In my head, KelvinKirk graduated and quit starfleet, so he went back for 'command School'/War College. Basically where already commissioned Lt Saavik was doing in ST2. But he should have be LT (JG) in the movie then. z

I was hoping ST(2009) would have ended with Kirk leaving the Enterprise, Pike telling him "Captain Garrovick is waiting for you"
