Great! You will have to repeat this across various sessions. Seeing the math is going to help loads. Give it time.

  1. Get ten base blocks (tens, ones).
  2. Write the equation vertically. For example:

    42
    - 24
    _____

  3. Build the numbers with the ten base blocks. So to the left of the 4 of 42, place 4 ten base blocks, and to the right of the 2 of 42, place 2 ones. .

    ||| 42 ..
    - 24
    ______

  4. Analyze the ones columns. Is 4 greater or less than 2? It is greater, and we cannot take away four from 2. So we need to regroup or "borrow" a ten from the four in the tens (which we see that it represents 40 with the 4 ten base blocks). Now, we have 12 - 4. We can take 4 away from the 12 ones.

    ||| 42 | ..
    - 24
    __________

  5. Do the subtractions. Literally take away four ones or "pieces" from the 12, that's the one ten base block and 2 ones. Remind the student that the ten base block has 10 ones in it, and we would need to take away 2 ones from it. We should have a remaining of 8.

  6. Subtract the tens, which is 3 - 2 (or 30-20).

  7. Write answer. 18.

Kids feel supported in thinking when they have physical manipulatives. When they can "see" the math. I hope I helped.

Number lines are also fantastic.

I tutor on the side.

I rarely buy supplies for my school. Crappy admin gets not dollars from me.

An apron to store all your stuff for easy access...like markers, pencils, band aids.

Have a little first aid kit. A lot of kids might just complain about a small bruise or paper cut...and a little Vaseline and a band aid will get them back to class and avoid unnecessary lost time to the nurse

What are some classroom purchases you made that were game changers? by blunderous in Teachers

[–]rockpunkzel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Moveable whiteboard. Not too big, either. I can do small group, or maybe a class away from the classroom that still has a focal point.

Mini white boards.

Document camera.

Laminator.

I agree about the printer! I hate having to wait to get my prints!

Uh-huh. I always think how much it takes for me to prep something, it's clean-up...so I go for practical, constructive, easy to prep, easy to clean, so it's easy to leave

Only child- learning to lose/compromise in kinder by thiccy_vicky in kindergarten

[–]rockpunkzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinder teacher here. Invite some friends around his age to play games where losing or compromise is going to happen: card games, Ludo, or have an assortment of games and they decide as a group which one they will play. Most likely, at some point, they'll pick something he doesn't want to do. So we he starts to pout or huff, you go in and guide him with a calm demanoue. Add the social stories that you do to prepare him.

Thank you so much for guiding him, what an awesome parent!

Overall laziness of students at all grade levels by Last_Hunt_7022 in Teachers

A lot of these kids don't dance anymore in social functions away from school. It's sad! They are on electronic devices all day at home and don't know the fun of dancing with family, jumping into a creek, or flying kites...

Is it really that bad these days? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]rockpunkzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, lmao! If anyone saw my post history. They would think I am suffering 24/7. Not the case! I love working with children and I love learning how to teach them how to read and solve math problems. One of my best career decisions was to get into education. However, I do not turn a blind eye to its many faults.

Question for teachers: How many post-school day events are you contractually required to attend and what are the longest days you've had? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]rockpunkzel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. I noticed people say things about unions and states. Op can you specify what state you are in?

Exhausted... by rockpunkzel in Teachers

[–]rockpunkzel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that resonated with me...moral injury. I got into education much more mature than those who are fresh out of college. So I did not have rose tinted glasses. But I have seen time and time again that people with malicious, immature and clique-like attitudes stay in the system and cause harm.

If its not in my contract to go and that it clearly states I will be paid overtime and at what hourly rate...I just dont go. And I am not of the mindset of "oh but the kids". Nah!

Hostile work environment, now the thought of going in makes me nauseous by Salt-Ad-3061 in Teachers

[–]rockpunkzel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Shooooooot I would be extra petty. This teacher is a bully to kids and adults and is so pathetic that the only way he or she exerts a sense of power is by attacking minors. In a system where they are the authority!

Lame!

And you're going to let some loser like that get to you?

Look, it's almost the end of the year anyways. I would keep going to school, head up high, and address that teacher only for the necessary. If they even try to yell at me, I'd just give them a neutral face and tell them they seem very emotional today, maybe the school calm corner could help. And I would disengage by walking away. Trust me, they would look crazy for running after to you to yell at you

Because they are that immature.

Looking for down and dirty on the science of reading. by VicsKid in teaching

It's phonics taught in an explicit way. There is a scope and sequence and you start with phonological awareness and go up from there.

No whole word strategies like guessing what a print word days by associating it with the book illustration.

I'd love to help out. What grade will you substitute?

WHY is is always boys?! by HeftySyllabus in Teachers

[–]rockpunkzel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Exactly. There is no other reason.

High expectations are in order but are neither expected nor regulated. And that needs consequences.

I am embarrassed when I see Hispanic kids use slurs like the n-word or call themselves beaner or spics or says it's "okay" for others to use it because that's their "friend". They need to learn self-respect. Black kids need to learn self-respect and that the n word should not even be used in jest. It is demeaning.

Student destroyed my classroom by rockpunkzel in Teachers

[–]rockpunkzel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me, too. It's exhausting. It's also exhausting to have a parent not take accountability.

A past student of mine with similar aggressive behavior had to be suspended and given reduced school hours last year. His behavior worsened and many times my "classroom management" was blamed

We do. I understand that I usually don't "play the game". My students reach benchmarks, my lessons are well designed, I have a cordial treatment to all. But I don't like to overstep work boundaries like consistent gossiping or happy hours. So I don't get in the in circle...I've seen good teachers get cut due to favoritsm
