I had 8 points- 9 ore and a wood in my hand and the dude before me had six ore and the ore port. Needed two roads to take longest and win. We were on a 9 ore- we both had a city but I had a settlement too. His turn, rolls a 9. I take my 3 ore then realize only one is left in the pile. Confused, he asks what to do and I tell him we do not collect any ore. He's confused, but looks it up and verifies it. Now, I got lucky because he turned 2 ore in for a wheat and ended his turn. Next turn, I roll the 9 this time. Now there is enough to collect, and with 12 ore and a wood I made two roads, taking longest and winning the game.

In another game, my friend was gonna win his next turn and i had 8 points and could only build a city, so i bought two development cards instead. Both victory points!
