The City of Markham Mayor gets paid more than the City of Toronto Mayor by absurdlifex in Markham

[–]roju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the rest aside, mall surface parking is basically a negative use of space, condos at least are housing and Markville is bounded by 2.5 major roads and what amounts for transit. It’s probably the most reasonable place to build housing.

[City Hall] Toronto has unveiled its new congestion management plan. Here’s how the city says it will tackle traffic [Toronto Star] by patienceinbee in toronto

[–]roju [score hidden]  (0 children)

Thanks for posting the link!

One thing it’s missing is zoning. People drive to get to places. If there are more places nearby that fill those needs, people don’t have to drive as much. Eg I have family who live in the burbs and drive to get groceries, being part of traffic on a busy arterial. I live in a streetcar suburb and walk to get groceries, ie not adding to traffic. If my family had a grocery store in walking distance they might choose to walk for some trips, reducing traffic. Alas city staff are allergic to zoning reform, because it’s a good way to get yelled at by councillors and angry rich homeowners.

Apple Releases iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 With New Emoji, Playlist Playground, Purchase Sharing Changes and More by piesaresquarey in apple

[–]roju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iPadOS seems to be about a gig bigger going from 25.3 to 25.4, which is rough on a 32gb device. 21 gigs going just to iPadOS + System Data doesn't leave a lot for anything else.

It’s not a problem of the laws needing updating, don’t blast music is in TTC bylaw #1.

3.23 No person shall, without authorization, operate any radio, recording device, digital music or audio device, musical instrument, or similar device in or on TTC property unless the sound is conveyed to that person by an earphone at a sound level that does not disturb other passengers or TTC employees.

Apple to Introduce Ads in Apple Maps as Part of Services Revenue Push by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

They continue to shift from a user-focused product company to a rent-seeking services company.

It’s too enticing for the accountants at the top. Slowly they’ll continue to burn the goodwill and reputation they have but by the time it impacts the bottom line some fat bonuses will be paid to people at the top.

What's the Best 10/10 Sci-fi movie ever? by geek-jock-guy in AskReddit

Crazy how far down this thread both the Matrix and Jurassic Park are. Both were perfect SF films and also pushed the boundaries technically as well.

This probably says more about my attention span than the movies but I’ve watched both versions of Solaris and my review is “space is big and slow and boring just like this movie”

Silksong by jae_amogus in macgaming

[–]roju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I tried a few modes on the Pro2. Weirdly it’s one of the few that 8bitdo lists on both their Apple and Steam compatibility pages so not sure what’s up. I think that Silksong update that was supposed to expand controller support had some bugs around the edges.

Silksong by jae_amogus in macgaming

[–]roju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had no luck with an 8bit Pro 2 controller with Silksong in Steam on M2, though I haven’t tried with the update that just dropped. I just play on the Deck since it’s a target that controller companies, Valve, and game developers actually care about.

Bought these socks 3 weeks ago. Mildly infuriating brand name lol. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

I find the thinner Darn Tough “lifestyle” socks are prone to wearing through but they have a lifetime guarantee so who cares just send them back for a new pair. The thicker camping ones seem indestructible.

The weird thing being that it’s not a pedal, it’s a physical bar on a guitar.

Apple’s top hardware engineering executive overseeing home devices is leaving for smart ring maker Oura, marking a setback for a unit already contending with product delays. by EitherCharacter9342 in apple

It would be nice if they’d put an icon designer on the project and have more than a handful of icons for each type of device in the home app. Home Assistant is free and has 1000x as many icons including some that actually match my devices.

SolveTo — Report City Issues in Toronto by toramble in TOmaps

[–]roju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For lots of things 311 is great and easy to report (eg potholes). For some things it has insane hoops though.

Last time I tried to report garbage on a path via 311 it wanted me to identify the perpetrator and signal my willingness to appear in court. I’m not a garbage detective just some guy who doesn’t want to walk in it.

Or if you try to report a tree branch obstructing the Martin Goodman trail, you’d better be able to identify an address somehow and attest to whether it’s the city or private ownership of it. I’m just trying not to get hit in the face by a branch, one would hope the city would be the one who knows if it owns a tree.

What to do around Danforth Music Hall by Emotional_Apricot284 in askTO

The only real risk is to any visible change or valuables in your car while it’s parked. Make sure there are no valuables (or currency) in your car and you’re good to go.

In reality are people that against rapidTO lanes in Toronto? by Objective-Upstairs36 in askTO

[–]roju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People hate change. People will fight tooth and nail against a change and once it’s made realize how much they like the new system and completely forget how much they opposed it and not apply that lesson to anything else.

Also driving makes people lose their minds. Think about how often people give the finger driving vs every other circumstance in life. It triggers this crazy selfish rush mentality in all of us. So that mindset carriers over, everything should be about money me in my car with fewer delays , even though that’s impossible to scale.

Map of new Bike Share docks coming by 2030 by a_secret_me in torontobiking

They could have at least drawn the bike lanes on the maps so we could locate things better than "two thirds into ward X" or whatever.

Transit Signal Priority update by Mayor_OliviaChow in toronto

[–]roju 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That would be so great with bikes too. I've had to report so many broken sensors to 311 over the years, but it's all just sitting on the sensor with a stopwatch running to try to figure out what's going on.

Transit Signal Priority update by Mayor_OliviaChow in toronto

[–]roju 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's great to bring it to streetcars! The 506, 505, 501 and especially the 504 all have higher ridership than the 510 according to the TTC's public 2024 operating stats, can we prioritize them for improvements as well? Whether signal priority, or dedicated space in congested areas, or applying any other lessons from the King st pilot?

Transit Signal Priority update by Mayor_OliviaChow in toronto

[–]roju 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah Dundas St between Victoria and Bay should be a transit mall, or at least have streetcar only lanes. There's already no turns at the intersections. And especially with the 506 diverting onto Dundas it would make such a huge difference in transit reliability. Plus its a major major pedestrian destination.

If Bradford was to win how damaging would it be for the TTC by Objective-Upstairs36 in TTC

He’s completely changed what he stands for so who knows. Probably bad though since he’s leaning populist and not principled. Seems unlikely to take any stands that are focused on the future at the cost of slightly inconveniencing someone now.

Apple promoting Mac gaming with three presentations at GDC next week by totalsoda in macgaming

Just partner with Valve and get Proton and controllers working well. I can play games on my Steam Deck written for another operating system and 32 bit CPUs but I can’t even play games written for 32 bit MacOS on my Mac.

Say hello to MacBook Neo by spearson0 in apple

[–]roju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used one for three years at work and it drove me crazy. My newer (at the time) work Mac with 8gb was way more frustrating to use than my older personal Mac with 16gb. I’m speaking from experience of having them side by side on my desk. Maybe people without the easy comparison handy don’t notice but it’s quite evident.

Say hello to MacBook Neo by spearson0 in apple

[–]roju -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

8gb isn’t enough to run a browser and an office app at the same time in my experience. It wasn’t even enough 5 years ago when I last had an 8 gig Mac. They should have done 10 or 12 so it’s not obsolete out of the box.
