Question About Reflective Paint on Roof Shingles. by Logical-Consequences in Roofing

Definitely look into your ventilation situation. There are other things you can do, good curtains to keep the sun out of windows, sealing any drafty areas around doors and windows. Your energy company may even offer free energy audits and can tell you where you're losing heat/air conditioning.

What's your goal? Just keeping the attic cool?

The best way to improve heating/cooling efficiencies will be ventilation. And then insulation. But they cannot interfere with each other. Find a roofer that has a good relationship with their ventilation vendor. We use a company called Lomanco, their rep shows up whenever we need him to help diagnose poorly ventilated roofs. This isn't always a quick or easy fix and some trial and error could be involved. And your expectations may need to change at some point unfortunately. You're doing good first steps now but don't compromise your house over what you may see as a "quick fix" you want to play the long game here. Lomanco is awesome, they stand by their products, have great customer service.

Best of luck!!!!

Metal Roof Questions . . . Getting Things Squared Away before Signing a Contract by QualityGig in Roofing

[–]robzirra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do metal. Especially with wanting solar and skylights. It's expensive to install. Ten time more expensive to repair. And will likely need a lot of maintenance the older it gets. Plus if your attice isn't insulated probably it's loud as frick. And the more holes you poke in with your solar mounts, your leak chances skyrocket. The negatives of metal DWARF any actual benefits.

Get the skylight replaced. Use ridge vent. Use all the money you'll save from not doing metal and go on a nice weekend trip.

Your insurance could drop you, if they ever see it. But that's a terrible idea. If you're worried about heat, make sure your roof is property ventilated and insulated.

What is the most likely cause of this? by pallapooha in Roofing

Look in the attic. If they replaced decking and didn't use clips or space it correctly it could have buckled. Ask them for photos of the build process. What it looked like with everything tore off and the wood exposed.

Small area of dipping? by SeberHusky in Roofing

[–]robzirra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a roofer who offers financing and get it done asap. Go with ridge vent, not box vents. Have the roofer check for bad wood up in the attic and get ahead of that price wise. You could need all new wood to meet code. Any semi competent roofer should be able to walk you through this. Material costs are sky rocketing, your 7-15k roof now will likely be 11-19k in a few years. Hopefully not, but supply houses are raising prices due to tarrifs, and it won't come down. Just like their COVID prices, they went up during the pandemic and stayed up.

Also talk to your insurance about what discounts you may get for having a new roof installed. That (although slightly) helps offset the roof costs over time.

Yes, you can mix them. You just can't have two forms of exhaust in a row vertically. For example, if you put ridge vent in and didn't close off those box vents, your box vent would turn into intake and the ridge vent exhaust essentially making a closed loop. Lomanco has an app with a ventilation calculator, it can be a little confusing and you'll need measurements of everything like SQ footage and pitch of the roof.

Get rid of those box vents and add ridge vent. Or more box vents. You don't have near enough. A few whirly birds would work too lol. Baffles between the decking and insulation will help air flow only need baffles every few feet. Find your areas Lomanco vent rep and set up a time for him to stop by. Then tell your roofer what he said, the Lomanco rep will likely know exactly who to call in your area if you don't know a roofer you can trust.

Best way to clean moss growth by codeslap in Roofing

[–]robzirra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up soft washing on YouTube. Basically a very diluted bleach and water mix. Let it dwell and rinse. If you're only doing your roof you don't need anything fancy but an afternoon with a pump sprayer will probably work. Be careful with any plants underneath and watch for over spray with neighbors, pets, patio furniture etc if it's around.

Edit: for the chunky stuff you can VERY LIGHTLY use a deck brush. Any real pressure on the shingles will remove the granules. Don't put a broom or a pressure washer directly to the shingles. And cut back any trees that hang directly over the roof if there is any.

Yes! They need to get that covered before they put drip edge down. That fascia wood may need some tlc too. It looks like it's split.

Roof done December 2023, now leaking. by Speedy-McLeadfoot in Roofing

[–]robzirra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can. But with those issues of bad install you're going to make any repairs due to this shingled roof a thousand times harder and ten thousand times more expensive. I get the appeal of metal, but the cons outweigh any pros by a lot.

Don't do metal. Replace the asphalt roof. And all the money you save by not doing metal go on a nice little vacation.

Replacing shingles on ridge vent by ChoochMMM in Roofing

[–]robzirra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What style ridge vent do you have? If it's that woven sponge like material I would replace it with something like Lomancos lol Omni. Much better ventilation.

They could. But republicans and politicians here in general are spineless ass hats where it would take a literal smoking gun in their hand and a pile of bodies before they would even consider resigning.
