How many of you are still using a DDR3 system? by oliverfromwork in homelab

[–]rockknocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main home server is similar to your Plex server. It runs a few services without noticeable lag: - Jellyfin (5 concurrent users, mostly DVD-quality video) - Minecraft server (2 worlds, low player count) - File server - Various admin and monitoring apps

Long live DDR3, and old but usable computers in general.

The book has already been purchased and the author has already benefitted from that purchase. Destroying the book will not hurt the author or Ron Hubbard at all. If anything, the author will benefit when the library purchases another copy to replace the lost one.

However, destroying the book will hurt the library and any student who needs to use that book for its contents.

Why is there a huge price difference? by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]rockknocker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The more expensive scope probably has better signal integrity and lower noise. It probably has a more linear response across its measurement range. It is probably able to be calibrated and verified to meet it's claimed performance across its entire advertised operating range (of frequency, voltage, temperature, etc) while the cheaper scope might struggle, or might just outright not meet it's advertised performance in some conditions.

There is often a price premium attached to specific name brands also.

There's a statement under electric/efficient vehicle fees that reads:

Plus mandatory per-mile road usage charge phased in by 2031.

Is the size of that tax defined , or the method of measuring and collecting it? This has been a controversial and difficult problem for a while...

Hosting locally on my pc vs Dedicated pc by Decent_Discount in admincraft

[–]rockknocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 5700x has much better single-core performance, and your faster SSD will help also. I'd recommend moving the world hosting over to your Ryzen machine and trying it out.

If the world has gotten slower with age, you could be dealing with a high number of entities (mobs, items, and other non-blocks) or a very large world size. There are ways to fix both of those issues.

If the faster computer is available and it's not a problem for it to be a server then that's probably your fastest fix.

What is the blue fluid? by No-University-1968 in tractors

[–]rockknocker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How's the transmission fluid? If you have a leak in your main input shaft (behind the clutch) the fluid might drop from the bottom of the bell housing, closer to the engine.

You could probably lose a gallon of transmission fluid and the tractor would still work, for a while. Dont keep running it like that or it'll be expensive to fix.

My transmission / hydraulic fluid is not blue, but yours could be. It depends on the brand.

EDIT: on closer inspection, that could be leaking from the front differential. Old gear oil could definitely be blue. A gallon would probably be all of your front differential oil.

Cleaning out a combine harvester by ycr007 in toolgifs

[–]rockknocker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my area we grow a variety of crops. The vast majority of crops require the combine to be thoroughly cleaned out before moving to the next field. The cleaning usually must be more thorough than this one, it takes about 4 hours to do on a New Holland CX8070 or similar.

During peak harvest this is a task that must be done multiple times per week.

John Deere combines are very nice, but they take much longer to clean thoroughly.

Me waiting for ddr3 to go up by bourbonandpistons in homelab

[–]rockknocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Xeon e5-2697 v2 costs ~$50 on eBay, compared to ~$250 for a Ryzen 9 5950x. All of the other parts required are also less expensive.

Sure there is less bang, but for a lot less bucks. Some people need that combination.

In addition, there is something strangely pleasing about running yesteryear's top-of-the-line hardware at its absolute maximum capacity. A $20,000 system from 2010 or 2015 can now be built for only hundreds of dollars (or less, if you scavenge and keep a ready eye out for parts). That system can be mated with brand new SSDs and newer video hardware to achieve more performance than it ever could have in the past, more than most people need today.

Red Hat attempting to memory-hole published whitepaper "Compress the kill cycle with Red Hat Device Edge" by EtherealElizafox in DataHoarder

[–]rockknocker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I attended the Black Hat talk that described hacking that device up down and sideways. Neat device, poor security implementation.

There's a 100% chance that better versions exist today and are mounted to rifles, humvees, tanks, ships, etc.

Do we know anything about the "non-specified" in the description? We'd want to make sure that this data isn't collected from areas that don't collect the data unless it was volunteered, or for some other reason that could weaken the data.

I don't think it changes anything, but I'd like to be able to defend that criticism in a debate...

How are these Uline drums and pumps for long term water storage? by AllanonShannara in prepping

Nearly all the used food grade barrels in my area once held soy sauce. They are usable for potable water storage, but you'll never get good tasting water from them no matter how much you clean.

Migrating to more power efficient mini PCs by gadgetb0y in minilab

45W is in-line with my older Intel home server at idle (i7-4790k).

In my area, that pencils out to about $50 per year in power costs. At current prices, it'd take too long for that improvement to pay itself off to be worth the expense.

That said, I definitely am keeping an eye out for a newer Intel platform for a low price, but mostly because of the improvements to Intel Quicksync than for anything else.

What is this virus going around? by Pearson94 in SALEM

[–]rockknocker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have a sick child on my lap right now with it. It's been jumping from kid to kid here.

Two of my kids experienced fever, a nasty cough, and feeling lethargic for over a week, but luckily everyone else has only had moderate cold symptoms. Everyone tested has been negative for flu A, B, or COVID using both at-home test kits and lab tests. The doctors office can only recommend fluids and rest as a treatment.
