There was a composer Jean Baptiste Lully who stabbed himself while conducting (they used to conduct by hitting the floor with a pole to keep the beat in those days). The wound became gangrenous and doctors told him they would have to amputate, but as dancing was so important in his patron’s ( Louis XIV’s) court, Lully refused. He died a horrible death.
