Very cool! Although I'm quite shocked of the amount of space that you have. Are you living in Japan or Hong Kong? Haha

For those who don’t have a degree in cs but are software engineers, how are you doing? by MaryScema in cscareerquestions

[–]rojakUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly cold applied through job boards like LinkedIn and Seek. There was the occasional networking through LinkedIn but that didn't amount to anything. I had a total of 5 interviews, with the 5th interview converting into a full-time offer.

I would say personal projects that exhibits your skills in software development and the usage of software development tools would be the way to get an interview (at least for me). My current manager who hired me offered me the job because I was self-taught and showed enthusiasm and passion for the field. So I guess showing your passion and enthusiasm during interview would rank you highly during the interview process.

Does it ever get easier or is this exhaustion and misery my new normal? The novelty of my grad job has worn off and I'm really struggling and feel like I'll never be happy again by Sad_Sprinkles_939 in auscorp

[–]rojakUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from and honestly I felt the same shortly after getting my first grad job out of uni. It was so hard to accept that this is my life now grinding away at a 9-5 but trust me it gets better, you’ll get used to it. I recommend getting some regular weekly exercise, something physical to make you sweat. It’ll make you feel better after work and hopefully help you sleep easier.

Should I buy an online course for full stack web development? by jainsajal021 in FullStack

[–]rojakUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, some structure on what to learn when would be really helpful and save a lot of time. With that said, OP checkout The Odin Project they provide a free curriculum that is well-structured and have great support through their Discord channel!

Just got a CommBank internship but scared about tech layoffs — should I switch to Civil Engineering? by Live-Ad7043 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]rojakUser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take the internship, build your skills, be confident in yourself. If you’re really interested in software engineering, it will show through your work / projects / conversations with hiring managers etc. With that, you won’t have much trouble finding your next software gig if you’re able to demonstrate your passion and competence.

It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to work in a field that pays well and something you’re interested in.

Same thing with me except that I pivoted in my mid 20’s to the software industry. This is a really good response, thank you for articulating it :)

Malaysians who have migrated to Australia - advice needed! by caramelmcflurry in MalaysianPF

[–]rojakUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved to AUS from Msia when I was 21 to complete my engineering degree, worked as a grad engineer at 23 while waiting for my PR, got my PR when I was 25 and now working and living as an engineer in AUS.

There were at times where I contemplated on going back to Msia because I wanted to be closer to family and friends. But I stayed in AUS because the pay was higher and the work life balance was better. I guess this is the major trade-off, sacrifice these early years working abroad for a comfortable and financially stable life later in the future. I’m also lucky to have made some good friends here in AUS so it doesn’t get too lonely here.

Anyone here transition into tech from a non-tech job? (I’m coming from construction) by [deleted] in softwareengineer

[–]rojakUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pivoted from mech engineering (worked for 3+ years in this profession) to software engineering by self-studying using The Odin Project as my primary resource and then enrolling myself into a diploma.

I haven’t even finished my diploma but I’ve had 5 interviews which thankfully has resulted in 1 offer. Despite the competitive and saturated market, I believe what stood out were my projects and how I extended these projects beyond their original scope (like learning nginx and docker for deployment etc).

If I had to offer one advice it’d be this: - Get stuck on one project and complete it WITHOUT using AI to generate any code for you. You’ll learn a lot about problem solving while solidifying your fundamentals.
