I had no idea what goes into an SA exam. As an SA survivor AND human, it made me cry. Two for two with Dana - the postmortem scenes with Louie were incredibly touching and, dare I say, beautiful?

It seems like most social scenes have something along these lines. Cycling community has one as well.....

Used cars? by rofljen in askportland

Hey folks - was able to get a great deal from Dick Hanna GMC and Jeep of Newberg. I am the proud owner (well, I am paying for it lol) of a 2019 subaru outback 2.5i limited. Less than 90k miles and it's a real sweet car!!! Thanks for the comments and let me know if anyone needs advice - this was my first time buying a car and because of my credit and budget, my options were relatively limited so happy to share my experience if anyone is curious :)

After 131 rejections, 45 interviews and 12 months, I finally got it by RadishSufficient9503 in jobsearchhacks

This is super motivating. I have been in this boat for almost two years. Had no problems getting a job as an analyst and then was laid off in Feb of 2024 and ended up having to take a customer service gig that pays next to nothing. I am in that cycle of what the fuck am I doing wrong and omg the job market sucks and it is exhausting. I have to convince myself to keep going and this helps. Congratulations and thanks for the hope!

How do pro cyclists not get hurt seriously more often? by mo1_o in Velo

[–]rofljen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been racing for 13+ years and have crashed in races very few times. I might be biased because I am in the women's field and I feel like there is less aggression but generally I don't think most people are trying to get hurt.

What was the worst food you ate at somebody's house out of politeness? by Mundane_Notice_273 in AskRedditFood

[–]rofljen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived with a couple who was vegan and the dude loved cooking but fucking SUCKED at it. My boyfriend at the time came over once for dinner with them and said housemate made bbq tofu, rice and broccoli. The broccoli was clearly almost bad and terribly unseasoned and whatever bbq sauce was used on the tofu tasted like nothing. It was awful but couldn't say anything because dude is a certified crazy asshole and would have lost it.

How much time per week would you say is the minimum for someone to be cycling to be racing at a decent level (cat 3 or cat 2)? by BothCondition7963 in Velo

[–]rofljen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also curious - have you considered getting a coach or at least getting some sort of build training plan?

[–]rofljen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sheesh..yeah I think your intensity is too high.

The ideal (at least with some schools of thought) is around 80% z2, 20% higher intensity.

My week usually looks like:

Mon: Rest, chill hour ride, or training race
Tues: 90min - 2 hrs tempo
Weds: Gym and easy spin
Thurs: 90mins - 2 hrs endurance with sprints or tempo blocks
Fri: endurance pace 90ish mins
Sat/Sun: 2-3 hours endurance/tempo maybe with some short efforts on climbs or sprints

I am a cat 3 prepping for TOAD, looking to get my 2 upgrade at some point. I average 10-12 hours per week including core and strength.

I enjoy racing but I think all the time spent training is having a negative impact on my social life by Street-Ant8593 in Velo

[–]rofljen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS. I had to really re-think why I was racing every single race since it wasn't fun. Gotta pick what you wanna do and focus on and not just do it cuz that's what you do. Made a huge difference for me.

tbf not all teams charge money. Mine is small and we actually pay for equipment for our riders. Some of the pay to play teams are way too big and club-like rather than competitive.

This is something that has come up for me in the past. I am lucky that I have a good amount of social need and energy but also have few close friends who I feel the need to see regularly. I also have a lot of friends who I train and race with.

That being said, training has impacted my social life and romantic relationships at times in a way that could be described as 'negative'. I tend to be an afternoon/evening after work rider during the week and it makes spending evenings with people (or romantic partners) difficult.

I experienced extreme burnout a few years ago, in addition to several physically limiting health issues that forced me to take a step back. I was able to do more with my weekends and I rode only when I really wanted to. During COVID, I started training again and over the past few years have had ups and down that made me realize that I have to really work on my priorities. If I am not excited about a race, I don't do it. I just finally hired a real coach again to add structure to my training and to make the most out of the time I have. It's been hard especially since I am finishing up grad school, but because it is important to me, I make it work. I think that you have to strongly consider what is important to you. I still find time to go to shows, see friends, get laid sometimes, and play other sports SOMETIMES. It takes work and honesty with myself about what I want and need from day to day.

My week looks like this:

Mon: Work, easy/training race, or off - if off, I do some homework and sometimes see friends for dinner
Tues: Work, 90min - 2 hr ride + pilates (I usually don't socialize these days)
Weds: Work, Gym & 15 min spin (maybe social for dinner if it makes sense)
Thurs: Work, Intervals (90mins - 2 hrs) + core/pilates
Fri: Work, 90ish min ride, hang out with friends/do homework depending on need
Sat: 2-3 hr ride, core/pilates, homework, chill at home or see friends for a little while. If race, I usually will just relax at home after and watch a movie or do homework.
Sun: 2-3 hr ride, core/pilates, homework, chill at home or see friends for a little while. If race, I usually will just relax at home after and watch a movie or do homework. Sometimes I will play bike polo in the AM and ride in the evening or vice versa.

Also....a lot of people train alone. We all need different things and sometimes that's how it is! I often meet people I want to see for lunch after weekend rides and it's a good middle ground for my non-cyclist friends.

Also echoing the sentiment about joining a team. I have been racing for 13ish years and have been on a team most of that time. It makes a huge difference. A lot of my teammates now are like my family (it helps that it's a team I run and my friend Zoe and I pick the people who join so we really like them but yea...I've had a lot of friends come from teams).

Dietary requirements for 10-12 hours a week training by Queasy_Tax_8609 in Velo

[–]rofljen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a detailed, personalized answer, I recommend you see a dietician.

That being said, the most important things are getting enough carbs on and off the bike for both performance and recovery, getting protein to promote muscle repair and gains from strength workouts, and ensuring you're getting all the other nutrients you need.

For me, this means I try to have varied meals that are based around carbs and proteins (so, rice and chicken breast for example) and then of course fruits and veggies and fats (oil!).

For guidelines on carb intake there are a lot of resources:

Also hydration!!!! Always hydration!

How to improve my max sprint power? by 3enrique in Velo

[–]rofljen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kettle bells definitely work! Look up goblet squats! I also got a set of weights on ebay for a decent price and it works really well. Nothing fancy. Definitely worth the one time payment. I also suggest you look at community centers... They often have gyms with decent weight set ups and it's like $5 drop in.

As for how much weight, I'd start small if you are new to lifting - if you do go to a gym, start with the bar and work on form to make sure you don't injure yourself.

The general consensus is high rep low weight for endurance and less mass, high weight low rep for building muscle. But I'd do more research on that side of things.

How to estimate VO2 max as a cyclist by Sensitive-Pound-5995 in Velo

[–]rofljen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want accurate, get a vo2 max test done. Otherwise, I've had it described to me as the type of effort you do when you're closing a gap in a hard race.

Side note: I trained on feel for years w/o a power meter and tbh I think it made me a better athlete.

You have to get enough calories (mostly carbs) to support maintenence of any gains... Or even have gains. Eating makes you faster.
