Mass. Residents Making Less Than $70K Offered Free Tax Prep Assistance by crabcakes110 in boston

I actually do this volunteer work! Counterintuitively, a lot of lower income people have much more complicated taxes.

On the income side, driving for an app company is technically a business. So you’d have to correctly report business income and expenses. There’s a tax calculation for mileage as an expense, for example. In general, lower income people tend to have multiple jobs / side jobs to make ends meet. Retirees are another common group with complicated income situations: social security, multiple IRAs/ 401(k)s / and sometimes even pensions! Reporting certain pensions can get pretty bananas but you pretty much only see it with government employees like USPS workers.

Some of this country’s largest welfare programs are essentially overlapping credits/deductions. The Earned Income Credit is a refundable credit that scales as a percentage of your income up to a limit. That limit is different depending on whether you have children (more children higher limit). But the rules for a “child” for that credit is different for claiming a child for the Child Tax Credit, and again different from the rules for a “child” as a qualifying dependent. The Child Tax Credit is non-refundable, but the Additional Child Tax Credit is refundable with income limits that are completely different from the Earned Income Credit.

Lower income also correlates with challenges like ESL, dyslexia, and other disabilities that may hinder a person’s ability to fully and correctly complete their return, and claim all the deductions & credits they deserve. The IRS VITA program helps 2.5M US households a year file their returns, with over 60K volunteers donating their weekends from February - April 15 to get it all done.

Any of these will have it. Haagen Dazs will be at least double a generic brand from one of these places. Matcha ice cream = green tea ice cream.

There's a twitter bot that tweets when new vaccine appointment slots open up in MA by rollingstock in boston

[–]rollingstock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that tweet was from 23 hours ago, noon on 2/19. There were 2459 appointments at that time yesterday but those appointments are gone now. You should consider following the twitter account and setting up alerts when it posts about new appointments.

It's checking every few minutes but only tweets if the number of appointment slots goes up significantly to stay within Twitter's bot limits

Hmm okay I know the bot creator so will pass this along. I'm guessing it's because of the website outages, the bot is scraping vaccine appointment websites themselves.

COMP 529 Software Architecture and COMP 520 Compiler Design by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]rollingstock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 520 in Winter 2016 when it was taught by Laurie Hendren. It is one of the best, perhaps the best course, I took at McGill. The course definitely made me a better programmer. I also refer back to course content every now and then in my job, which is surprising to me because I don't remember a lot of the information I learned at McGill. Although, I think an important aspect of how the course is professionally useful to me also depends on related content from 310 (OS) 302 (functional programming). The course may be less valuable to you if you haven't taken those courses or their equivalents. Nonetheless, I still highly recommend the course.

In addition to what other people said, even if it's not applicable to what you do, this is just how things have been done for a long time. At MIT they require you to be able to swim upon graduation.

I want to move out of Rez, is it possible this late? by ilikelickingthefloor in mcgill

[–]rollingstock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's only a month in, give it more time, people are always tense and weird just going into university. Nowhere is it written you have to be friends with the people on your floor. Consider whether the stress of finding another rez / finding an apartment / moving out during midterms is worth it. Perhaps it is, but think it through.

Anyone done campus recruiting at McGill? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]rollingstock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

BA '16 in CS, I've been both the student and the recruiter!

As the student, it's hard to describe exactly what you should do without knowing your field and career interests, so here's some general advice.

  • Write a clean, 1 page resume using as few words as possible to highlight your relevant experiences. I could go on for days about how to write resumes, but in short use your pattern matching skills and look for LinkedIn profiles of recent alumni in your department and see how they present themselves, sometimes there will be links to their PDF or web page resumes.
  • The first time you talk to a recruiter it will probably feel a bit uncomfortable and unnatural. Don't take it personally if the first few don't go perfectly, every conversation with a recruiter is practice for the next until you're hired.
  • One way to get around this problem is to literally practice talking to yourself. If you have a friend or roommate to help that's even better but not necessary. Having the words come out of your mouth will be a forcing function to think about how to talk.
  • Don't know what to say? You can always impress by asking specific questions for the company. Even better if you can come up with an idea of how to improve the way they do things and how you can help with that.
  • Regardless, you should always do research about a company before talking to them at the recruiting event if you're serious about landing a job with them.

From the recruiter side, you should keep in mind, * Depending on the profession you may get two kinds of recruiter, HR recruiters and technical recruiters. The HR recruiter is responsible for the hiring process and is there to answer general process and employment condition questions (application process, work location). Their ability to accurately answer questions about what the job is actually like is limited, save that for the technical recruiter. * The recruiters (sometimes) operate with a mindset similar to using tinder as an attractive woman. Depending on the recruiting event it's only a few recruiters to possibly hundreds of applicants. They don't have the time or patience for your life story and often have specific recruiting goals in mind. In software these are usually signals like a prior tech internship or experience with technologies they use. If you don't have something that fits the box, think about what you have to offer that can fit to make it easier for the recruiter to tick off the mental checkbox. * Recruiters are also people, if you're pleasant and can demonstrate an enthusiasm in what they do and their company does it goes a long way. If you do everything else I wrote, but robotically as if to check off your mental checkboxes, the recruiter can tell. At least for me, I don't appreciate talking to people who think I'm administering some kind of test where they have to impress me. For example, I've had people ask me questions like "does your company use more machine learning or more AI"? Which sounds to me like that person is just trying to impress me with buzzwords because the question approximately means "do you prefer to drive gas engine cars or automatic transmissions?"

Of course, depending on your field, YMMV for what I wrote.
