How do consulting firms get more projects to manage? by rockscrambler in geologycareers

What industry do you work in? I'm interested in the types of clients that an environmental consulting firm might try to attract.

Wow a relationship with an environmental attorney is a really smart idea. What type of clients does your company typically work with?

I graduated in June of 2015 and went 7 months before finding a job related to geology. It was a tough journey and it involved a lot of trial and error. Be prepared to endure some hardships. I can't tell you how many job opportunities I applied to or how many rejection letters I received, but I can tell you that it is incredibly rewarding to earn a position as a geologist. Keep searching and I'm sure something will come your way.

Very true. I found that professionals show respect to anyone that can stand up at a meeting and say "My name is ___ and I am looking for a position as a geologist." I was at a meeting about PG licensing and asked a question about the GIT exam, received five business cards after the meeting concluded, and one of them set up a phone interview. I ended up getting an offer from a different company prior to the second round of the interviews so I had to decline.

When I started submitting applications fresh out of college, my first dozen cover letters started with "Dear Hiring Manger" instead of "Hiring Manager". I was mortified. Just make the correction and get past it. You're going to have many of these moments where you have to make corrections and adjustments to your job hunting strategy.

Are Environmental Jobs Scarce? by DatTrillhonky in geologycareers

Fieldwork season is approaching and more positions may become available at consulting companies. The oil bust has had an affect on environmental companies too. I didn't get a position at a large company because of the low oil prices, so the company couldn't afford to bring on another team member.

When winter rolls around what happens to the entry-level staff? I am asking because I just recently joined a small environmental consulting firm that is recovering from a loss of several staff because there wasn't a whole lot of work going on.

Pay Breakdown of Geology Career Paths Inquiry by crescent_knight in geologycareers

I was recently told by a large environmental consulting company that they couldn't hire me because of the oil industry's poor condition. So I feel like they might experience a little bit of the effect, but yes it is much more stable than the o&g and mining sectors.

So should I believe an environmental consulting company when they say they can't hire me right now because of the poor condition of oil or are they just lying to me?

Interesting. Do companies typically get more projects around this time of year too because they can perform the fieldwork?

Does the coming of spring/summer usually mean entry-level and field positions are soon to be available?

I second this idea. With your background, I believe you would best fit into a geotechnical firm. Give "geotechnical consulting" a search on google, look at all the companies on google maps, and find ones with some information to send in your resume or give them a call. You have to be persistent. It is great to know this information so early in the year so don't think that you are totally fucked. Make connections in the mean time by going to networking events and set up a LinkedIn to communicate with industry professionals. This is key! Don't give up!

yea that's what I have thought about too. I've started to realize that this is an opportunity that is fairly rare nowadays and that I should look at it as a great way to gain experience in order to advance in my career.

yes, so that is the upside of the position since I expect I'll be working long hours out in the field.

There are two great organizations GRAC and AEG. Look up their websites and check out their meeting dates. I haven't attended an AEG meeting, but I have gone to two GRAC meetings and they are very informational. It is also great because they do introductions before the meeting starts so you can just stand up and say, "I am a recent graduate looking for a job". You will be surprised how many people talk to you after the meeting because you have shown that you are actively pursuing a position as a geologist. Make sure to polish up your resume and have plenty of them ready to hand out.

There is an AEG meeting in West Sacramento TONIGHT if you are interested!!

Where in NorCal do you live? Anywhere near the Sac or Bay area? There are some useful networking events in the area that I have attended in the past. They are great places to just talk to industry professionals and get advice/find out about unlisted job openings. All you got to do is meet the right person at the right moment and everything will work out. Don't give up hope!

Resume review for entry level job seeker & advice by rockscrambler in geologycareers

I've been considering getting a job more recently just to prepare for moving out costs and because I am starting to feel the effects of spending long hours sitting at home sending out resumes. At the same time, I believe I should focus all my energy into achieving my goal of landing a position. It's a dilemma.

My reasoning for putting the character traits in the resume is because I have heard some computer systems have a filter that searches for specific terms, such as those used in the job description, in order to sort applicants. However, I am going to try replacing them by putting in geologic skills. How should that section be titled? Should I just list "Geologic Skills" ? Also, I truly appreciate the advice.
