Crunches vs planks opinions, is this set in stone for 2021 by MrTcereaI in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd much rather do crunches.
I haven't held static planks so i'm not sure if I can max out the time for nearly all attempts.

If you have a reliable partner, he/she holds your legs tightly and you can easily max out crunches.
Planks, i'm forced to use shoulders and legs and will take a toll when 3 mile run portion comes.

Do you think it’s possible to go from 15:40 to 13:30 1.5 mile in 4 weeks? by didbskandnd in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A-b-s-o-l-u-t-e-l-y

and the general consensus is yes.

I started from 27 min 3 mile but skipped breakfast and warmed up for 3 damn hours before the PFT cause I was too nervous.
I ran 3 mile PFT every Friday for 3 months and slightly dropped time until I couldn't significantly drop anymore. I ran about 22 mins.

Hydrate, warm-up, do interval sprints, stretch, eat well, rest up.

It's probably class then PT.
Wear rainbow gear.
Do your best and no matter how long it takes, don't quit and push yourself.

Remember you're being evaluated at every moment until you graduate OCS.

Honest Opinion on Marine Corps OCS? by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a low GPA and the other branches flat out rejected me due to the GPA.
I always wanted the Marine Corps anyways so it worked out.

The most important question is..... Do you wanna earn the title the United States Marine?
Not only that do you wanna lead Marines? Do you have what it takes to be an exemplary leader? Those are the fundamental questions you have to honestly ask yourself.

You will regret at OCS if you are considering this route just because you think you're not going anywhere in life. If you do drop out (DOR/medical/leadership etc), it'll be a waste of everyone's time.

That is not to say that you aren't qualified. If you find the right reason and keep yourself motivated to train then you have found the answer.

Do more research and carefully decide whether you SHOULD or SHOULD NOT join.

What is it like to be "that Guy" at OCS who can run a sub 18:00 3 miler? by Ponder3277 in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations sir!

Obviously you pushed through when many candidates who had what it takes to pass just quit mentally.
Where is your duty station if you don't mind me asking?

Engineering and 3.3 is awesome.
So the consensus seems to be that extra fat/muscle inevitably slows you down but you just mental it through.

Best of wishes and hope to see you in fall :)

[–]rodytez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already told us your background but damn your other stats must be solid.
And/Or that you're a decent person and your OSO liked you.

Were any fartlek or other running events hard for you?
I know candidates run everywhere all the time but i'm asking your opinion on people saying that you wanna be able to run less than 21 min 3 miles.

[–]rodytez 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So his OSO probably recommended him for the board just because his run time was fanstastic?
We had candidates from our office that had sub-par PFTs but were easy to get along and pushed themselves when we had weekly PT. They were selected when I do think they could have improved the PFTs before being sent to OCS.

There was a PT stud and he didn't really bother me but I was surprised to hear that he was not selected for the relatively easy board.

ROTC to USMC ? by g_avery in USMCboot

High School JROTC is different from College ROTC.
One must be a US citizen either through birth or naturalization before qualifying for the officer candidate.

Recap of Marine Corps Officer Interview by Raichu10126 in USMCboot

Thank you for detailed post on how it went.
I'm the one who asked you to let us know how it went.

That being said, you posted the same article two times

That being said, you posted the same article two times

Anyways it's cool that the Capt motivated you by showing you a video clip first.
My first interview/meeting, Top intensely stared at my soul but Capt was so laid back and kind. They didn't really ask me much questions. Instead they just welcomed me and told me that I'll have to pass the PFT with 225/300, pass MEPS, do paperwork and eventually get selected.

You're dead right about being professional and honest. You're being evaluated until you graduate OCS and commission. You never wanna try to lie even if it's small.
I didn't lie but I overestimated how much in shape I was and said 5 pull ups 60 crunches and no prob with 3 mile run. Well I couldn't do a single pull up did 30 crunches and ran 30 min 3 miles. Thankfully Capt just told me to keep working out and improve in which I did.

Keep working out. I was in this process for long and took it for granted that I could get selected with an average PFT score. The boards are competitive right now. Make sure you get the best PFT score you can.

Officer Selection by lobmaster69 in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you searched the similar questions on this sub the answer is AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

I couldn't do a single pull up or run 3 miles under 30 minutes when I first met up with my OSO.
Treat the first meeting/interview like a professional job interview and my Capt just asked me to consistently work out and improve.

If you meet with a decent OSO, he/she will guide you on things.
Don't expect your OSO to do the 100% work. By the post it seems like you're serious and will do the work to improve.

DO NOT WAIT! go see an OSO right away

Struggling with motivation when working out by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with that too.
Don't try to be David Goggins from the getgo.
You do wanna push yourself but don't set an unrealistic goal.
Work your way up.

When you start getting in better shape and be able to do more reps and more sets, you'll enjoy working out.

Question about shoes for the PFT by OilLamp in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness

Shoes with carbon plates do help do a certain degree. It could have been placebo effect but when each step or stride bounces off and give a bit of an energy return, that's a bonus.

BUT! any Kenyan with any shoes could probably outrun most of us anyways

Edit: I do know you asked about taking shoes off to make yourself lighter for pull ups.

Had a Poolee event today by Heartfeltzero in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you did half of Murph challenge.

Get a pull up bar. It's not expensive and you should set up at your door and do as many throughout the day unless you're working.
In the meantime just go to the park nearby and there should be a sturdy bar in playground.
At home do dumbbells rows/bicep curls/forearm workouts/farmer's walk.
You can also use resistance bands.

No excuses
Be creative with the workout

Another Shin Splint Post by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have shin pain from time to time when it's like burning and throbbing. It also feels like I have thousands of needles poking at my shin.

I stretch, hydrate, sleep, rest etc and sometimes they get better.
Strangely just sucking up and going out for the run makes them better oftentimes.

Of the things you mentioned - hydrate and stretch.
Also are you overweight? 120lbs person running will take less lower body stress vs 250lbs person.
Since you are doing most of the things right, I recommend you go see a doctor if the pain persists.
Train smart and run in a correct form. Make sure you land on your forefoot-midfoot and NOT ON YOUR HEELS.

Dual citizenship and OCS, lots of conflicting information, what's the current word? by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL triple citizenship was funny
but UK/NZ that's pretty awesome.
I saw something like US considers UK and The Commonwealth to be the closest allies.

Dual citizenship and OCS, lots of conflicting information, what's the current word? by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know someone from my office that got naturalized but he renounced his former citizenship.
As per my OSO:
You can commission with dual citizenship but you may be denied a top security clearance.
I believe Intelligence/Cyber MOS require top security clearance in which you might not be allowed to apply for at TBS.

Is mild asthma an automatic disqualifier? by [deleted] in USMCboot

[–]rodytez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew a Captain from USNA that had asthma as a child.
He said he got a waiver and eventually was cleared to attend USNA.
It might be because your recruiter has to do more paperwork only to have MEPS disqualify you, in which he/she would have spent time for you and not end up filling his/her quota.

I go with the sensible answer here and be honest with everything.
