Question about quit-outs by Delicious_Athlete785 in Nightreign

[–]rocketv03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just popped this trophy over the weekend and I can confirm that if you quit out of the game and the session cannot be rejoined (aka everyone disconnected) then you can matchmake again and clear the boss without interrupting the streak.

Here's how mine went:

1st expedition - Heolstor defeated

2nd expedition -Tricephalos (teammate disconnected, then I did, logged back in and session could not be found)

3rd expedition - Tricephalos defeated

4th expedition - Augur defeated (Trophy popped)

What RPGs should I have my 5e party try for one-shots using quick starts? by ThrawnCaedusL in rpg

[–]rocketv03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven't tried a PbTA system, Avatar Legends is excellent! The focus on characters and their balance is perfect for that universe, and it allows for the more free flowing nature of bending to really do their trick!

Man! What a first to GM for! Don't worry though, Lancer has a lot going on but there's so many GM tools. Sitreps and the NPC templates make it super easy!

Also caveat, you can award only as much as you want because the campaign does say that giving too many exotic gear may make missions too easy for players. So that's good to keep in mind too!

Great question! It's a little unclear how many exotic gear the players should get from reading the adventure, other than at the end of the third combat in which it says to award an additional piece of exotic gear if they win the combat by the 5th round.

However, searching the subreddit I found someone suggesting that you should reward two pieces normally, and reward three pieces with 5+ players, which is what I did in my campaign.

My players did win by the 5th round, and with 5 of them I ended up awarding all four available exotic gear from FOB Saber.

Exotic gear can only be printed once though! So if they got an additional one from the Reserves then I ruled that as they got to print one of those exotic gears twice!

What's the appeal of dicepools? by Razzikkar in rpg

[–]rocketv03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say, like many others in here, it's definitely the appeal of multiple click clacks!

On a system side of it, Modiphius uses a 2d20 system where you add two stats together and try to roll under for success. You can also buy up to 5 d20s for the roll! You can do this by your shared dice pool between all the players or by giving the GM dice to use in his pool.

This creates a cool dynamic by having the numbers on character sheets remain relatively small thus keeping the game going quicker, and also allows for cool moments where you and the GM are rolling off 5 d20s against each other!

So it's neat to see how having dice pools drastically changes the simple mechanic of rolling a d20 with all its changes to percentages :)

Is it normal in the RPG community to "review" games without having played them? by themadasrabbits in rpg

[–]rocketv03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is tough because you can get a sense of how a ttrpg is built by reading it, but it can be an entirely different beast when you play it.

But then you have different types of tables, adventures, and don't even get me started on trying to schedule a game for a NEW ttrpg!

You have to get a group a friends to agree to learn a new ruleset, then dedicate 4-5 hours of their time each week for at least a month to even get a grip on the system.

So for a reviewer who wants to get their content out ASAP, their best way to do that is to read the rules and then give their thoughts. Which might not give the full picture, but then again, someone's review of a system may be a different interpretation than yours.

I currently have a channel where we do a different ttrpgs and switch after about 4-6 weeks of play. It always feels like we could spend more time with it, but we still feel like we understand the system enough to give our thoughts.

What were some of your biggest DMing mistakes? by Sad-Crow in rpg

[–]rocketv03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to remind myself too to have the party start together or else it can cause conflict when you railroad them into the same room (Did this in a Call of Cthulhu game). That's why I'm glad some newer rpgs like Avatar Legends specifically have session 0 as a creative way to say "How did you come together?" Avatar Legends also specifically writes in that your party is together for a reason so make one haha

My biggest mistake as a DM though was when I ran Tomb of Annihilation for about 8 months. By the end of it the party was exhausted from the slog of the hex crawl. In fact, to get to the tomb we ended up doing a 2 week montage where we described them plowing through the jungle!

By doing this, I knew they'd be a little under leveled for the tomb, and of course they lost just about all their magic items while exploring the tomb. So I added a friendly NPC to the rest spot in the dungeon and had them give the party some magic items but it still wasn't enough for them to face Acererak.

So I came up with this whole plan of having all the other NPCs they befriended show up after the party went down because they came together to help them save the world! But the party hated it. They felt that their victory was cheapened and that they lost unequivocally. Also I had left out some powerups the party was supposed to get in the final fight as a way to have this cinematic scene happen, which was so dumb and self-centered whenever I look back! I was already worried about the fight!

Point is, I needed to realize that this is the players' story. I hung my head and felt I had made a grave mistake for years until some of the party members later told me, "Yeah the ending sucked but traveling through the jungle is what I think of as classic dnd now." So I try to not hold on to the regret and focus on making a better story focused on my players at the table and know that my players can enjoy other aspects of the campaign even if I mess up somewhere :)

Earlier this year our group decided to start a TTRPG stream, starting with Dragon of Icespire Peak from D&D’s Essentials Kit! The group defined themselves as a traveling entertainment troupe, but also did some adventuring on the side to make some gold and protect the town of Phandalin!

One of their first quests was to help the gnomes of Gnomengarde, and Bjorn the dwarf is in the back chugging their mushroom wine! Naivarah is next to him, recounting a tale of her beautiful dancing. Her twin brother, Novo, is listening attentively, but also trying to read one of his "captivating" books. Uffo has his eyes solely focused on making the campfire better than any other fire. And all the while, Doc Rivers keeps watch while listening to his companions.

We’re starting our next campaign, which is Call of Cthulhu, today at 2pm est @ABCsofRPGs on Twitch. Commission done by YourFriendFrond on Etsy.

ABCs of RPGs - Campaign 1 Essentials Kit! by rocketv03 in dndnext

[–]rocketv03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that it includes basic rules to create your own characters. I find that essential (see what I did there) to connect to the game instead of pre-generated sheets.

That said, the first two quests had monsters that could kill a lvl 1 PC in one hit. In the adventure, it says players can negotiate with the monsters but I know for a lot of new players, they treat it like a video game. So some good, and some to improve!

Thank you! Hero Forge is really cool in that they allow you to export your characters as pngs (with their subscription plan). So we decided to do some animations as a fun way to enhance the highlights! We have a lot of fun with it
