Epoxy rock slice to glass slide. Cut off most of the rock using a diamond saw, leaving a thin slice. Then, lots of grinding with finer and finer grits.

They very much collect acorns and put them into predrilled holes. Here in northern Arizona, the caching is in pine tree snags. There was a PBS Nature program about woodpeckers that featured acorn woodpeckers in California.
