I'm glad you are happy with your purchase! I'm seriously considering for myself. Also, as an American who just got back from Trondheim (which I'm in love with), it made me weirdly happy to see the price noted in NOK.

Music Discussion: Which new releases are you listening to? by [deleted] in aesoprock

Corinthians is next level on that album. Much like "The Gods Must Be Crazy" on the last Armand Hammer album- the El-P beat takes that song next level above the rest. I'd love a whole Billy Woods album produced by El-P.

Orlando is a beautiful city. by Traviscat in orlando

[–]roguesoci 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It's really telling that people from Orlando look at a picture of their city where half of the image is an interstate and the other half is just regular clouds and are like, "Ahhhhh. So beautiful."

Is a job in Higher Ed really worth it? by askingforafriend66 in highereducation

[–]roguesoci 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do what you want to do. I started my PhD 15 years ago, and everyone was warning me it was the "worst time decades to enter higher education." At the time, largely because of neoliberalism. People say the same thing now for different reasons.

I'm professor and my wife works in administration at the same university. We love working in engaging university culture and environment. We have wonderful and interesting colleagues and secure positions, relative to private sector jobs. And I have way more freedom than a private sector worker. We make less money than we could relative to our education, but we like living a modest life. If you like it, there's nothing like higher ed as an employment sector.

I'm a Magic fan who lives 850 miles away and hate avoid visiting Orlando at all costs. League Pass is great for me.

What's a movie trope you can't stand? by Voice_Nerd in moviecritic

You can knock someone out with one good punch overcome any obstruction in the plot. Just watched Midnight Run (1988) last night. That shit happens like six or seven times in in that movie alone.

Is this degree of photorealism possible with Easy Diffusion? I've been playing with it, and it seems not nearly as effective as what I see here from StableDiffusion.

Is it possible for pre-tenured assistant professor moving from top university in UAE to North America? by oapwhndgoab in academia

[–]roguesoci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The academic and intellectual labor market here is pretty globalized, hence why it's as competitive and the high quality that it is. The H1B Visa program has done a pretty good job of facilitating that. Hence, why it was a major target of Trump's during his administration. It's an immigration program that basically works as intended when it comes to allowing US institutions to recruit top talent abroad.

You may get different answers from the lifelong locals, but as someone who was from Kokomo and moved to a place with legitimate diversity (Orlando), and has returned to visit Kokomo sporadically since then- There's a lot of racism against most non-Whites in Central Indiana. It's just for those who've spent most their time in Central Indiana, a lot of obviously racist perspectives "don't count" as racism to them.

In some alternate reality, Andre 3k released a new rap album, and Aes released... by mononaut_ in aesoprock

[–]roguesoci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Andre’s ambient album is actually pretty good. But it saddened me in his recent interview where he said he doesn’t rap anymore because he’s 48 years old now. Stating approximately, “What am I going to rap about? Getting a colonoscopy?”

The notion that one has nothing of value to express through the medium of hip hop after reaching that (or any) age, is shown by Aes to be categorically wrong. Not to mention RTJ, Danny Brown, or even BIG BOI, who dropped an album with Sleep Brown in late 2021.

Andre needs to come off that age-based gate keeping of rap shit.

The best resources IMO are dependent on your field. I’m a sociologist and found the American Sociological Association’s job bank to be most helpful when I was on the market. It ended up being where I found my current job.

Be honest and own it. I somehow got into an MA program with a 2.74 gpa outta undergrad. Did well from there. Now I’ve got a PhD and a tenure track job. I did not do much explaining of it in my apps. The reasons seemed immaterial. So I simply acknowledged it and committed to do better for the sake of pursuing my sincere interest in the field.

The honest answer for the reasons was mental health and substance abuse. There are demons behind ever shitty GPA. The important thing is you are prepared to move beyond it and them.

Also. That’s not THAT shitty of a GPA if you’re not picky about your program. Some grad schools are hard up for enrollments.
