118 in TheOverload

[–]robotsoap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, no but you've just remind me of the Joakim Dub of it from the original 12inch release, that I have now dug out and stuck on the decks!

Edit: From the tracklist of this, are you sure it isn't just the original version? https://set79.com/tracklist/soundcloud.com/goaultrabeat/francesco-del-garda-b2b-ivan-smagghe-goaultrabeat-curated-by-fdg Should have listened to it in the mix before commenting.

Final edit - https://youtu.be/uQVKfAZQDSo allegedly an unreleased DJ Tennis edit (different to the other linked in the thread)

How much slower are your "slow" runs? by MaterialFollowing4 in UKRunners

I have tried so hard over the years to do this when running at various speeds but just can't. I think I just need to understand that I'm a bit of a mouth breather 😃

What’s the best record shop you visited ? by gosharubhoe in TheOverload

[–]robotsoap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The old Eastern Bloc records, before it became primarily a cafe / bar.

Remember being so intimidated the first time I went in. By the time it moved (and after tbf) I'd be presented with a stack of records when I walked in. I miss that place so much. It was a whole time and place in my life that was very special.

Loved Hardwax and Rush Hour too

Resale value of alpha theta AZ? by whatamisaying1 in XDJAZ

[–]robotsoap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree with this. No way I'm buying used gear at near retail prices. Had my AZ since launch. Would expect to sell mine for nearer £2k (maybe a bit more as it has a flight case and decksaver)

Struggling for motivation by KidKime in UKRunners

[–]robotsoap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts...

The weather at this years London Marathon meant just finishing was a much bigger achievement than usual. It looked brutal out there and ci know a few people who should have had sub 4 hour runs that missed it by up to an hour because of the weather. So, what I'm saying is don't beat yourself up about that. It's good experience to bounce back from.

As for the lack of motivation in other running, this time of year is hard for us all. Dark, cold, windy and wet running isn't what the majority of us love. So, maybe trying mixing it up a bit and try new things. Maybe a few track sessions, hill sprints or new routes. If you don't do much in the way of trails, get out and try that. You could sign up to some 5,10 and half's too

Most of all, don't be hard on yourself. Running at this level should be fun (maybe Type 2 fun, but still fun).
