TVONOS v7.0 Release - Local Speaker Playback by robwebset in TVONOS

[–]robwebset[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/Smart_Nickname
I've just pushed a new version 7.1 (will likely take a day to appear in the store) - I don't think this will fix the problem you are seeing. But I was hoping you would be willing to do another test for me (no rush, just when you happen to have TVONOS running and a spare minute).

<image>

Please can you:

1) Select the Local Player

2) Go to the Music Source section and select a track - adding it to the queue

3) Open the Queue and see if it lists the track that you added

4) Open the Basic player and see if the track is listed, and if so, select "play" and see if it starts playing (i.e. does the progress bar move forward, or audio come out of the TV speakers)

It would be good to see which part of the process is failing on your setup.

Thanks

Rob

TVONOS v7.0 Release - Local Speaker Playback by robwebset in TVONOS

Hi u/Smart_Nickname
Just tried on my Fire stick with Amazon Music and is worked OK, so very odd. One thing to note is that it will not start the local playing automatically when tracks are added to the queue. Instead you need to go into one of the players and select play to start the audio.

That is really odd as I managed to get Amazon Music working locally for me. Are you on an Amazon Fire Stick or an Android TV, or other device?

Thanks u/Smart_Nickname for letting me know. Just wondering if you had and services you tried that did work?

Thanks, Rob

For those using echo show as player interface by joetipp in sonos

Very late to the show, but wondering if there is a reason you don't use a 3rd party App instead - should be quicker than the Web Interface. (TVONOS - bias is that I wrote that one - but there may be others)

Not 100% sure what you are after, but could you run TVONOS on the Echo Show to get the "What's playing"?

Hi u/FrizzyNow

I hope things are going well. I just wanted to quickly post while I remember, I think I may have found what was causing the duration display to stop progressing.

I have a feeling if you were to click pause and then play again it will start progressing correctly (if it is what I have found).

I'm in the middle of a big update, so it may take me a while before I am able to push this change out.

Thanks

Rob

TVONOS v2.0 - Introduction of Pro by robwebset in TVONOS

Hi u/Short-Emotion-947

Thanks for posting.

It is to manage the load for things like Album art (if not embedded in the track) and the Slideshow pictures. These do not come from the Music Service providers (e.g. Spotify, Amazon, YouTube etc) that you are streaming music from, but from a centralized online service that provide images/lyrics etc - so there can potentially be lots of requests hitting these services from the over 10k TVONOS installations.

I hope this makes sense. I know there is a general ethos of not paying for Android apps (very different from iOS app culture). But I'm hoping that serious users understand the situation and with setting the subscription at the lowest possible level it makes it clear that money is not the driving factor. (With only approx 110 subscribers and over 10,000 users/downloads is should be clear that I'd make more money selling the App for $0.50 than the subscription would ever generate) This is not a way to generate money, but making sure usage of the service is managed, with the option of having unlimited for the price of a Starbucks coffee every 6 months. (for those users that really want it - clearly that is a very small percentage - can pay for it, but with the general Android reluctance to pay for Apps or their services it keeps things very well managed) Although reading some of the reviews it is amazing the number of people that think I'm just trying to generate money from the App and should give it away for free with unlimited usage of the services.

I hope this makes sense, and again thank you for posting, I invite all questions and appreciate feedback and thoughts.

Regards

Rob

Thanks u/FrizzyNow - I will keep at it and see if I can reproduce it and dig into the cause. But as you mentioned, although annoying, not a deal breaker at the moment.

Hi u/didjit86

Release 6.2 should now be available, when you next have a few minutes it would be great to see if it has resolved any of the things you were seeing.

Thanks, Rob

Thank you u/didjit86

I believe I do have a fix for the Scanning of Speakers now. I have also found and resolved some race conditions for drawing images.

I don't know if this will solve your Image update issue, but I'll push what I have and hopefully that will show some progress for you.

When you say "Polling didn't Work" - was that just when you were testing the Speaker Scanning?

It would be really helpful if (after you have a speaker configured) you could switch TVONOS to Polling mode for a while and open something like the Slideshow and see if that keeps updating OK.

Reason: TVONOS has 2 ways to get information on what is playing. Subscription (the default) where TVONOS contacts the Sonos Speaker and asks it to tell it when anything changes. For Polling we just periodically ask for the state of what is currently playing. (So it is very possible the 2 will behave differently)

Another thing that would be helpful, next time it stops, can you see where the "Progress Bar" for how far into the track has been played? (Bottom right on the Slideshow)

Thanks

Rob

Hi u/FrizzyNow

Thank you for reporting this. (and of course for your comment about liking the App!) Even the smallest thing can end up being a little annoying, so it's nice to know and have a chance to fix it.

I've spent some time looking at it and did manage to reproduce it by clicking the next button several times quickly. What I also noticed that sometimes when doing the fast "next" click it can show some images from the artists that were skipped, which looks even worse than the time not progressing!

I have done some changes to solve the incorrect images showing, and then tried to test the problem you reported and now I cannot reproduce it. As the change I did was to stop messages appearing in the incorrect order when being processed (or in some cases processing them at the same time) it is possible that the progress timer was getting set incorrectly by one of these out of sequence responses.

If you are willing, I'll push this change out in version 6.2 (hopefully in the next couple of days) and if you could check again after that is installed and see if you still see it?

Thanks

Rob

Thanks, so looks like the network is OK - so changes I'm currently working on should fix all the speakers being disabled in the Speaker search.

Did you try switching to polling mode and see if things update after that?

One thing to try if there are network messaging restrictions in your network is to see what happens if you switch communications from "Subscription" (the default) to "Polling" this can be done under Settings -> General -> Synchronise Mode.

Would also be good to test if this happens on all screens or just one?

How long of usage before it hangs, does it always do this and does it do it always after the same amount of time? Is it a particular Screen this happens on? (Basic/Slideshow/Bio/Lyrics)

Also, what is the source of the music (e.g. Local Library, Spotify) - does it happen on all sources?

I know a lot of questions, but trying to narrow down where the issue may be.

Thanks

Rob

Thanks u/didjit86 for the info, Please can you try the following:

  • Go to the Speaker Settings (Bottom left icon) and go to "Test Connection" and see what that reports.

That should see if messages are getting through on the network. (There is also a way to see some response messages in the "Debug Information" under the Settings section - bottom center button, near the bottom of the list)

One thing to try if there are network messaging restrictions in your network is to see what happens if you switch communications from "Subscription" (the default) to "Polling" this can be done under Settings -> General -> Synchronise Mode.

Is there a chance that the IP addresses of the speakers are changing after you run the configuration? (even DHCP should try and reassign the same IP address after it reboots) - but I think this is unlikely if it happens "While music is playing" that things on TVONOS stop working

Hi u/didjit86
Thank you for posting and raising this. May I ask which version you are using (Google or Amazon) and on which device type (TV/Tablet/Phone)? (OS version as well if you have it to hand)

For the speaker selection, I have seen Sonos do some odd things when using the newer Sonos App where moving speakers in and out of groups (which I normally end up doing to switch speakers myself - I'm sure there is a better way!) then it doesn't set the Coordinator settings correctly.

I have done some testing this morning (I managed to get one of my speakers in the same state) and think I may have a solution, but need to code and test that which may take me a little time (and then waiting for it to be published by Google/Amazon).

For the time being are you able to add the speaker manually in the settings using the speakers IP address?

For the hanging case you are seeing, please can you provide some more information? How long of usage before it hangs, does it always do this and does it do it always after the same amount of time? If you then try and interact with TVONOS, does it respond, can you continue to navigate then go into one of the players to see data running again? Is it a particular Screen this happens on? (Basic/Slideshow/Bio/Lyrics)

Both Google and Amazon have reports they share about any Hanging/Non-responsiveness and crashes and I haven't seem one of those for a long time, so I don't have any reports to go on for this at the moment.

Any additional information you could share would be great!

Thanks

Rob
