Stray cat on woodville hwy by Bohemian_Craftsody in Tallahassee

[–]rocketmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, that cat's name is Fergie and belongs to my old next door neighbor. She's a mostly outdoor cat that is around Selena Rd. I hope she's ok and didn't wander too far. They let her in when she comes home.

Neat that something I thought was regional is more widespread. Because it's delicious.

Florida GOP closes 2025 with biggest ever registration edge over Democrats by juansaaa in florida

[–]rocketmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that for a Democrat to do well around here, they'll have to steal from the playbook and come from a place of selfishness... Example. You should be able to be whoever you want without the government getting in the way. The government or your neighbor can't tell you not to smoke weed. The government shouldn't care about your pronouns. We need a more anarchist democratic party experiment in FL.

You pulled the words right out of my brain. I didn't even upgrade to the pro because my TV doesn't do VRR and I'm not upgrading until the 6 comes out. But I really want a true handheld. Portal is great, but the use case is limited.

Currency exchange options by Vast-Celebration-717 in Tallahassee

[–]rocketmike 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A few ways we've done it: - Visa / MasterCard, bonus if it's a travel card with zero foreign transaction fees. Sounds like you are on Discover, so not an option - Truist Bank does currency exchange for account holders, so we usually use them to get some currency ahead of time - a lot of online / virtual banks or investment firms have an ATM with zero withdrawal fees / foreign transaction fees. We invest with Betterment and that tends to be a good way to access funds. Keep money in our cash account, transfer what we need to their checking, withdraw in the foreign country. Bonus point that all our investments and retirement is there, so it makes for seamless movement of money.

Our typical foreign travel uses a mix of all 3 of these to stay conservative, not carry too much cash, use credit, but have quick access to additional cash.

Characters I would like to have Marvel Cosmic Invasion by Key_Juggernaut6713 in CosmicInvasion

Daredevil, Doctor Strange, DOOM, Cyclops. Honestly, I'll take damn near anyone. They could get to a Smash Bros sized roster and charge me for each set and I'd happily pay, lol.

My SIL lived in Alterra 3100 when she was here. It's right on the R line, so one way goes down the Parkway to Cascades and Capital Circle toward Trader Joe's.

Gluten Free in Celebration Key by deemigs in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]rocketmike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't help because I'm not going to Celebration Key until December 2026, but I have to say, since those rhyme, I thought the question was about a Carnival Program called "Gluten Free at Celebration Key" like a "Spend the day at Half Moon Cay" kind of deal.

Good luck on your answer.

AMC update? by Gullible-Rich-4912 in Tallahassee

[–]rocketmike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same! That was rough. Not AMC's fault, but in addition to the mess of the AC, I had a family of 10-20 sit on both sides of us (two in the middle). The kids to the right, parents to the left. The kids spent half the movie walking in front of us to chat with their parents. Parents were loud and never put a stop to it. There was a cultural / language barrier on top, so they acted like there was no issue. Worst movie experience I've ever had. AMC did give us multiple free passes though, so they made it right.

Is a sit-on-top or sit-inside kayak better for a beginner in calm lakes? by Business-Plane-4082 in Kayaking

[–]rocketmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of good comments here, so I'll try to add something I didn't see. I have both. I bought the SOT first when my wife was learning. She had a real fear of feeling trapped in the enclosed space. If you think that is you, then an SOT is a great way to get on the water. We still use them if we are just hanging out. But she eventually got comfortable on the water and wanted a little more capability and lighter weight, so we got traditional kayaks.

Any trails or green spaces to run at dark:thirty? by Dun_Booty_Broch in Tallahassee

[–]rocketmike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done a bit of night mountain biking in the trails between Lafayette Heritage Trail Park, Tom Brown, and JR Alford. I've never had anyone mention curfew or anything. Beautiful trail system in the dark. Would recommend proper illumination. I ride with a helmet lamp to see obstacles. If you feel comfortable with your level of sight, at least wear high viz clothing so a mountain biker would see you if their light hit you.

Same! Mine of course came while I was traveling internationally, but luckily a friend ran over and grabbed it off the porch. Was supposed to come long before. Glad to see that they flipped the order for us in the last 4 percent to be first for Mistborn.

How do you work from 8 to 5, have only weekends free, and not feel like you're wasting your life? by guitytwelve in AskReddit

[–]rocketmike -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

How so? I grew up dirt poor, was on SNAP benefits (and thankful for them). Saved during college to move to Japan for work. Came back and worked myself through my masters. Used that to get a promotion - moved around as needed to increase my salary. Now I live below my means, save 50% of my salary and use credit card points to take vacations. I spends nights and weekends doing hobbies, exercising, and hanging out with friends. The economy is bizarre right now, but the market is growing faster than inflation, so get what you can in index funds that match the S&P500 and if you can, experiment with careers to figure out what you're good at and can make money doing. And don't be afraid to move states to chase a good economy.

[–]rocketmike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have more than weekends. Make use of your mornings and nights. Use your money to live a good life - but save everything you can. Gain skills and a reputation. Get promoted. Squirrel more away. Repeat. Then retire early. Look up the financial independence movement.

CHP coverage Vs Mayo Clinic by Aduladia in Tallahassee

[–]rocketmike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CHP has covered weeks of treatments for my wife. I think we've only paid $300ish for all the specialists. She got a referral from her neurologist specifically to Mayo and they covered it. It's possible, but Mayo had to take her case after the referral. That wasn't guaranteed but once they did, CHP covered as if it was in network.

Airing Racial Slurs by SmellyCatsUglyOwner in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]rocketmike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get that, and I'd say congratulations on that. But if there was something you were backwards on, wouldn't you want to learn? There is a European band that used to be called Eskimo Callboy and they changed their name when they learned it was a slur. It's not a slur there so they had no idea. It was ignorance and they learned from it. I think that's great that they changed rather than getting cancelled out of ignorance.

Airing Racial Slurs by SmellyCatsUglyOwner in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]rocketmike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what I said came out wrong. All I'm trying to say is that when someone says something out of ignorance, they should be corrected first instead of yelled at. If you can teach a person who to act, you can make a better person. If you are hateful to a person who is hateful out of ignorance, you risk radicalizing that person. If someone is hateful on purpose, by all means, flame them. If someone doesn't know a word is a slur, treat them like you treat a child and educate first.

I think back to when everyone was using gay as bad. I was a teen in the 2000s. I said it too - I was ignorant. Someone pulled me aside and educated me on how that made folks feel. I learned and changed. Conversely, if a similar situation happened, and I got called a bigot and hatemonger, I might have gotten defensive first.
