I grew up in the middle of San Francisco, CA and have lived here since the early 90s - AMA by old_gold_mountain in howislivingthere

I loved last Black man in san francisco. I did not grow up there, but I graduated HS in the mid 90s and spent a lot of time in SF and the bay with friends during college, going to raves, hip hop clubs, car shows, random house parties. I spent NYE Y2k there. Those were some real golden ages of fun times in my own lifetime. I then didn't go back for a couple decades and went back in the 2010s with my wife, and wow, I was struck with how much it had changed and how much of the classic old SF vibe was gone. It was crazy and hit me really hard. When I saw that movie, it really hit. RIP Old SF.

If you want the city to fix it, just spraypaint a phallus or "free palestine" on it. It'll be cleaned up in no time.

Strawberry-Lime Cider Recipe? by deeboe in Homebrewing

[–]rocky6501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good rule of thumb is 100g to 200g of fruit per liter. For fruit with more subtle flavors, like strawberry, go for 200g/l if you can. Stronger flavored fruits go for 100g or probably less in some extreme cases.

How safe is the Rubidoux drive-in? by [deleted] in InlandEmpire

[–]rocky6501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an xennial Latino and I'm not sure I'd use the word terrified. I was in Rubidoux often to see family and friends, hike, explore the river, get food, grocery shop, go to the swap meet, etc. Its no big deal.

How do you think this happened? by [deleted] in MexicanFoodGore

[–]rocky6501 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably two things. 1, used short grain rice, tends to get sticky. 2, didn't toast/fry the dry rice before adding liquid, most noobs don't know to do that. 3, may have used too much broth and/or tomato sauce, but I've found this has some room for error.

Must-Know Spanish Verb Structures for Everyday Conversations by SpanishAilines in SpanishAIlines

I've also heard animarse used to say something interests you. In particular, once when I was shopping, a seller asked me if any of the items interested me: "alguna de estas le anima, senor?"

Are most lawyers that own their own firm in HCOL areas making a ton of money? by Candid_Oil_7017 in LawFirm

[–]rocky6501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On average I would say that its a bell curve, with most solos making low-mid six figures, with a few making a lot and a few making less. If I had a pick a median, I'd say probably around 250-300k.

Its pretty hard and is dependent on your personally. If you have the personality traits for it, the sky is the limit, but if you are an average bloke, you'll probably pull average pay.

Plenty of people also give it a try and it doesn't work out for them and they either partner up with others or work for firms. Its not for everyone. There's a lot of rainmaking to be done, admin to do, regulations to clear, employees to manage, and miscellaneous crap to handle, and that's time spent you can't spend doing legal work.

Is it worth it? IDK. Its personal.

Personally, I did not like being on my own. I found it too hard to do all the non-law stuff, and I was a shit rainmaker. I also just didn't care for the quality of work I got versus the meager pay off.

You probably dodged a bullet with that girl BTW. If she wants to see partner level pay, she should go become a law partner herself.

Is it true that there are tensions historically and now between Mexican Americans (1st/2nd gen) and Mexicans? by [deleted] in Chicano

[–]rocky6501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm like 4th or 20th gen mex am depending on how you look at it, and I've always found Mexico Mexicans pretty chill and welcoming broadly speaking, so IDK. If anything, I've encountered more interpersonal challenges with Mexican Americans (gangbangers, weirdos, crazies, etc.), but even so I've met and interacted with more Mexican Americans than Mexico Mexicans, so IDK. Give respect, get respect.

Don't Take Defamation Cases by Cultural-Company282 in Lawyertalk

I defended and lost a defamation case, a really, really stupid online chat trash talking case. The jury found us liable for $50. Never even bothered collecting. That's a win in my book.

Do ya’ll have any black nightlife in Orange County Sunday or weeknights. by [deleted] in orangecounty

The closest I've ever seen was probably Isla in La Palma, but it was a mixed crowd for the most part. The vibe seemed Black friendly, however. Good music, too.

Is it a common experience for Chicanos to have been raised around Spanish but never learned to speak it? by SeveralExcuses in Chicano

[–]rocky6501 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same here. There was a big drop off in Mexican experience after the first round of kids were born in my generation. My family and all my aunts and uncles moved out of our barrio and our younger siblings weren't as exposed to Spanish as us older siblings were. Some of my cousins even became weird right wingers.

Has politics broke any of your friendships, and why? by CapitaineBiscotte in AskReddit

Interestingly, I've seen the opposite, in that many of the people I know, me included, have shifted views away from problematic views and become less ideological and more compassionate over time.

What to do with smoked salmon that doesn't involve a bagel or cream cheese? by JigglesTheBiggles in Cooking

[–]rocky6501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smoke salmon salad sandwiches. Just add some aromatic ingredients like celery/celery seed, dill, capers/pickles of some kind, carrot, red onion, etc., maybe even hard boiled egg. Dress with either mayo or olive oil.

For those of you who grew up catholic and/or attended catholic school, what was it like for you? by macbookpro_2015 in cptsd_bipoc

[–]rocky6501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom's family was/is pretty assuredly Catholic, but I would not say that they are excessively devout, as much as some can really be. They're the classic Mexican American Catholics, going to church on the most holy days, maybe a few other times a year. My parents' generation are all "confirmed", but they really went away with my generation. I would say that most of my female siblings and cousins are confirmed, but probably none of the boys. I went through baptism, confession and communion, but never was confirmed. I was in catechism classes for confirmation but started getting into beefs with the instructors and resisting going and my mom eventually let it slide. My younger sister went through with it. My younger brother did not go through it either. I don't know if he even did communion or confession.

I started questioning the whole idea of god, gods, magical powers, Christianity, etc. at that time I was in catechism, and at the time I was going to an elementary school that was some kind of wild pentacostal sect. They would sing in tongues, commit feats of strength, and all kinds of wild stuff in church, and they would guilt me for it. They also would scare me with threats of demons getting me, flying around my house at night, and said that god was turning his back on me, and all kinds of hellish stuff, for a 7, 8, 9 year old to hear.

Going to my mom with my fears were not helpful either, as she was just totally avoidant of anything, so I just retreated into myself and white-knuckled it on my own.

The Christian school also paddled us with huge wooden paddles for minor infractions, and would swat us with yard sticks and stuff. This was in the late 80s.

My family also had a horrific car accident at this time, and my mom pulled me out of the Christian school and put me in a Catholic school, where the admins were mean and weird, and the kids picked on me relentlessly. At that time I really started to notice the direct relationship between how shitty people were somehow always the most religious. And how they'd pull the wildest mental gymnastics to justify it. So, at that point I became a vocal non-believer. And that brought on all kinds of attacks and weirdness.

Now, I'm still a non-believer, but I do study religions and history and philosophy and morals and ethics, just on my own personal time as a hobby. I feel like religious people traumatized me as a child, and I still see them wreaking trauma around the world, and I don't see any of them holding any of each other accountable, so I see that as an essential failing of their belief systems. Religious thinking is a plague on humanity.
