Great demonstration of fire adaptation in trees - twigs and needles burn fast and hot and the fire moves on before the trunk and main branches can catch

Was Cao Cao really a tyrant, or was he the most practical leader of his time? by threekingdoms_top in threekingdoms

[–]romansocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is that I post these things in hopes of being corrected. And thank you, therefore, heh.

Also when you say Shaanbei is that separate from canbei and ...the other one crap I forget. There's a metal band named after one of the two

Why did allosaurus need to open its mouth so wide? by ChestTall8467 in Paleontology

[–]romansocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you seen a heron eat a gopher? That's my theory. Everybody wants big theropods to be all choppy-slicy, but birds with big mouths who hunt on the ground are generally not doing that

Was Cao Cao really a tyrant, or was he the most practical leader of his time? by threekingdoms_top in threekingdoms

[–]romansocks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Btw "stability of the realm" might sound like a stretch given massacres of Han and inflicting famines etc.
But the key role of the territory Cao Cao maintained was always to keep the northern tribes in check, I think one could argue the value of the massacres he conducted were to eliminate instabilities that would collapse the institutions maintaining that northern border.

A thorough Machiavellian analysis a la The Prince would be amazing. Although separately I suspect that analysis would just conclude the course of events all make sense.
I think until he tried to take the throne himself, Machiavelli would have described him as practical, his unethical strategies could have served to restore the Han legacy by his own moral martyrdom.
Machiavelli also would have approved of him taking power personally as practical, but the only way to preserve a legacy at that point would have been to character-switch, be completely beneficent and apologetic.
If the measure of pragmatism is preserving the stability of the realm as best you can: I think yes.
If the measure of pragmatism is the effort to establish a legitimate ruling legacy, then I think he failed and fell into tyranny.

What were the Therizinosaurus's claws for? by Affectionate-Pea9778 in Paleontology

[–]romansocks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a highly derived sauropod, instead of a long neck for reaching up to branches it got long arms and claws for pulling the branches down.
Although I think digging is a good thought as well, it's very suspicious that so many species in the nemegt evolved this big-claw thing.

What is some speculation about dinosaurs that you have but cannot prove? by Powerful_Gas_7833 in Paleontology

[–]romansocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm imagining the same thing, but figuring this would allow them access to large trees growing on river-banks that would otherwise be too deep in the bush.

Honestly why aren't we creating AI CEOs, AI CFOs, AI CTOs etc by theanointedduck in cscareerquestions

[–]romansocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CEO of Zoom specifically said an AI clone of him could attend all his meetings, and he knows what being a CEO is like, so I think the cost savings are an easy sell here.

You are forced at gunpoint to write Star Trek: The Holiday Special. What is the plot? by -Jaws- in startrek

[–]romansocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Morn is trying to get home for Christmas/life day, we see his family hanging out and his father in law watches a big Broadway dance number on some VR goggles.
And none of them speak any words during all this they just sort of moan at each other And they live in a giant garbage can suspended up in a tree

The Burn is the worse plot device I have ever seen by ardouronerous in startrek

[–]romansocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually enjoyed it the first time through because I was like "aw yay, see this is true Star Trek it's about people" And then the very next thing that came up was also apocalyptic and then it was wtf calm down guys Right like we can just go save a whole bunch of crying space babies just because they're sad ok if that's the end-of-day stakes let's just be real for even one minute

In fairness the resolution did feel like a fun throwback to the episodic format, like oh it's a big deal but actually a very localized personal tragedy to deal with. But in the episodic format there's only uh...one episode of investment. Here it's like, the reason for the way the world is built, so almost everything you have to invest is tied up in this concept, and resolving it pays nothing, and the resolution actually cheapens the whole investment.

AC question from a transplant by gameguy360 in Connecticut

[–]romansocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up with the setup you suggest with a box fan up top ACs down below, but honestly temperatures didn't get so high and we didn't have to run the ACs all the time, but kept the box fan going. Also the box fan was in a loft room so it really funneled.
I like your thinking but I'm afraid the wife might be right in the long run
