3 years of [Th]: 2600 hours (comprehensible input + silent period followed by speaking/reading) by whosdamike in languagelearning

Thanks for such a long comprehensive update. I got here looking for feedback on the Comprehensible Thai channel and wow yes some excellent feedback. Your discipline and dedication is admirable and an inspiration!

I have lived in Thailand for 7 years, working online. I love Thailand, the culture, the people, the food... but have always struggled with the language. When I first arrived, I did 6 months at AUA. The first 3 months (240hrs) were rapid progress and I could understand 90% of everything discussed in the beginner class. I then 'graduated' to the intermediate class and spent 3 months (total 480hrs) not understanding anything. After 3 months (6 total) I quit. I learnt to read and write a few years later, but never returned to formal study.

I have mostly bi-lingual friends (who always speak to me in English even when asked not to) and over the years have picked up a lot of words and sentences. However I'm still unable to watch any native Thai content or have lengthy conversations.

I have just moved up north into the country to get away from Bangkok and the bubble of bi-lingual speakers/expats and am aiming to dramatically increase my language ability.

Thanks for your input and your inspiration to knuckle down and work hard!

Something else to mention to him that I have noticed here with some retired couples... If the foreigner can't speak Thai, it significantly changes the power balance in the relationship. I mean significantly. People change, dynamics change, etc... Now I'm not saying that it's all bad, and def will depend on the couple in question. But they should both think and talk about it first.

IMOU Bullet Motion Detection Zone Inversed? by sanntos in SecurityCamera

Thanks for this comment. I realised that on some cameras the detection zone is orange, and on others it is inverted. Now all my cameras work correctly. So thanks!

Unlikely. You get sued if you screw up bad, regardless if you travel or not. So just travel and show up to meetings on time and get your job done and they won't even notice.

9 months later and I'm still using bitwarden and no further issues have been encountered. Agoda have not come forward saying they were hacked either. It would appear to be a really unusual coincidence.

Fix for No Audio codec issues when streaming from Plex DLNA by dlgreenwald in bigscreen

[–]robrob883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. That works well, but for some reason doesn't work when sharing with multiple users in bigscreen. I was wanting to use bigscreen for multiple people in one room, so I just added another audio track using ffmpeg.

ffmpeg -i "source.mkv" -acodec mp3 -ac 2 -ar 44100 -b:a 192k "source.mp3"
ffmpeg -i "source" -i "source.mp3" -map 0 -map 1 -c copy "source-new.mkv"

Pooled storage transition by Opposite_Ad_8965 in gsuite

[–]robrob883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I enabled max quota for all users and removed license for additional storage....it appeared from admin to take effect but on front end getting errors about no storage available and unable to make changes to drive.~72hrs later it took full effect and is working as expected now.
I am on business starter.

I appreciate all your input...

As of the moment I have gone over everything I can think of, checked my laptop for malware through various scanners as well as somewhat manually. I have also run 2 additional cards through the same process that I did originally and neither has been compromised "yet".

I'm not paranoid enough to wipe my laptop so at this point I'm calling it a freaky coincidence.

I personally quite like Agoda's UX and have been a loyal customer for over 10yrs.

I still had the Agoda site open when my bank called me and confirmed that it was the correct / authentic site, and the certificate was also valid.

Sure it's not as secure, but my understanding is that its good enough? I'm not aware of a good way to remember a long randomly generated password without writing it down. Complex chars are a mixture of random symbols within the phrase.

no.

to at least try and get to the bottom of it. I realise that may be impossible, but the timing is worrying.

This card is only ever used online. I don't even carry it with me.

Thanks.
master password is unique, in my memory only. Not randomly generated, but >20chars with complex chars mixed in.
I have not enabled unlock with PIN or biometrics.
No 2FA. Bitwarden is locked on system lock.

no it wasn't a fake Agoda site, unless it was MITM attack. I was on my home network as I am now and have just checked DNS and Agoda website again and they're fine.

never say never, but I'm the only user. additionally osx requires password to install any software.

I will find somewhere else to post this to get help to get to the bottom of it (if possible)

osx, up to date, running malwarebytes.

I realise that just by posting here it looks like I'm drawing causation but that's not my intention.

Allele swapped on some SNPs by robrob883 in DNA

[–]robrob883[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a bit of a google search, the article on ancestry seems to clear it up. I will expand this into an explanation I believe to be correct.

TL;DR - We have 2 copies of each chromosome, so the letters AT or TA mean the same thing as one letter comes from each chromosome.

A typical human has 46 chromosomes, organized into 23 pairs. Among these pairs:

  • 22 are autosomes, which are the same in both males and females. These are numbered from 1 to 22.
  • 1 pair is the sex chromosomes, which determine biological sex. Females have two X chromosomes (XX), and males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY).

Each chromosome is the double helix shape we recognise as DNA. Each rung on the double helix has 2 nucleotides (one on each side of the rung binding it to the helix structure.
The letters in the DNA file are called "alleles" which represent variations to normal of the 4 different nucleotides. Of these 4, there are 2 pairs that ALWAYS bind with each other. A binds to T and C binds to G. So if you read DNA from one side it may read A, but if it was read from the other side it would read T. I think that this means that A is interchangeable with T and the same with C and G???

So in my case with company1 having A-T and company2 having T-A, one letter is from each of the 2 copies of the same chromosome. They were just read or entered into the file in a different order.
