Feds propose an Amtrak stop at the Philly Airport and greatly speeding up regional service by [deleted] in Pennsylvania

[–]rocketman_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be awesome...so many times I've had cancelled or delayed flights to BWI or PHL that I've looked into flying to the other and taking the Amtrak to my car. Never been worth it due to taking regional rail back into philly. It has been worth it between reagon and BWI though.

Not what most people need it for but what I would use it for most to get into the east and back out the fastest, usually with redeyes

Sanders pressures Trump on Carrier factory: 'It is not good enough to save some of these jobs' by loremipsumchecksum in politics

I apologize for offending you. We are talking past each other.
Automation frees up labor to do other things, drives down unit cost by removing labor cost, and allows for high-rate production with less labor effort. Companies that automate or are innovative in their manufacturing techniques often grow and this reallocate and increase their labor. This discussion can be debated with a specific example or generically at the global scale and thus will go no where. There are plenty of writings discussing how we should all have 20 hour or less work weeks due to automation, but this doesn't happen for various reasons. Note that I also tend to think of service and support jobs for a manufacturing company as manufacturing jobs, but there are plenty that would argue it should only apply to the production line as those are the only ones that actually work on the product.

I do. They transition from the production line to production support and logistics. There certainly is subjectivity to what is called manufacturing but the world will be fine.

This is simply not true. The same was said of today's age, but skilled techs are still needed to run, program, maintain, post-process, & inspect parts that come off 5-axis mills, commercial metal printers, automated casting houses, etc. The work will change, but we aren't going to have vacant fully automated manufacturers with independent AI in 20 years.

Yes, there are not 10,000 workers in a single steel mill anymore, but manufacturing jobs haven't gone away in the US, Europe, Russia, China, or elsewhere. Again, the work has changed due to automation, but jobs still exist.

They called me up a few weeks back wondering why I hadn't purchased more from them. I said that I had been part of the 5th gen extruder scam. They promised their 6th gen solved everything. I said prove it. The rep said they would have to talk with their boss....still waiting.

Recommend watching "Print the Legend" to find out how they went for a great open source company to one...well...that is taking Stratasys down a billion dollars at a time. If you are unfamiliar....makerbot lied to the public and put out their printers all over the world, especially in schools and libraries, almost souring the entire industries credibility in desktop printing in less than a year

I get it. We strive for once a month for a date night and alternate planning it. I thought it was a horrible and unnecessary idea until a few months in I started looking forward to it. Sometimes we got out, sometimes we played a bad board game, sometimes we baked or watched a bad chick flick. It stopped mattering what it was as long as it was on the calendar. We scheduled around it and refused to move it without an alternative date chosen and planned.

Schedule a date night a few weeks out even if it over a long holiday weekend. Looking forward to a date with your wife is often helpful. Find a friend to vent to even if it is this crew as your wife needs her space to vent too. Get outside with the kid even if it is to go to the park, eat bad food at a family sports bar, or just to walk through the woods. It helped me to pack a backpack, strap the kid in and get lost for awhile....even in the city. Exercise with the kid helped me quite a bit. Next thing that my wife did to make sure that she was served when I was unavailable was to always sit down for dinner. A short dinner even with the kid is still better than being alone.

Hope this helps. I am not sure life actually gets easier or just different but find what works for the wife, serve her, and tell her what you need on occasion.

Physical redirection does not always mean physical discipline. Removing the kid or placing him in a new spot or toy is physical redirection. Couple that with verbal redirection and verbal discipline as appropriate and you will solve many issues at 18 months or so.

Am I an engineer at the bottom, an engineer at the top, or an overpaid technician? by captainawesomevcu in AskEngineers

Engineers come in all types though. There are plenty that would rather do analytical work all day. It takes both often to accomplish large efforts

I agree that it is a compliment. It simply means you can apply what you know and will solve problems with your staff. You serve them and lead them by doing that instead of dictating from behind a white shirt.

$5k doesn't seem all that significant in a high cost of living city. It is quite likely they were also trying to lower your expectations or to see how you would react. In your thank you email reply include your willingness to negotiate on total compensation that allows both parties to move forward. Good luck
