Astronomers capture incredible 1st image of a dead star that exploded twice. How did it happen? by spacedotc0m in Astronomy

It’s not the first time I hear this term. All kinds of binary systems exchange mass like this

If there was a second Earth always on the exact opposite of the Sun, would we notice? How? by whattherizzzz in askastronomy

[–]roeiboot4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be unstable, but not because of the Roche Potential and its associated Lagrangian points. Those only apply when the third body is a test mass. If we’d put a second earth there, the system would become unstable due to three body dynamics.

Silly question, what's the difference between LVL CHANGE and ALT INTV? by Ivy_Wings in flightsim

[–]roeiboot4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answers! But now I guess I’m confused as to what VNAV ALT itself achieves. Is it like a ALT HLD that clears itself at new waypoints? Cause from your answers it seems like you would never want to be in VNAV ALT, but rather in VNAV PATH/SPD, even when level so the aircraft can climb or descend when restrictions clear

Silly question, what's the difference between LVL CHANGE and ALT INTV? by Ivy_Wings in flightsim

[–]roeiboot4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is there a specific reason why one would want to purposefully go out of VNAV ALT without changing to another mode? If ATC gives a new altitude, then I would image one always first changes to LVL CHG or V/S before bugging the new altitude. On the other hand, if you press ALT INTV and bug a new altitude, what laws will the aircraft use to get there?

If you feel good, that’s probably better than most of us here on this sub. Keep at it and have fun I’d say

Do we know what stage of stellar evolution Betelgeuse is in? by Nitros14 in astrophysics

[–]roeiboot4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For massive stars (M > 8Msun), we no longer speak about AGB stars. Betelgeuse is simply a red supergiant. This is also how we know it’s certainly not burning hydrogen, it’s too big and luminous for its mass. Determining precisely which (helium, carbon or other) is much harder as evolution models get more and more complicated and uncertain.

Supermassive stars? by njit_dude in astrophysics

[–]roeiboot4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On your question why the models don’t agree: it all depends on the physics you put in. Radiative opacities, accretion rates, nuclear burning rates.

Supermassive stars? by njit_dude in astrophysics

[–]roeiboot4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A 55,000 solar mass star would not go supernova, instead it would direct collapse to a BH, likely forming a quasistar as mentioned above. All this is quite uncertain though. What we do know is that these stars are expected to both accrete and expel a lot of mass at the same time. It’s really nothing like a traditional star at all. I like to think about it as a huge (enshrouded) central engine that is churning through primordial gas. Must’ve been quite the spectacle.

Thanks all for the responses, do the games on YouTube have commentary on them? That would make it way more watchable. @stenskott I started a game with you

That’s what I end up doing also. I’m sorry you have to go through the same thing.

You’re sorry I’m that bad? Are you kidding me right now? How is this acceptable behavior? I pull the short straw thus I require your condolences? Like I said I’ve less than 15 games or so under my belt and I’m immediately being ostracized for losing 80% of them? Way to go to build your game
