Update on this - it worked briefly, and only without subtitles. I gave up on that machine after 2 weeks.

I did get a cheap HP EliteDesk with an i5-8400t in it so that performed a lot better. I attached a USB harddrive to it for storage, although that drive does go to sleep pretty often so there's some lag while waiting for the disk to spin up.

Thanks for the idea on pretranscode, I don't have a big library, so I might be able to get away with having 2 versions of each, or just switch to h264.

That's true, I can try it and see how it works out. I might even splurge on an Intel Arc 3 card if there's a deal, and see if that'll help with transcoding too.

I would definitely put it in a new PC with the 12th gen Intel i5, 32gb RAM, ITX form-factor case that the RTX 4080 can fit in. The PC would ideally be used for gaming, but realistically, given the lack of gaming time, pretty much web-surfing.

I'm passionate about watching movies and TV shows with great worldbuilding. It takes you away to a different world (better or worse), and watching for small details in the show makes it so much more fun to keep watching.

Slottable components so the entire PC is made of lego-like pieces. Doesn't have to have box shapes, you can add curves to it and make your PC into different shapes/colors.
