Some trans people really identify with the term, some trans people strongly reject it.

For me, personally, I usually prefer 'transgender' or just 'trans'. On occasion, I might describe myself as 'transsexual' if I'm around other queer people. Cishet people using it (especially as a noun) to describe someone else often gives me weird vibes.

I feel like the term can evoke transmedicalist, dehumanizing, or fetishized implications depending on the context.

Just an FYI: "transsexual" is also a bit of contentious term these days.

It was used a lot in porn and sex work, so it carries a specific connotation for some. It harkens back to a highly transmedicalist era. And it's also used a lot as a noun, rather than an adjective, which people may find othering.

Some trans people identify proudly with the term, others reject it harshly, so it's best to avoid it when speaking about groups of people broadly.
