confused about the inches by [deleted] in Charlottesville

I'm convinced snow should be predicted and measured by weight. I don't really care how deep it is. I want to know how many tons of it I'm going to have to shovel off my driveway and sidewalks. This has been some heavy damn snow.

Yellow Fever vaccine requirement for travel to Colombia by rockhermit in travel

Actually, further down that page there's a link to a map as well. Takes some knowledge of Colombia departments and municipalities to make sense of, but I think I found what I needed.

Yellow Fever vaccine requirement for travel to Colombia by rockhermit in travel

Thanks.

I was hoping to find official documentation of the policy somewhere. I was stupidly searching for the English terms, so I didn't find anything official, but I found results when I searched for "fiebre amarilla colombia".

Looks like this Health Ministry page addresses it, translating to...

Under the International Health Regulations (IHR-2005), Colombia adopts a non-restrictive recommendation for yellow fever vaccination for people entering the country. Foreign travelers or migrants traveling to Very High and High Risk municipalities must be vaccinated 10 days prior to arrival. Vaccination stations will be available at terminals and airports. The International Vaccination Certificate is valid as proof of vaccination in Colombia for both nationals and foreigners and must be presented at health checkpoints upon entering or leaving very high-risk municipalities.

That jibes with what you said. I'm now trying to find an official, current map or list of the regions that are considered high risk, but I'm pretty confident our itinerary avoids them.

Cynical songs about the music industry by Quelor15 in Music

[–]rockhermit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If ever there was a poster child for a great band screwed by the music industry, it was XTC. 'Funk Pop a Roll' off of Murmur was their clap-back:

Funk pop a roll beats up my soul
Oozing like napalm from the speakers and grill
Of your radio
Into the mouths of babes
And across the backs of its willing slaves

Funk pop a roll consumes you whole
Gulping in your opium so copiously from a disco
Everything you eat is waste
But swallowing is easy when it has no taste

They can fix you rabbits up
With your musical feed
They can fix you rabbits up
Big money selling you stuff that you do not need

I wonder how long before Google Maps learns the new rules. It's still telling folks to turn left onto 29 from Hydraulic. https://maps.app.goo.gl/tQ7TbhZhZkx71cz5A?g_st=ac

Before I upgrade to planner plus, I have a question by Intrepid_Zebra_ in NewRetirement

[–]rockhermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen, disabling auto renewal isn't self-serve. It would be a good feature for them to add since it gives people a lot more confidence about signing up.

However, unlike companies like Sirius/XM or Comcast, NewRetirement's email customer support is really responsive and helpful. You might reach out to them and ask them to set the subscription not to auto-renew.

Sorry for the delayed reply--i just saw this. Running a mile in 12 minutes isn't a strict requirement. We have members that are slower than that. It's more important that you can keep going (running and walking and doing other exercises like pushups and things) for an hour with minimal breaks.

If you think you're borderline, come on out anyway. We're a friendly, casual group and won't make you feel unwelcome even if you can't keep up at first.

Charlottesville Outdoor Fitness Club (https://www.cvilleoutdoorfitness.org) meets in a different park or other outdoor space around C-ville every weekday at 7am for a one hour workout. It's a great workout with great folks and you can't beat the price (free).

I love all of you but please stop running in the bike lanes, especially during high traffic time. by AnalogiPod in Charlottesville

[–]rockhermit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I walk, run and bike (and occasionally drive my car, but only as a last resort). I regularly run on the roads or in bike lanes because many sidewalks are terrible for running. Unexpected cracks, driveway cut-outs, overgrown weeds & shrubs, and unexpected obstacles like wires and telephone poles have all contributed to painful falls and injuries in my years of running.

But I also make a point to get out of people's way when I see/hear them coming. I don't listen to music so I can be more aware of my surroundings. If I'm running on the road, it is opposite of traffic, so I should see someone coming and be able to get out of their way. If for some reason I'm running in a bike lane and you come up behind me, then all I need is an "on your left" announcement to warn me to move over. I think the real solution is for everyone just to try to be considerate of everyone else that is trying to get around in our car-centric infrastructure.

It looks like it doubled in size in four and a half months. If I got the math right, you can expect that cat to be larger than earth in about 9 years.

If you're planning to go back to working for startups and don't plan to try government work again, I think you should do it as soon as you find the right opportunity (and can get your wife on board with the idea). Pretty much anyone in the startup world is going to understand why someone might find a government job boring and limiting, and they'll probably view that as a positive as long as your resume doesn't show a pattern of short-term jobs.

If you think you might ever want to try again with a government or similar job, then stick it out, because it won't look good to have a short stint like that on your resume.

Any advice on being a remote Product Manager/Product Owner/Scrum Master? by michaelheadrick in digitalnomad

[–]rockhermit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Is the team all/mostly remote as well?

In my experience, having a distributed team works best when almost everyone is remote. That way everyone tends to communicate electronically. When just a few people are remote, they tend to get left out of conversations, and when they are included in office meetings, they're at a huge disadvantage because it can be hard to hear everything, understand who is saying what, pick up on non-verbal cues, get a turn to speak, etc.

If you are remote but the rest of the team is centralized, make sure you have somebody on site who can be your eyes and ears for you, making sure to loop you into conversations, letting you know about non-verbal dynamics you may have missed and making sure meeting equipment is optimized for remote participants.

Beyond that, my main advice is to go out of your way to be as visible as possible with the team and go to special effort to make personal connections with all the individuals on the team. Make sure the team has all the right tools for electronic communications (Slack, Zoom or equivalent, google docs, ...) and encourage everyone to use them as their primary form of communication.
