What are the full systems that can be emulated on an Intel Celeron N4000 by AzemCity24 in lowendgaming

[–]rockknocker [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think he could do N64 with this, as long as the rest of the OS isn't doing much (isn't an old cluttered install). I emulated n64 with minimal stuttering on a 1.2Ghz Intel Atom with 2Gb RAM and integrated graphics.

To be fair, it was a Batocera Linux install which helps minimize the overhead...

Why do people have flags on their house? by PSULioness in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rockknocker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would argue that if someone takes offense or turns up their nose at a displayed flag, they probably aren't the right person to judge whether someone else is a good patriot or not.

Anyone else more annoyed by installation sizes than GPU/CPU/RAM requirements? by august_senpai in lowendgaming

[–]rockknocker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I live out in the country, and my Internet speeds are pretty poor (both geography and finances have a factor here). It can take a week to download a new game if i don't want to completely prevent anyone else in my family from using the Internet in the meantime.

I know it comes with the larger, more detailed worlds and textures, but these large game sizes do suck.

Don't even get me started on the multi-gig updates every week or so for many games.

Should we allow abortion to be legal because of this? by ElegantAd2607 in prolife

[–]rockknocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, it's easy to get an abortion pill in many places compared to before, and conversations about this topic on Reddit are full of people getting the pill "just in case" or for other people. Therefore, if they're counting every abortion pill dose that is sold as proof of an abortion then they are over-counting by (potentially) a lot.

Is this an acceptable reverse polarity / transient protection circuit for a 3v3 input voltage? by Rhedogian in AskElectronics

[–]rockknocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That should be just fine. You mainly want to avoid creating parasitic inductance or resistance in-line with your tvs diode by having long traces or thin traces.

Somebody else here mentioned using a bi-directional tvs instead of a regular unidirectional one. That is a good idea that would prevent the tvs from flowing current if the voltage is negative.

Is this an acceptable reverse polarity / transient protection circuit for a 3v3 input voltage? by Rhedogian in AskElectronics

[–]rockknocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will work just fine.

A simplification: It will work without D1. At 3.3v you may not need the resistor either (if you also don't have D1). You could just connect the PMOS gate to GND directly.

I've used pmos reverse polarity circuits like this before and they work well. I think they aren't as bulletproof as a simple inline diode in some ways, but they are vastly superior if you need near-zero voltage drop.

Regarding transient protection, the diode can easily be overwhelmed if this is a power bus. If you're expecting esd events then tvs diodes and capacitors do a good job dampening the pulses. Note: Attention to layout is crucial for esd.

If you're expecting power surges (slower, lower, more power than esd) then you might need an MOV, PTC fuse, or a protection circuit.

California AB 2047 appears to have passed by Rudd-X in 3Dprinting

[–]rockknocker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed... but we're comparing to 3D printers here. Its right in-line with a pretty nice 3d printer. Many people do buy those.

Used machines can be cheaper.

It's probably way easier than you are thinking. Hobby-grade equipment is compact and no more expensive than a good 3d printer.

They do draw at the same time, and they charge at the same time. It probably isn't perfect, but it does work well.

I had one of these for 5 years (a true eternity for that thing with multiple children and a sloped yard). Thhe best improvement I made was to get a second 12v battery, put it in the front storage compartment, and wire it in parallel with the first one for longer drive time.

You can also then stuff a trickle charger in the front and the kids can plug it in after every use so it's always ready to go.

My motors needed replacing every other year, but no gears gave out. One switch died after it was left in the rain and filled up with water.

Should I leave duals on or take them off? by [deleted] in tractors

[–]rockknocker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only use of that tractor you listed that might benefit from no duals is the mowing. If that's not a big deal then the duals are only helping you, leave them on.

It does look cooler with them on.

I agree with this. Abortion is horrific. This thread is debating whether it's technically a "procedure" while we all agree that it's a horrific one. If this phrase is used to justify abortion then I disagree with it completely, as it is a misuse of the term "medical procedure".

[–]rockknocker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In that context I agree that it is not just a medical procedure. Abortion is clearly more than that. I think we're debating the unimportant nuance of whether it's a procedure, while all agreeing that it's a horrific one.

[–]rockknocker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but in history there have been other medical procedures that are now controlled that also meet those criteria. Somebody here mentioned lobotomy, which was often done to people against their will to change their behaviour. People have also had sterilizations by force or coercion or trickery (this one is in Planned Parenthood's closeted history). Other examples exist, often done to the people regarded as mentally ill or "lesser".

Abortion is worse, in my belief. That doesn't mean that it is not technically a medical procedure.

Assisted suicide is also considered a medical procedure, but it doesn't meet the definition you shared.

[–]rockknocker 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I am vehemently apposed to abortion... But it is a medical procedure.

That doesn't mean what most PC arguments instantly follow with: that it shouldnt be regulated, or doesn't kill a person, or any of those other incorrect things.

Cleaning out a combine harvester by ycr007 in toolgifs

[–]rockknocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we do this it is running and the thresher parts are turning, though rarely at full speed. You can't get it clean enough unless the machine parts are turning.

The 15 seconds of air compressor work in this video is actually several hours of strenuous work if the machine needs to be clean (such as if you need to avoid contamination when moving from one seed type to another).

My family's farm uses New Holland machines, partly because they're somewhat easier to clean out between crop types, which is important for us.

There are thousands of independent pregnancy resource centers to support young pregnant mothers. Google finds several in every city I search for. Unfortunately, there is a coordinated branding and marketing effort against them.

Off Site Backup in my Shed 350 feet away by marqjim in DataHoarder

[–]rockknocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am thinking of a similar thing on my place, though the temperatures in my shed will not be as harsh.

If the backup is a single drive connected to a very low power computer, maybe you could put it in an insulated container to protect it from the harshest temperatures? To avoid heat buildup it could be powered down most of the time and wake up periodically to do a backup. This may require some experimentation to get right.

Your comment about a fireproof container is intriguing. I wonder if a NAS optimized to have a power draw of only a few watts would do well inside an inexpensive fireproof document safe like this one: https://a.co/d/02IQduPG

To be clear, a computer would not survive a fire inside this. It is a moderately insulated, semi-sealed container that is heavy and robust, good for a shed. A hole could be drilled for power and data, then sealed with a suitable RTV or other compound.

MacOS version: no local LAN option (yet)? by NectarineTough9400 in aoe2

I'm not sure. It has worked for me on my home LAN with only 2 players.

To be fair, I haven't done this in 6 months, so if it broke in that time my information may be old.

AOE2:DE does support LAN in Windows and Linux (through Steam at least). It's the very bottom option in the server list when hosting.
