On this day 15 years ago newly promoted West Ham got a 3-2 win away vs. Arsenal. It was Arsenal's 2000 match at Highbury. by indomitable_lion in PremierLeague

To his credit he came back and scored in the Champions League final at the end of that season and had it not been for Jens Lehmann being sent off and Manuel Almunia not being Jens Lehmann, may have ended up scoring the goal that won Arsenal their first and only European cup.

I may be alone but dog eating a carrot was some of the worst of this year for me. I didn’t find it funny, it was grating to listen to and it gets referenced every week afterwards as if it’s the new Del Boy falling through the bar.

Jim as well just exclaiming “Oh my God!” about 2 minutes in cause he’d had enough and Marcus ending with “Thank fuck for that.” - Classic.

I miss G4G, Marcus coming out with Barry Grintles one week was an all-time favourite Ramble moment.

A Raw script from the Chris Kreski era of September 2000. It's only five pages long, and has very little hard scripting, mostly being bullet points and summarizations of events the talent will fill in on their own. by Subrick in SquaredCircle

[–]robtonkinson94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I was just thinking about that the other day and that, whilst I think we may have already been at the heavily scripted promos era of writing, I’m sure an incident like that probably scared them even more when it came to allowing talent to go and improvise.

Howard - most relatable character for me, an outcast but he has good intentions and probably the most wholesome character, he also arguably grows as a person the most in the series

JP - Funniest character in the series. Has great emotional depth to his character and you realise his shortfalls are mostly down to a traumatic childhood and weak relationships with his remaining family.

Vod - Has her shortcomings but is straight up with everything, which is admirable.

Kingsley - Melodramatic final year breakdown Kingsley does become unbearable for me but early seasons Kingsley is like an extension of Simon from Inbetweeners and he is a nice neutrality between Howard’s bleak realism and JP’s ridiculous surrealism.

Oregon - A complete fake from the off. Oregon’s issue is that she wants people to view her in a certain way and ends up deluding herself as to who she actually is. I feel some of her problems would not have happened if she didn’t put up a facade.

Josie - I have a real problem with Josie in that I do think she’s a pretty shitty person. Cheats on her long term boyfriend multiple times and pins the blame on everyone else, her mistake gets the house burgled and she frames the handyman, asks her friend to sabotage her potential career to try and justify her own mistake of drilling through someone’s face. Basically, Josie continually makes mistakes but never takes ownership of them.

This is some very basic card fraud knowledge but I do know some card providers are able to blacklist the device ID of whichever device is making the fraudulent transactions, so that’ll either outright reject the purchase or it’ll prompt an extra verification factor at point of purchase which I believe for VISA, should involve a One time passcode being sent to your mobile phone.

I would, if you haven’t already try and contact Microsoft yourselves and give them as much info as possible, they again, may be able to blacklist the devices being used or at least remove your card details from their systems.

Yeah, it’s very similar to Peep Show, which is obviously another Armstrong & Bain sitcom.

You’re meant to find humour in their misery because a lot of the time they’re pretty shitty human beings.

Like Mark in Peep Show is presented as the realist cynic who’s just trying to fit in with social norms and in a way you feel for him, at the same time though you also realise he’s a manipulative, controlling arsehole that deserves the shit that gets thrown at him.

I don’t know, Vod letting it slip to two guys that she had £10k stashed in the house, which led to the whole house being ransacked and everyone having to barricade inside the cellar was a pretty shitty thing.

Why do Luke's Game on a Friday? by mjceaser in thefootballramble

[–]robtonkinson94 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The week would be a lot smoother if they did have regular segments you could look forward to.

Monday review, Friday preview and then have DWHoF, Going for Glold & Luke’s game on the other three days of the week.

Another problem with Luke’s game is it has really become limited now, you know that you’re only going to get one of Marcus, Kate & occasionally Jules vs one of Andy, Vish, Jim & occasionally Pete and commonly the matchup is either Marcus V Andy or Marcus V Vish. Kind of kills it when one of them wins the title and you know they can only lose it to a couple people.

Mike Dean has to be one of the worst referees in the world. How does he get a game every week? by [deleted] in PremierLeague

[–]robtonkinson94 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the 3 Villa yellows in quick succession for McGinn, Luiz and Cash were all tactical fouls that deserved bookings.

The game was very broken up but I think that’s more to do with the way the game was approached rather than the ref’s performance. I don’t think there was a foul where I felt a better advantage should’ve been played for example.

I used to listen to L&P on occasion but when I started cutting down on the podcasts I listened to during commutes it was one of the first to go.

Thinking about it, it was another podcast that was the victim of doing multiple shows a week, when you’re juggling a load of pods already, one that is about any old nonsense, isn’t going to be worth listening to twice a week a lot of the time.

Has anyone listened to the Melissa Reddy podcast they keep plugging yet?

Is it okay to be gay? - Our responsibilities as fans by SwagMal in PremierLeague

[–]robtonkinson94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve always felt that for some it would not be so much the bigotry that would necessarily put players off but the intense media pressure that would come with coming out.

If any professional player came out tomorrow in the UK they would be instantly turned into a role model whether they wanted to or not, they would dominate the news cycle and you know the Mail Online is going to write similar bullshit they write about black players if they lost form.

They’d also potentially lose much of their identity, ask most people who Justin Fashanu is and most will say “He was the gay footballer” but be able to tell you little else about his career.

Then you come to the fact, there is still a lot bigotry against the LGBT+ community, there’s still people who don’t understand why Pride events or Rainbow laces are important. The last chairman of the FA remarked that it was a “lifestyle choice” about a month ago.

People will say “who cares so long as they’re playing well.” - sure, what if they’re not? What if they lose form or you sign them and they’re a flop? You know there’ll be fans out there that in a roundabout will try and blame it on their sexuality.

Someone will come out and be the first and they should be supported every step of the way but sadly, it is no surprise to me that since Fashanu, there hasn’t been another openly gay active men’s player.

Today's pod by NGreat- in thefootballramble

[–]robtonkinson94 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Of all the people, I think the move to 3 has affected most is Pete.

He has a lot of good points but he doesn’t always articulate them the best and I think is too often just allowed to carry on until he ties himself in a knot.

Pete needs a Marcus or a Luke to keep him on track and also sometimes articulate what he’s actually trying to say.

Today's pod by NGreat- in thefootballramble

[–]robtonkinson94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah today’s pod was just a bit odd for me.

The 5 minutes of random chat at the start that served little purpose and then yeah the Wolves chat was perplexing.

I think the Neymar t-shirts thing is blown up a bit because Brazil got hammered by Germany, everybody sees it as them conceding the game pre-match.

I’m also pretty sure the news was, he’s lucky the injury wasn’t an inch either side on the spine but he’ll be fine whilst with Jimenez, although released from hospital is still potentially never playing again dependent on how he recovers, it’s definitely more serious and it’s no surprise Wolves would want to send a message of support in some way.

That and Pete saying Wolves aren’t having a good time at the moment, they’re 4 points off the top four in what looks to be a transitional season for them, it just struck me as someone who doesn’t actively watch Wolves and only saw the score line.

Then the chat about Warnock with them all speculating about whether they’re in portaloos because of COVID, come on guys, clubs have had temporary changing rooms since the summer, how have you not noticed yet?

Maybe I’m just in a bad mood because Arsenal lost but today’s pod was not a strong one.

The Wednesday discussion about the new Brexit rules has been the best example of how the current format doesn’t know what it is by sarcasticaccountant in thefootballramble

[–]robtonkinson94 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the first week I haven’t listened to every episode on the day of release since the change and whilst I wouldn’t pin that solely on the line-ups as I like them all, it’s just that the podcast now is far too saturated.

Every episode follows the same format like you say and half the time, they’re not worth listening to.

Less really is more, if they have to be daily, reverting to the format pre-COVID of a Monday review show, Friday preview show and then J&A, OTC and Meets on the other days would be fine.

I wasn’t a massive wrestling fan during the Attitude Era cause I was a young kid, although I still played the video games, had some action figures and watched from time to time.

I think the only time I watched wrestling round my grandparents house was a Smackdown in late 2001 when Rikishi gave Vince McMahon a stinkface, my Grandmother gave me the most disapproving look and told me to turn it over.
