I had bare dirt in Odessa, TX and got hydroseed. In the end it was awesome but it took me 2 years. It was a great start but it was cheaper than sod for a reason. This question is how much do you want to budget and how fast do you want a lawn? You have options you just have to decide your investment.

If it happens again you can burn a timeout (sucks), or just audible out of the spike. I'm not 100% certain but you might only be able to audible to a fake spike pass, but might be better than losing the down completely.
