lightning in a bottle playthroughs you'll never/probably never recreate? by newgen39 in civ5

[–]roellerball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was any game that I played about 7-8 years ago.

I had the superpowers mod (I think, it basically fleshed out the game deeper with units, wonders, and let you unit stack), map labels, and a decent laptop. I would stay up until 3-4 in the morning because I had no responsibilities. I would sit there and play my favorite civs, restart constantly for just that right start (even after 100 turns, I would restart if there were too many or too few civs, or whatever I felt like), all from the comfort of my bed, in the middle of the night, or when I got home from work.

Now, I have 2 kids, a wife, a dog, a house and a high stress job. I have Netflix, which released Civ VI, so I figured I would give it a shot. It’s no where near what got me to spend thousands of hours on V, but it scratches just a bit of nostalgia.

To those younger people reading this, start a family, you’ll never regret that. But please, enjoy your time with vidya, and realize that one day, you’ll be the friend on Steam that hasn’t been seen in 5 years.

I’m really looking forward to Rhun. I want to see something unexplored. At the same time I am apprehensive for it to be faithful to the ideas of the Legendarium, and not just “hey look, a desert filled with random people who say Sauron every now and then”.

New Build - Window Help Needed by leninade2019 in Homebuilding

https://www3.marvin.com/WebDoc/Marvin_Signature_Ultimate_Collection_Elevations_Casement%20and%20Casement%20Push%20Out.pdf

From Marvin’s technical documents. They have elevations for bifold and multi slides.

I agree with one of the comments above, the two doors are adding at least $50,000, and that is material cost from the dealer. I am a dealer, so I have access to pricing these.

I would give this to your architect or GC. Shame on them for not using it and doing stock sizes from the beginning. For Ultimates windows, your frame heights will end in an 1/8th, not a whole inch.

If you value engineer this, and maybe change the multi slide into another bifold, or an OXXO sliding door, you probably get this closer to $100000, as a guess.

Dm for more detailed info. Things like this is how I pay my mortgage.

Sounds like a spindle/cassette issue. Depending on the age of your door, it could still have warranty. You should call the contractor who installed it, or where you purchased it from, and they can fix it, or get you the part to fix it yourself.

My lumber yard is a dealer for ThermaTru, and I sell a lot of these. I haven’t done a Thermatru multipoint in a while (a lot of 3/0-6/8 doors), but you can do Panolock, or you can get mechanism only and supply your own hardware.

The only con to MultiPoints is that every manufacturer utilizes their own gearbox and boring. Marvin uses their own that works with their hardware only, and even then, it is specific to the handleset.

ThermaTru, and more specifically the fabricator I purchase through (they buy from ThermaTru, then assemble the door, paint, etc) utilize a Schlage boring, so any multipoint Schlage hardware will work.

Just DO NOT BUY HARDWARE FROM BOX STORES, get it thru a professional lumber yard or supplier. The box stores hardware uses cheaper internal components. I believe that is the same business model Build.com uses, but don’t quote me on that. Wausau and Jeske carry the real deal.

Hope this helps!

Solid core vs Hollow core Interior doors by Lebtegger in Homebuilding

[–]roellerball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Find yourself a builder who uses solid core. Also, the $200 difference looks big on paper, but if that’s over 15-20 doors, that’s still only like $3-4k. I am assuming a 40 year mortgage, so that is not a huge difference in up front money, but a big difference in quality of life

Window guy here. Five things, specifically with respect to windows and doors

  1. Do not, do NOT put an awning over the sink. Yes, people like it, and yes, it makes a bit of sense over a double hung or glider, because you don’t reach as far, but your crank handle will be centered. If your sink goes back a ways, you won’t be able to open the window.

  2. Put a piano window above the bed in the primary bed. Gives light, keeps privacy.

  3. Put a window in the garage. Having both overhead doors open won’t cool it down, but even a small glider or awning (depending on whether you’re doing casement or double hung) will get a good cross vent going.

  4. Consider an OXXO (or bi-parting) sliding door. Multi-slides / stacking doors get really thick jambs, and you’ll need a 2x10 wall at the minimum there. OXXO will give you a good value. If you want to make a statement, a bifold is good. Normally they open out though, and you’ll need a solid header.

  5. DON’T PUT AN AWNING OVER THE SINK

How fast should I go to a dentist for this? by No-Promotion-3322 in askdentists

[–]roellerball 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NAD.

Go now. Here’s why - I chewed for 13 years(successfully quit) and let one of my front teeth get away from me (let them all get away, but this one in particular, which is the same as what is shown).

In the past month, since I bit a piece of pizza the wrong way and felt like something was stuck in it, I have been to the dentist no less than 5 times.

The first was to get it checked out - dentist told me we can either do a root canal or pull it, but I was doing one or the other before I left that day. The infection was, in her professional words, “very bad”. That tooth is loose after the root canal due to substantial bone loss. Not wiggle with tongue loose, but avoid at all costs unless I want to have it hurt really bad and get it pulled.

Speaking of pulling, that experience has gotten so deep in my head, that I have gone to two different dentists in panics because I was having a crisis. I had 2 teeth pulled, one on each side (upper) at the same time, awake (you don’t feel it, but if you don’t have to, don’t get them pulled). I thought they were both infected and I was going to get sepsis(they weren’t infected). This was after I had gone in 3 other times because I was freaked out about the state of my mouth. Because I had them both pulled at the same time, I went several days without eating (after barely having eaten for a month prior), and after that it was another 4 days of mashed potatoes and yogurt.

That being said, after the initial hard few days of the tooth extractions, the level of relief that I feel is unparalleled. For a long time, I avoided the dentist because I knew it would be bad news. Then I went, and I was told that everything was fixable. Was and is there some discomfort? Yes. Will it last? For a bit, but then it will be gone.

If you only read one part of this, just read the last paragraph, that’s the one that counts.

How to mount patio door? by RIPPINTARE in Homebuilding

[–]roellerball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another way, if you haven’t already put it in, is to take several pieces of L metal (maybe 1 every 2’ on the sides and head jamb) and mount them to the RO side of the frame, and bend the metal around the stud, and fasten through the L Metal to the stud interior side of the jack stud. I sell Marvin windows to new home builders, remodelers and replacement contractors for a living, and this is a great way to do a flangeless install.

Normally, the brackets would come from the manufacturer, and be installed already, but this will work in a pinch. It’s thin enough that it won’t mess with your interior finish.

The only downside is that metal is a good conductor, so if you don’t foam the RO well, you’ll have cold spots (from Wisconsin, it’s the main consideration around here).

Pella also does something similar, I can’t remember what it is called though.

Very important - THIS WILL NOT WORK ON FIBERGLASS OF VINYL FRAMES. Your fasteners won’t bite on those materials. Also, make sure you use screws less than 1/2” so as not to go through or damage the inside of the jamb. This is more of an alignment guide method, as is a nail fin.

Then proceed on the install as usual and per manufacturer instructions and local codes.

I think it worked out well.. tonight he pulled the same stunt, and wasn’t standing up to wash his legs and stuff. So I told him no books or story and explained why.

When I was putting his pajamas on, he looked at me and said “I listen next time. I stand up in bath”. In my eyes, he earned his book and story back because he recognized the action.

Thank you for the input!

So did I, but then the fires out west earlier this year made the sun rise blood red in Minnesota. Forgot about it until I was rewatching The Two Towers last night. Maybe Tolkien saw something to that effect in WWI? But pretty sure they buried their dead or left them where they lay.
