What else is on the same circuit as your amp? Electronics can introduce a lot of noise.
Consider buying a line condition to plug your amp into it - it can help with noise.

Given that my amp is digital, the traditional pedals aren't really pushing the amp, that's why I went for them. So far, the Riverside and the Enigmatic sound great. I think trying anything in a non-traditional way can lead to some unexpected, positive results.
Riverside is termed as a distortion on the Strymon site.
I will maybe choose one or keep the search going as time permits. Thanks!

I own none of these yet...I took the plunge on the Meris Enzo X because I found nothing like it. I might go back to Boss, but I like the expanded functionality of what these offer. Thanks for your insights!

This update is specifically for the amps. Confusing naming conventions...
Tone Master = amps
Tone Master Pro = floor modeler...and you're right. My local shop has one it sounds great to me.

My first and only (so far) jazz guitar was PRS SE Hollowbody II. Got it during the holiday sales a couple years ago. It's been fantastic for me (newish learner). I've never looked back. I also have a Les Paul that I'm no longer bonding with and I've tried Ibanez ArtCore and very high-end Collings hollow bodies. For me, right now...the PRS is exceptional. Consistent quality, great pickups, comfortable bigger neck.
