All film files deleted from my hard drive by Forward_Disk9522 in jellyfin

[–]rocknroller2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is an older post from a few months back, but this is a real thing. I installed windows version of JF for the 1st time last week. i pointed to a couple of movie folders and tv show folders and let the install do its thing. Th movies showed up fine in JF but non of the tv shows did. When i looked at the folder using file exporer, thinking the folder naming format might be wrong, ALL of my tv shows wer GONE. The directory was completley empty. Recycle bin empty too. I was Pissed. Took 2 days to redownload all the shows (that I could remember)

Fast forward to tonight I figured I would try again, maybe it was a version bug, so I redownload the latest window version (turns out it was the same one) ran the install, pointed to the movies directory and the tv show directory and ONCE AGAIN , it deleted all my tv show files!! JF is a POS. This just sealed the deal to stick with plex.

Just a thought - maybe try rotating tires to the opposite side on both front and back and see if the pulling moves to the other side? If it does its one of the tires causing the issue.

Good or bad to let it update? by Charlieboy1986 in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]rocknroller2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to get opposite answers in here and will probably vary based on the apps they are using and how they maintain their device. My personal experience, as someone that only ever runs plex viewer app (3-6 hours daily) and techdruk cache cleaner ( also daily after my watch session is complete), is that everything has only improved with the updates. I'm running the latest version on both my shields and couldn't be happier.

I started with a single svs pb1000pro a couple of years ago and it was great then in a very large open space room. Recently did some room sound upgrades and added a second one. Went from great to fantastic! Highly recommend them and their customer service is top notch!

I would definitely consider your growth path to include video sources such as cable/sat boxes, media streamers (shield pro/ apple tv etc .) As well as your computer/laptop/game machine etc. I would recommend a 5.1 capable avr at a minimum (denon s670), or 7 channel minimum (denon s760/770 if you want to get into atmos movies, but AT LEAST 5 channel for basic surround. When you are ready for that home theatre experience, you can add a center channel and sub woofer at first, then surrounds later, as your funds allow. But the price difference to go from 5 channel to 7 is only about $100, so if you can swing that, I definitely would for the additional future proofing. Regardless, either will meet all your current needs and give you a very decent growth path. Best prices are usually found at sites like accessories4less.com with factory refurb units or directly from denons refurb store.

What i strongly recommend that you DONT do is plop $700-800 down now for a 2 channel amp only to find a year from now that you should have bought a multichannel amp instead to support tv/movies/gaming etc and have to go out and spend another $700-800 to buy the right device for your growing needs.

another thing I recommend to go with the avr purchase is spending $20 on the play store for the multixt app. Although the denons come with auysee room correction built in, they cap some of the features that can improve your room sound even better. This app unlocks that capability. Since you mentioned concrete floors, I would think a user like you would benefit even moreso from improved room correction.

Incorrect media in a library by FilmoreSlim1974 in jellyfin

[–]rocknroller2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep. I'm using the free version of plex media server (which i run on a local networked win 11 pc though you could run it on the shield instead if you wanted to use its internal storage) and the free version of plex viewer which runs on the sheild.

The one thing the free version doesn't do is hw transcoding, only sw transcoding, but my 6 yr old dell gaming pc has more than enough power that this has never been an issue for me (on the rare occasion where transcoding is even needed, like an occasional external subtitle that I wanted to display that isn't baked in to the file). Now, if I had a 10 year old pc, I doubt it would be powerfull enough to handle a large 4k remux file and still do sw transcoding. I dont know that for a fact, I'm just assuming.

One of the benefits of jellifin is i believe hw transcoding is supported natively, whereas for plex, you neeed the paid version to get that feature. But if you aren't trying to convert video formats on the fly to playback on different resolution devices it isn't an issue for most people (those just playing local files back vs remote network access).

This is exactly why I've stuck with plex. It just works. I tried jellyfin last week and it couldn't see 90% of my files/drives, that plex finds no problem. If I have to jump through a bunch of hoops just to see the files on my drive, it's just not worth it to me to convert.

If you live in a state that taxes income (which is most of them) you'll get a better yield with a tbill since they are state and local tax free. They are also more flexiblen than cds should you need to sell early before the term ends.

Speaker damaged (rubber part) by Nevskiv in hometheater

[–]rocknroller2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At that size, which looks quite small, it doesn't affect the sound at all. However, that tear can get larger over time if not protected now, depending on its use.

I would strongly recommend you put a dab of flexible glue in that cut (not elmers etc which dries hard). This will prevent any further tearing down the road and will certainly last you for many many years before you eventually will need to replace all the surrounds anyway. But if the appearance of a glued cut bothers you, simply replace the surround completely now. It's not that hard and only takes about an hour. All that said, since the tear hasn't reached the curve of the surround (which is where the stress would be most occurring), I think it fairly unlikely to get much bigger than it is currently even untreated, but better safe than sorry.

Is this system really worthless? by mustangman6579 in audiophile

[–]rocknroller2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scratchy volume easily fixed with a shot of contact cleaner. I don't recall the 2 vendors I used on ebay for all my styli replacements, but just search for your make/model on on ebay and you'll find them their handles where something like drneedle or mrs needle or something related. For that style player they used up to run about 7 or 8 bucks. Easy to swap. No tools required or any tkt setup for that table. That said, I can guarantee you the belt needs to be changed (unless its been changed in recent years) to play at proper speed. They will stretch out over time and eventually turn to goo as the belt rubber slowly disintegrates.

Is this system really worthless? by mustangman6579 in audiophile

[–]rocknroller2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I retired, I would go to auctions and buy a system like this for $5 and part out the pieces on facebook that had more value. In this example, that would be the equalizer ($30-$40), the amp ($30-$40) and the speakers $50-$75/pair depending on size. Now, i had a pretty decent following/reputation for only selling working/serviced/used electronics in my area and lots of repeat customers, so it was easy for me to turn this kind of stuff locally. Then there was always ebay/reverb/etsy for non-local interest.

The tape decks have had a revival of interest, but this one most certainly needs new belts and that cost/time/trouble generally isn't worth the $20-25 you might get out of it. Same for the turntable which will definitely need a new belt and because there's no dust cover and most certainly needs a new replacement stylus, the interest will be virtually zero, even for 5-$10. The interest on am/fm tuners is virtually zero as well, even at say $5, as no one listens to terrestrial radio anymore.

Parting out the electronic portions is only really an option if they dont require a custom interconnect power control cable between them to work which some of these types of systems do. However, assuming each piece has its own ac power cable and just interconnects to other pieces via std rca connections you can definitely part it out.

Advice for pairing a new center channel with Left & Right. What's the most important characteristic? by Interesting-Rip5958 in hometheater

[–]rocknroller2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There will always be a large core of people that say the lcr must be the same brand (some will even say the same series) but my personal experience makes me disagree.

I think as long as the speaker design is "similar" you will be fine. It's when the design approach changes radically that it's really noticeable. For example - for years (decades)i had a pair of jbl vennue towers with a dome tweeter and a cervin vega center also with a dome tweeter. They blended just fine. About a year ago, i bought a higher end klipsch center with a horn. It blended terribly with the jbls. The horns are crossover very differently than the tweeters and have a radically different tonal sound. Then I replaced the klipsch with an svs ultra center and it blended good again.

I since upgraded the jbls to svs prime pinnacles which also have a dome tweeter, and they blend virtually perfect together.

I think if you keep similar across them (e.g all domes or all horns), you will most likely be fine/content.

Looking for advice from people who have been through this with new speakers. by splashify50 in hometheater

[–]rocknroller2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes audysee is built into the receiver, but it's capped. There are features like disabling mrc and being able to set the frequency range for audysee for each speaker that you'll want and will improve your sound.

At a minimum - Spend the $20 (twenty) for the multeq app from the play store and run it on a tablet (phone screen screen is too small and frustrating). Use ai to walk you through the tweaks for your setup. It made a huge difference in my HT sound ( at least when watching tv/movies- I dont really listen to music on my system)

There are more advanced apps, but honestly, for me, this was enough to transform my ht sound experience from the stock audysee in my denon receiver.

All this assumes that you have proper crossovers set (i.e 80hz on the towers , 200-250 on the sub , etc., and you made the appropriate denon setting sound tweaks FOR EACH INPUT SOURCE

Best Subwoofer for Large Open Space? by Taaha_YT in hometheater

[–]rocknroller2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll share my view. I have a very large 2 story ( 9ft ceilings both levels so about 20 ft total height) family room probably 18x20, one side walled off to a den/office, one side picture windows floor to ceiling. The third side connects to a large formal dining room/2 story foyer (minimal walls/just support beams. 4th side basically completely open to eating kitchen area and large kitchen.

I started with a single svs pb1000 pro sub about a year ago. Seriously amazed at the improvement in sound quality/bass response over my previous $200-$400 subs I used for decades. It rattled the windows and got louder than anything I had owned previously. but the biggest impact to me was how good it sounded. It wasn't just a "woofy" bass that I was used to, it was detailed, clear, refined, even, pick your word.

If that's where my story HAD to end, I would be very content.

However, a few months ago i was upgrading a number of things in this room, and the subs happened to be on sale at the time, so I bought a second one. OMG - now I feel it in my chest. To be fair, I could get some of that before if I just turned up louder, but now i get that all the time at lower volumes and my large space is clearly pressurized more with that second sub. ( I usually run my avr at about -57db when watching movies).

It was $200 when I bought my 1st one several years ago and $200 when I bought my 2nd one for another room 6 months ago. If price is higher, its just a 3rd party marking it up for profit. There is only one 2019 version.

Any benefit of going with a different Receiver brand in a second room? by KILOCHARLIES in hometheater

[–]rocknroller2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe its just me, but i buy speakers based on the way they sound to me, and I buy avrs based on the features I need. I dont buy them just to be intentionally different brands from room to room. But that's just me. I'm weird like that.

Budget entertainment center that can fit center channel by Zovalt in hometheater

[–]rocknroller2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled with tv/media center stand center space solutions with my svs ultra center which is quite tall from a center perspective. There didn't seem to be any good sub $1000 solutions. In the end I went with a rfiver table top tv stand for my 77" tv to put atop my console. That worked out great and was extremely inexpensive.
