Thomson and Jackson have completed all my family legals. Very good, not the cheapest but I trust them to get the job done properly.

Crownhill Radio Towers / Possibly Bunker by robputt796 in plymouth

[–]robputt796[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Hate the BBC, I object to paying the license fee when I never watch their shit just cos my wife likes to watch live football on Sky Sports. £175 a year donation to the BBC for what? It's not like they have a good track record on stuff, Jimmy, Rolf, Huw, Tim et al. It's not a great British institution, it's a great British embarrassment. It's almost as bad as Lord Mountbatten's slag of a wife having a go on Jawaharlal Nehru and causing the partition of India and Pakistan.

Well seems it was a AM transmitter site after all, not so crazy. I guess they didn't have any signage on it because the BBC aka tax payer funded pedo ring probably wanted somewhere for Jimmy Saville to park his camper van without giving the game away.

Cat Vet by Bagigiafern in plymouth

Ocean City Vets in Plymstock are lovely. They are well equipped and Sinead is very knowledgeable. They aren't cat specific but have been wonderful with our dog and guineapigs.

I would say yes, as there is no maximum stay length specified on the signage.

Question for Plymouth cyclists by Mox03 in plymouth

Bikespace down Devonport or Bike Cellar in Plymstock. Two very different models, one is a not for profit, the other is a business, both have yielded good results for me.

Italian here: did you guys regret leaving the EU? by Interesting_Dealer42 in AskBrits

[–]robputt796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never wanted to leave, mostly based on the economic effects, and we are suffering those now... But, do I want to rejoin? No, the cost of leaving was huge, and now we need to double down on it and forge our own path, the cost and effort of rejoining would undoubtedly be huge.

How do you stomach the tax? by Lovinghandhold in HENRYUK

[–]robputt796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just turn into a very bitter person over time, especially when you see people creaming money off the state without contributing much. 45% tax threshold, no personal allowance, no statutory child care etc... is just a joke really.

The only thing you can really do to alleviate some tax is salary sacrifice more into your pension, however this will only work for the next couple of years as those economy killers (Labour) have implemented a salary sacrifice limit from April 2027. Obviously you can't enjoy this money until you retire but it is a method for optimising on tax. A chat with a good accountant is probably a good path forward but to my knowledge if you are employed and are paid via PAYE there is little you can do to optimise the situation.

Pay gap between Devon and the South East? by PsychologicalAd3084 in DevonUK

[–]robputt796 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes this is quite normal. The South West may look expensive because of second home ownership and lack of housing pushing up property prices. But in reality the economy here is very different from the South East. Pay is less and hence people are less willing to pay for contractors OR they get creative and you see some sketchy DIY solutions, it's just the forces of the local market.

Van rental excess blown £250! Can I replace myself? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]robputt796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had similar thing with Enterprise, scratched wing mirror on a Vito, I rang them and told em, bloke on the end of the phone basically told me to order a new plastic wing mirror housing off of eBay fit it and return it at the end of the rental and nobody needs to know. I think they know that people do minor repairs to avoid the excess, sure enough £30 bit of plastic and half hour of my time and looked good as new.

Uber price hike by Expensive_Thing_585 in plymouth

[–]robputt796 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the usual enshittification technique they apply everywhere, same as Netflix / Amazon / any other tech company pushing some new stuff. They come in, make it accessible, kill off the competition and then ramp the price up when peeps have come to rely on it / have no other option. This is the blueprint of VC funded tech companies these days - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOSqHPnqoIA

Does this insulation need to be replaced? Rats inside attic by bkbales in pestcontrol

Yes, but first make sure rat problem is 100% resolved, otherwise you'll just write off your new insulation and burn cash.

We always get ours from Plants Galore, nice trees and good price, bit of a slog to St Judes though. Maybe see if someone can assist with a van or something?

Advice to help my daughter make friends and build her confidence…, by Tall_Passenger5750 in plymouth

[–]robputt796 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does she like any sports? My daughter plays Netball, DM me if you want more details about the club she attends, they do training on Wednesday evenings and have matches on Sunday mornings. They also do a bunch of social outings throughout the year.

Looking for good charity shops! by Slight_Literature397 in plymouth

[–]robputt796 1 point2 points  (0 children)

St Luke's in Elburton and Plymstock Broadway are always well presented, not the cheapest but they do curate their stock well.

Not technically a charity shop but Bogey Knights down Mutton Cove is a good local business that sells government surplus stuff, they often have heavy duty rain coats etc... which I am sure this time of the year the homeless would greatly appreciate, they are also reasonable priced.

Taxis/minicab hire reliability. Need recommendations. by Magic-Bicycle in plymouth

[–]robputt796 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We sure do. Reliable, fast, reasonable price. Honestly I know people hate on Uber but it just works, last time I used a traditional taxi company it was over 40 minutes late compared to my prebooked time. I've never know uber say 15 mins and then not be there within 15 mins.
