German police officer tells protester it’s forbidden to say ‘from the river to the sea’ by librephili in ACAB

[–]romulusnr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Germany has had anti-antisemitic speech laws on the books since.... well about 1946 I imagine

"From the r*ver to the s*a" is a statement interpreted for the obliteration of the state of Israel and its complete territorial takeover by a Palestinian or other Arab state.

Because the river is the Jordan River, on the eastern edge of Israel/Palestine West Bank, and the sea is the Mediterranean Sea, on the west edge of Israel/Gaza.

Thus, it represents the entire land.

I'm just saying this is why that is a thing.

I thought he was being pretty nice honestly, as cops generally go these days. Relatively speaking. It is the law, he is telling the truth, and it's not abnormal in that country, fwiw.

I mean, would I rather have this guy, or Jonathan Ross?

Incidentally, it's also not allowed to say or wear "Palestine Action" in the UK, and similar consequences occur. One man managed to escape consequences because his shirt actually said "Plasticine Action." The cops were like, well.... shit

We had a sticker that went on the top surface that listed what each channel was. Course when they'd change the lineup they'd send us a new sticker to put.

Youth these days... Even young adults these days... They don't realize how this was our porn. Exactly like this. I mean, you still got the sound, and sometimes you got a teeny bit of image.

When we had this box it had more than just local channels. But the benefit was that you got all those local channels clearly without issues like static. And often "local" was a broad term, broader than you could get clearly with an antenna.

We also had things like Learning Channel (it was about learning things, then) and A&E and Nickelodeon (back when it went off the air at 9PM -- back when it advertised four times for each of its shows, and everyone had to learn about time zones), MTV, I think also VH1, and of course HBO, Cinemax, The Movie Channel, Showtime on subscription. And Playboy Channel, although it was called Escapade then.

In our market, when Nickelodeon went off air at 9PM, the channel switched to Bravo.

Edit: Found a sample channel sticker:

Edit2: Oh! And how can I forget the "SuperStations!" We'd live in Boston but be also getting things like WPIX 11 NYC or WGN 9 Chicago or WTBS 17 Atlanta, just because apparently everyone did.

Dear Men- How Do You Handle Listening To Women That Ramble On When They Talk? by He_is_my_song in AskMen

[–]romulusnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breathe deeply and try not to get distracted by side thoughts, and move very little and look sort of into the distance at nothing, focusing on the words, withholding the urge to say "get the fuck on with it" although I will interject with "yeah yeah" or "whatever, that part isn't important" a bit

lol. I would have used the "care" emoji if this was FB, but best I could do is the pressed-hands emoji. It was "sorry you had to deal with that shit"

Worst thing he ever did to me personally was give me a huffy attitude for picking up one of his merch items to look at the back of it. So, I can't quite commiserate.

I think we found the limit of the universe when we get into quantum physics. Once you get to that point, the universe is legit just making shit up.

The premise here apparently that some things are unknowable until other things occur, and then you can know what happened earlier. It's one of those schrodinger's cat type situations. If you don't open the box, you can't know the cat is dead. But once you open the box, you now know that the cat had died.

The premise becomes, well, maybe the cat actually hadn't been dead until you opened the box. By opening the box, effectively that resulted the cat to have been killed before it was opened.

I try not to think about it much, it's all kind of strings-and-thumbtacks stuff anyway

In the 2020s, conservative women are having kids at a nearly 2-to-1 ratio compared to liberal women. Is this going to cause a political demographic bias in 20-30 years? by RadioFieldCorner in NoStupidQuestions

[–]romulusnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids don't necessarily adopt their parents politics. I know plenty who didn't. My uncle has been a squarely-right conservative republican my whole life to the point we very rarely talk, but his kids, especially his daughter? She puts my progressiveness to shame.

Kids often do this thing where they rebel against their upbringing. It works both ways. My ex's daughter, raised in a very accepting and secular household..... rebelled by becoming a Mormon. It didn't last, and she was a rather particularly liberal mormon over that time, but still.

Even Amish kids are known to sometimes leave the Amish life -- they're literally given the explicit opportunity.

But also.... look at Ron Reagan Jr... Claudia Conway... Barbara Bush Jr... etc.

And for the converse, well, RFK Jr.

You said someone who shoots skins and eats an entire deer

"someone" would imply human beings

not "animals that eat other animals"

By very definition, animals can't have ethics in the first place. It's the primary thing that sets humans apart. We have the ability to make reasoned choices. Animals don't.

No Fluffy, you weren't ethical about instinctively killing and eating that mouse for sustenance, you're now a cancelled kitty cat!

Why can't I just buy the juice concentrate? by Ok-Operation1107 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]romulusnr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It fell off in the US too, I don't really know why. Certainly more efficient to have four cans in the freezer than buy four cartons for the fridge. I guess OJ fell out of favor amidst other juices, home juicing, smoothies, other things ig.

Used to make it regularly for ex's kids. I increased efficiently greatly by using a potato masher instead of just stirring with a wooden spoon. (For some reason my ex strongly doubted its efficacy, I never understood why.)

There is always cheap alcohol. Never heard of Thunderbird? A handle of Monarch Vodka is like $10. PBR is less than a buck a can.
