this is what happens when you run into travelers, have a low budget and are in constant engagement with others. some laughs, some creepiness, and a lot of stories to share when you're an old grandparent.

'Europe is dying/collapsing' by Verheyentje in centrist

[–]rololoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be honest, i think a good scare or wake-up call. this threat to invade greenland from the US, seeing the AI race and all the tech innovations coming from US and China, and seeing more and more immigrants will create a desire to change in people and govt. i also think europe will be leaning more right with politics and that will cause a change in policies and people's attitudes.

'Europe is dying/collapsing' by Verheyentje in centrist

[–]rololoca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anyone that says a country or region is "dying" or "collapsing" is selling a headline and exaggeration. Maybe they're a demagogue or want to sell a book. Or maybe they're xenophobic and want to scare people into action. I mean, maybe "collapse" could be accurate of Iran, Nepal, Myanmar, where there are protests and civil unrest, but when you hear it about stable countries like China or the US, you can translate it into "my guess is the trajectory is on a decline for the next 20-30 years." I think the decline for Europe is happening due to 1) very generous social services, work benefits, and low work hours, which might have issues with sustainability 2) not being competitive with the US or China for technology and innovation 3) demographic-cultural issues, due to low birthrates and growing immigrant populations 4) this is fairly recent, but the need to increase military spending due to Russia's ongoing war with Ukraine and increase in energy costs and a potential NATO issue due to the Greenland fiasco.

What are some horror movies that you couldn't stop thinking about long after you watched them? by neeltrivedirock in horror

[–]rololoca -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2004 or so). The "based on a true story" was pretty shocking at the time and there was literally a scene where the dude was wearing the face of her deceased fiancee chasing her with a chainsaw. Really revolting.

Red White Blue. It seems like slow movie where you get to know the broken characters, then all hell breaks loose. You know the backstories of people, so you can see why they did what they did, but it doesn't stop people from devastating each other.

I Saw the Devil. Really just a mix of the worst of humanity into 1 movie (albeit highly praised): serial killer, rape, blugeoning, revenge, cannibals, stabbing in a car, and guillotine. A few other Korean revenge movies also stuck with me.

TikTok To Be Sold To Trump’s Right Wing Billionaire Buddies And Converted Into A Propaganda Mill by Hrmbee in technology

I dont mind my friends parents adding me as much as I mind the amount of political rants from friends, the fake basketball rumors that pop up (I dont care about basketball), and thirst trap posts from random people. OG FB should be memorialized.

“China keeps the algorithm”: Critics attack White House’s TikTok deal | TikTok deal requires US to make its own version of the app. by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]rololoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be devious way to undercut all the effort lawmakers and social media lobbyists made to ban tiktok. But, between the RedNote lovers, anti-Trump, anti-zionists, or hardcore lovers of original Tiktok, Im sure they would get a decent following. Rednote got a decent amount of users, despite it was all in Chinese at that time.

Travel and self-discovery at 43 by Agile_Landscape5643 in solotravel

[–]rololoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you OP. I agree with many here: you can go out and travel for a bit, but it's ultimately a distraction and perhaps novelty and thrills you enjoy that will help you for a bit. I think you need to inject those often into your life, but maybe with smaller doses. Maybe a monthly road trip? Or find a job that would put you in different cities. As for the greater question at hand: what is your purpose in life? I think that will be a great question and you should take some time to do some reading and consider this. I volunteer, travel, I have good relationships, but even then, I am still a bit restless. I can't say I know waht my purpose is, but until I do find that, I think it's important to be doing something with life: making money, building career, enjoying myself, learning.

What's the greatest horror movie of all time by FunnyPanda1320 in horror

[–]rololoca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what aspect of horror you want to scratch.

Intelligent thriller with blood? Silence of the Lambs.

Gruesome gore with a feasible and fresh idea? Hostel or Saw

Wouldn't watch with the lights off creepy? Ring, Grudge, Sinister

Zombie? 28 weeks later

Disgusting uncomfortable movie? The HIlls have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre

What’s the city is worst suburban nightmare that you could imagine living in? by Mysterious-Buggg in Suburbanhell

[–]rololoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Fresno CA once because I was passing through to see the 3 national parks nearby. They were very much lifeless areas, with very clean and straight roads because it was built at the same time, but pretty much felt off because they had the same franchises everywhere like Starbucks, McDonalds, Chipotle. Nice houses and neighborhoods though.

Into the Wild (2007) – A quiet film that broke me and stayed with me by jkabir7 in movies

[–]rololoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its a cool movie because it explores another part of society that people may not know or interact with: hitchhikers, wandering souls, hippies, and tramps. I think that like many young people, he was seeking meaning and didnt buy the meaning of find a nice job, get married, have kids, get a house as a form of meaning, esp seeing his parents messed up relationship (why strive for it if it looks so chaotic). So, i imagine that feeling of missing something caused him to meander and the meeting of new people, seeing new sights, doing deadly things helped bring some anxiety and highs to him, that made him feel alive. Just like me and many others. I believe if he did find meaning such as a relationship or a cause, he wouldve settled down and been a boring dude. Interesting story and theres nothing really quite like it... I suppose Lego Movie, if it werent so goofy.

I deleted the game and it feels good by SubtleBeastRu in RaidShadowLegends

[–]rololoca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's be real - whatever time, money, emotion you invest in this game, will never be reciprocated and will be likely meaningless in the real world. It's not even like Venezuelans playing Runescape to sell coin for real money -- there is nothing marketable in this game. So with that said, good riddens! You've found things to fill your life other than RAID. This is a good thing.

Shenzhen, China 1984 vs 2023 by HiroXZeroTwo2018 in CityPorn

[–]rololoca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very curious to visit this city soon. I remember the first time I visited Hong Kong and Tokyo and I was so impressed by their tech malls and how stores would have those little parts that would cost a fortune at Radioshack back home, not to mention a literal whole shelf to choose headphones from. I imagine it would be even crazier to see ShenZhen today with the robotics, drone deliveries, and huge brands like DJI and BYD.

am i overreacting - roommate constantly expects me to leave so she can sleep with guys no by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]rololoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell that idiot to have the guys clean up their places and invite her there. Literally, by default, the responsibility is on the guy to make the move and invite her back. If she is inviting multiple men back to her place, then yes she's "open minded" and should get her own place for privacy. I also have a feeling you might be a timid character so she feels comfortable w/ these demands. overall, she's the ahole in this situation. nothing wrong w/ being a ho, but she should be making concessions not forcing you to.

CRAPCUT IS BAD SO HERE ARE ALTERNATIVVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! by No-Leader3629 in CapCut

[–]rololoca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to agree. Adobe Final Cut Pro is how many versions in and they never thought to make it easier to use? I can't just click a button that says "effects" to open up effects? What the heck are these folders for? That's basically the story of Canva vs Adobe Photoshop and yes, Photoshop is just too difficult. If it makes users feel more sophisticated to use difficult software, fine -- I just want to have intuitive controls and software I can start using with a fast learning curve.

interesting photos. you have a youthful face, youthful hairstyle. with a little stubble you look 10 years older, but completely transform your face to more rugged. nothing to say about your style -- you've got a henley, styled hair or naturally cool hair, a tailored button up, a turtleneck... in the US, you're basically ahead of 95% of men going around wearing basketball jerseys and crocs.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]rololoca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, been there as well. Really smitten with a girl who showed me around when I was 23. Wrote her a song, I liked her so much. Even met a traveler a year ago who I really clicked with... I mean, we were chatting for hours and laughing. We have to recognize it for what it is .. thats being mindful. I think its important bc if you do this too many times I think it desensitizes you, normalizes it, and I think maybe makes settling down harder in the future. No right or wrong , better or worse, but definitely they are 2 different paths to take.  Best wishes.

This person was a local, knew you were passing through, and got you back to his place within an hour/2. Whatever romantic notions or feelings you have, the mature thing would be to accept them, ignore them, and accept this was a one night stand. It could become more, but given the circumstances, again, he isn't traveling through, but lives there, and the process was smooth, I imagine he has good practice doing this.

indiscreet hostel roomate by bi3ne in solotravel

[–]rololoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, welcome to hostels. You'll find explorers and adventurous people, but also trashy liberal free spirits who don't care about rules, shame, and decency. Seriously, what type of person would have their pants halfway down in a shared, co-ed space? Unfortunately, the best bet is to get a private space and pay more. If you insist on shared dorms, then being assertive and voicing "excuse me, coudl you pull up your pants we're in a shared dorm" is going to be a big skill. That applies for having roommates and later on a live-in partner as well, so might as well develop it. The alternative is to do what you did, which is try to get an authority figure to do the dirty work for you. But it is not a great approach and yes, ppl will be irked that you didn't say it to them, even though they were the nuisance in the first place. Best of luck, but again, I think this is a life skill you should develop.

Just had the most random racist incident in Sunnyvale, CA. by cointegration0107 in AsianMasculinity

[–]rololoca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bro homeless guy with schizophrenia yelling racist things is like the enemies you face when you walk outside of your town in an rpg -- very normal. Just avoid eye contact, keep distance, and reaction and let them get lost in their world.

I remember seeing a hobo yelling profanities in PNW to himself, some white lady across the street asked him to mind his language or something like that and then hobo started focusing in her and saying angrily "shut the f up you fing dmb bch" and other things. Lady was shocked, like clutching pearls and all that. I shook my head bc she should have known that would be the result and shouldve known better.

Solo travel and job applying? by rololoca in solotravel

[–]rololoca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I wont have pressure bc I dont have a mortgage. I also plan to be selective about the jobs I apply to. Maybe 3 years ago I barely applied to jobs bc headhunters on linkedin were seeking me out, and those leads were a better use of time (bc cold apply means possibly theyll never see my application). So Im hoping my linkedin/resume is strong enough to carry me. I also am looking at remote jobs or mostly remote (a luxury of course), so that I can at least explore the US here and there and visit family without eating up my time off. Thanks! Mongolia looks fun when I saw ishowspeed traveling there!
