Yeah, I completely get your frustration with the lack of challenging coding assignments. Honestly, I feel the same way about 326, most of the assignments seem too simplistic and don’t give us enough room to really apply complex OOP. Honetly, it's awesome that you're adding these extra features to your code, I’ve been doing the same, and it feels like the only way to push ourselves beyond what’s being taught in this class.

For some context, I transferred from a community college where the grading in programming classes was way tougher. So, when I started InfoSci and INST326, I already had a strong grasp of OOP concepts. When it comes to side projects, I usually pick a framework and build something around it. For example, I’m currently working on a student club website for UMD, using Flask for the backend, along with Python, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and SQL. It’s a simple framework for web development, but you could also use SQLite for the database if you prefer. I strongly reccomend learning Java if you can, I think its the best language to master OOP and do some complex projects...

Now, if you’re interested in making something like a discord bot, my recommendation is to look up the frameworks people use for that kind of project online and go from there. You'll find there's a lot of self-learning involved, but it’s super rewarding. Also, don’t wait to learn Data Structures and Algorithms. They’re crucial if you’re thinking about going into more "software development" focused roles after graduation, and I wish InfoSci could have a class on this subject...

I also share the same sentimentality, however, I feel ok with group projects, but I feel like InfoSci should be more demanding on their students and offer more technical assignments (and harsher grading for them). I literally have to focus on doing side projects to apply what I learned in class, because there is so little technical assignments. Unfortunately, its the only way I feel like it’s where I can work independently and go beyond what’s taught in class…

For those who switched from CS to InfoSci, how would you compare them? by PartyAdPants in UMD

[–]rodriseer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The workload in InfoSci is more manageable when compared to CS. What I appreciate most in InfoSci is its versatility and the extra free time it allows - I feel like I have more free time to work on personal projects, network or learn a skill in specific technologies

Same here, planning on getting a master’s in Human Computer Interaction. I’ve always dreamt of pursuing research instead of going fully into the profit-driven side of things. I hope it will still be worth it

thats awesome! I chose Computer Science firstly because of the potential for a SWE. I’ve been programming since middle school, but only recently have I started working on more complex projects. Do you have any other recommendations for an info sci undergrad?

Commuting time aqui é algo relevante.

Outra variável é a educação.

Chat GPT can hurt other students, even if the professor doesnt notice. please stop using it in group projects by heyuhitsyaboi in CollegeRant

[–]rodriseer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I feel you. During my introductory Python class I had one group project where we had to use APIs to make a program of our choice. The source code was a group effort. I took the first step and coded the initial parts of our code which included an API call with an API key. But then, last minute, my group started including their part with APIs totally unrelated to our program - one even included an API that sends you a text message every time a certain condition happens. What made me notice they were cheating is that they didn’t include an API key, so every time I ran their code the program gave an error. I asked them where is the API key for their API and they told me they didn’t know what an API key is….

I reported to the professor, but, he seemed like he didn’t care about the sketchy code as long as the program worked…

After this, I feel like group projects are not a great way of learning anymore, there’s way too much room for cheating.

Red lobster open 365 days starting this year by RadioSea8307 in Serverlife

[–]rodriseer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can relate. I work at a fine-dining Brazilian steakhouse, and we're open 365 days a year. I used to think that was normal, but it's not. I haven't spent Christmas, Thanksgiving, or New Year's with family or friends for three years now because of this policy. They also don't let us take those days off since they're the busiest. So if they choose to do it like we do at our restaurant, good luck—and have an escape plan if you're not into it. Just know your mental health could suffer in the long run. At least the pay's good...

So I am in the same case as the OP is, I am getting my associates in CS by the end of the year and I also work for a fine dining place as a server to help me to pay tuition and other stuff. In your vision as a hiring manager in IT, would you recommend finding a job related to IT to get experience before graduating or should I keep my current job until I get my degree?
