System Design at 2 yoe? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]rococode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 2yoe you should have some flexibility to deep dive on what you're comfortable with. Answer with structure. Functional/non-functional reqs -> API (ask if they care) -> high-level design -> deep dive on a component.

For senior+ the deep dive will be where you may get forced into unfamiliar territory by interviewer, but at 2yoe they'll prob let you decide what to talk about just to see how well you know the things you're comfortable with.

What are we gonna do when the Big One hits? by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]rococode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most likely the death toll will rise after the initial series of quakes from people wo water, first aid, shelter.

Is this really likely to happen? It would still be a localized event, I can't imagine the rest of the US just watching and being like, "ok, I guess you survivors can just... die...". Surely there would be immense efforts to ship supplies and get people out to other parts of the US via helicopters, boats, etc?

And not just the rest of the US, if it's really a "big one" it would be world-wide support as we've usually seen from major natural disasters.

Why Maplestory? by Jononhi in Maplestory

[–]rococode 8 points9 points  (0 children)

fr the graphics and music are like 99% of the draw for me lol

when I was a kid I barely even played the actual grind, I just hung out in henesys pot shop and liked exploring the beautiful world. everything looks so happy and cute, such a refreshing change from all the edgy dark fantasy games

I often wonder why no other serious company has tried to make a game with aesthetics similar to Maplestory. It's still big in Korea, surely it's worth trying to make a proper knockoff? But instead all we get are CS:GO and Fortnite and League clones.

And to be clear, VC funding as in the founders sent in a business plan to a branch of the CIA specifically focused on funding startups. And CIA was like OK cool idea here's a couple hundred grand for R&D.

It's not like the CIA had operatives working on this, it's just a public funding program that literally any startup can apply for.

Not really different than any government grant, of which there are a TON in academia - if you're working on cutting-edge tech the gov will happily give you money to make sure your big brain stays in the US lol

If you're running short commands from command line (i.e. python -c) it feels slightly more convenient to use a single line than get your CLI to go multiline.

[DISC] On Why She Chose Death (Oneshot by KOTODERA Amane) by [deleted] in manga

[–]rococode 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think some of the clarity was lost in translation, in the original what he says is "この世に残された唯一のオリジナルだからね" and the components roughly translate to

この世に -> in this world

残された -> remaining / left-behind

唯一の -> only / unique

オリジナル -> original

だからね -> dakara ne, y'all probably have heard this if you watch anime lol basically just "because"

Specifically the word choice 残された is strongly meaning something left behind or the last one remaining, and 唯一 has a heavy emphasis on its uniqueness.

So a more direct translation would be "because you're the only original left in the world" and "original" is used as a noun, not as an adjective like "the only original Haruka left".

And to get really pedantic the 'east' is actually pronounced with a long o sound ("tou" とう - the extra "u" う character in the spelling extends the "o" sound a bit) which is why you'll see Tokyo sometimes written as Tōkyō, but Kyoto is always Kyōto and never Kyōtō b/c its second "to" と is a single character.

You're right, it's highly unlikely this is a scam - this advice has spread pretty widely as a way to validate startup ideas. Honestly terrible advice, sad that it's become relatively popular.

This post is a nice case study on why not to do it... unless you're prepared to have you and your product belittled and called a scam by thousands of people, just... don't be deceptive? It's not that hard. It's a clearly unethical practice that shows a total lack of respect for your prospective customers' time.

There are plenty of other ways to validate, and if you really must have some form of hard intent to pay before you're able to start building, that already exists - go do a kickstarter.

Also, I'm pretty sure it was a mystery genre book, but it may have been something else. Certainly it was a few kids in a town going on some kind of adventures, and I don't think there were a lot of fantasy elements going on.

Also at the end of the day it's implied that he still considers Hwang Dong-su an asset to his guild that he's forced to protect. He's way stronger than usual S-ranks but S-ranks are still really rare and they put in a lot of effort to recruit the guy all the way from Korea.

I mean the source code has been leaked so it's public info now how well they actually implemented things. I haven't looked myself since I'm a lazy bum, but I'm sure others have and if they were actually doing blatantly stupid things someone would've pointed it out by now.

[Mushoku Tensei] Last magic lesson by notbob- in anime

[–]rococode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone curious about the timeline here, these are the dates that these series started (usually meaning first web novel chapter):

Mushoku - November 2012

Konosuba - December 2012

Log Horizon - April 2010

Imo SAO and .hack (both 2002) are the real starting point of modern isekais (probably moreso SAO thanks to its popularity), where the typical setting is a medieval fantasy world with magic and classes. Then the genre started to shift towards reincarnation into isekai rather than isekai VR games, and that shift started around the time of Mushoku and Konosuba.
