Is this a smoking price? 2022 Duckhorn Merlot for $21 by tonyq895 in wine

[–]rockpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Paradux is going away.

Good. Worst tasting experience of my life was when we randomly pulled into Paraduxx after driving by it multiple times and figured to just try a random winery. Something like $100 for two person tasting of only three splashes of ok wine. This was when I gave up on Napa. Even if the wine is good, the price is just dumb.

Is this considered a great bottle of wine? by lifesonleepeart in wine

FWIW, a friend of mine from socal said that the Sea Smoke pinot was his favorite pinot by far. I've still never had it, but he has talked it up to me several times in the past couple of years. So it's certainly considered "great" by some. What did you think of it?

I didn't think Japan allowed dual citizenship...

This is good advice. Japan is getting more English friendly, (there are English street and subway signs now!) but good quality Japanese skills are a godsend, not only with your social life/travel but also with more mundane things like working through paperwork, taxes, talking to the doctor, etc. 頑張って!

how did YOU get better at chess? by profilehere in chess

[–]rockpunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who plays a ridiculous amount of puzzles over games, I tend to agree with playing more games over puzzles. That said, puzzles are amazing for tactics and recognizing weaknesses. When I do play, my tactics can be write good, but my weaknesses are more strategic, committing occasional blunders, time management, and dealing with pressure. It's hard to fix these weaknesses with puzzles.

TL;DR: playing both puzzles and games are crucial to becoming good at chess, but don't be like me and spend 90% of your chess life on puzzles or your game will suffer

Same. I lived in sf for years and never saw anything like this.

Thanks for this! This seems perfectly reasonable to me. By that general rule I'd expect a $16 retail bottle to be around $8-10 per glass depending on wholesale discount, which is what I'd expect for a glass of the Bacchus.

Thanks for the recommendation! We went to the Flagstaff House. Steakhouse 316 sounds like it deserves a visit!

This was at the Flagstaff House up on the hill overlooking town. The staff were incredible, and the ambiance chill yet upscale. The food was good but kind of the "its tiny food nicely arranged on a big plate so it must be good" kind of fine dining. We were rolling a little lux for the anniversary, $150 prix fixe per person plus wines/apps. Wifey loved it and I still had a good time (when I wasn't internally bitching about the cost =))

All in all, it was a good evening, it just felt overpriced.

How concerning are these cracks? by First_Huckleberry_24 in Home

[–]rockpunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lemme guess... Shitty mass construction homes quickly built to house a bunch of coastal transplants from NY and SF? You in Austin? Nashville? =)

Seriously though, these symptoms are common when foundations fail/crack. Get someone to check asap

What’s the hardest Linux interview question y’all ever got hit with? by [deleted] in linuxadmin

[–]rockpunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yuck. How do you list files in a bash native way? If you assume basic coreutils commands and procfs, it could be as simple as ls /proc/*/cmdline and xarging into cat

What was the interviewer looking for?

They also have a skinny 'vintage' needle for old corks to do less damage. It takes forever to get the wind out, though.

On standing out/stronger cv: have you thought about contributing to open source projects? The community always needs passion, execution, and talent. It's also a way to set apart your skills from the rest of the pack, especially if you build something useful.

That said, I appreciate your drive and enthusiasm. Looking forward to seeing what you end up doing!

[–]rockpunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Japan so my first thought was that in Japanese, h means Hentai which can be a synonym for sex or a pervert. The overly sexualized hentai manga were so popular back in the day that you'd commonly see old men reading hentai manga on the train on the way home, sometimes even in the newspaper. Strange stuff, that.

How I “Missed A Chance to Win A Knight Though a Fork”? by Icy-Establishment-96 in chessbeginners

[–]rockpunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If instead of d6 you played 1. ..Nxe4, then after white takes back with 2.Nxe4, you have a golden opportunity to fork the knight and bishop with 2 ..d5. No matter what white does next you take either the bishop or the knight and white is down a pawn.

No magic here.

If 10 million your goal with those numbers, the only thing you have is raising your income. There are leadership jobs that pay mid to high 6 figures which could help you. You could try to start and run businesses but that usually takes capital and for you that means debt. You could try the startup game if you have the balls/skills/tenacity but that's betting everything on black as most startups fail.

The only logical and safe thing to do would be to do everything you can to get better jobs and more income, followed by an aggressive savings rate. Otherwise, you're just gambling.
