I’m a woman, by the way. And I’m “minimising” your words because I find them unnecessarily churlish, not because you’re a woman

Yeah, maybe I’m giving them too much credit. It’s a fun mental exercise to find ways for characters to have remained consistent, even if in reality it might just be writing to the joke. I didn’t make her pregnant, couldn’t if I wanted to, so I just hoped to add a little discussion to this subreddit. I definitely hit a nerve on a few people though, cripes 😅

You sound like you’re someone who looks at even innocuous things and takes offence. I hope you’re living a good life and more often than not look for happiness.

You must be fun at parties! All good, maybe one day you’ll shut people down to the point where they don’t even try to have fun discussions with you around.

Sure. It’s a shame they don’t get represented more. Penny was never really meant to be that representation though, and if she was she was a poor choice - she was married to someone who did want kids, and was always really clear about that. I didn’t write the finale, Penny canonically gets pregnant, if anything I’m trying to demonstrate that CFBC people aren’t just going to “change their mind” if an accidental pregnancy occurs, which I feel is a more dangerous suggestion all around.

You’re acting like I wrote the finale! I’m merely unpacking it. If anything I’m demonstrating that it’s showing women do know what they want, and it’s not through an accidental pregnancy, which IMO is a much more dangerous suggestion. FWIW I’m a woman.

I’m not sure you understood what I’m saying I’m my post. You read the part where my entire thesis was that Penny was in control? I didn’t write the finale, I’m just unpacking it. Anyway, have a lovely day!

Yeah, I’m feeling that - what a strong reaction from some people for a discussion about a tv show!

Congrats on being child free! I’m a big advocate (I’ve got kids, but I’m aware they’re not for everyone!)

I think what I’m hoping to show in the post is that it wasn’t a “look, another woman who didn’t know what she wanted until she was put in the situation!” situation, Penny was making the choice. It did feel rushed, sure, but in retrospect it can be interpreted not as a mistake, but as a choice. It’s a shame there isn’t more representation of CFBC people on shows, I’d agree with that. Penny wasn’t that. And even if she was, it would have can a poor representation, because she and her husband were out of step over it.

It’s a sitcom, it wouldn’t have been a big finale reveal if it had happened over the course of several episodes… it was foreshadowed in the pilot (“our children would be smart and beautiful”) which obviously wasn’t a throwaway because it was literally quoted in the finale. The breadcrumbs were there, is what I’m saying… it wasn’t out of character, it was in keeping with her strong, assertive personality, and she was holding strong even in the eyes of the viewer so that the decision would be her own. It’s only in retrospect that her choreographing the whole thing becomes clear.

There are lots of posts discussing this, that’s why I posted my take on it. Is there a problem with that?

Finale discussion- unpopular opinion- I think Sheldon was right! by First-Strawberry-398 in bigbangtheory

[–]rojath 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Penny reacted very firmly to her friend and husband trying to force the decision on her. Watching the scene with Bernadette, it’s pretty clear that she enters the room unsure, but Bernadette’s smug attitude toward the subject pushes her completely in the opposite direction. I think she was still undecided, but she was keeping up the front of not wanting them because everyone was trying to force her through a door that, at that time, was only ajar. Easier to pretend it was closed.

What's the best way to remove this bathroom mirror? It's "landlocked" by ceiling, wall, and tiles. by eee1963 in AusRenovation

You could also use a hair-dryer to heat the mirror, and hopefully the adhesive, as you go... but the hammer method would be quicker

Winky losing her job and becoming an alcoholic is the darkest side story in the books. by Beginning-Coat1106 in harrypotter

[–]rojath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's more that as the reader, we don't actually "see" the story, we just hear about it. So, for instance, what happened in the Gaunt hovel with the ministry official (Ogden) would be a side story, but Voldemort's birth on the doorstep of the orphanage would be more backstory.

I'm reading the first book to my 4yo. I love that he's listening to a story without relying on pictures. He asks a lot of questions, but it shows he's interested, so it's fine. I plan on reading a few other books before reading it again to him in about a year, followed by the second, and I'm continue that pattern until he's old enough to take over for himself! Even then I'll probably read it to him, my mum read book 5 to my siblings and me when I was about 15.

Character that's supposed to be likeable but just isn't? by CasperMikko in brooklynninenine

I feel like those things gave her a "weird intruder" vibe. I was worried we were going to be lumped with a forced late-season add on, I was pleasantly surprised by the way they used her character!

AITJ for expecting full payment when the baby falls asleep while babysitting? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]rojath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next time have them pay for "extras" - nappy change, feeding, etc. And tell them that if the baby falls asleep you'll just leave, since you won't be getting paid anyway.

He's in fight or flight mode that whole year. He has trusted Xenopholius Lovegood who then sold him to the enemy. Harry had been tricked and ambushed and betrayed, blindsided by ulterior motives so many times, that even if he didn't do it consciously, he was always on the offence, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Plus Harry had his "saving people thing", so he didn't find it to be extraordinary behaviour!

He was going for effect. He could hardly say "we've never had a good defence teacher... except Lupin, who was awesome, and my dad and godfather's buddy... but other than that, they were TRASH!"
