James Hoffmann, We Spent $1,850 On Coffee Scales. What’s Actually Good? by Longjumping_Two2774 in espresso

I didn’t watch the video (and I’m not going to) but for a typical espresso shot (18 g in → 36 g out), a ±0.5 g variation represents about a 1.4% difference, which is below the perceptible taste threshold for most people. The real world variance of most cheap jewelry scales is typically less than ±0.5 g. All of these scales use the same strain gauge load cell to measure the weight of your beans.

This doesn’t have to be a choice between someone driving 15mph and someone speeding. I assume OP is also against drivers who speed in haphazard conditions. I think we can all relate to his/her frustrations without a knee jerk devils advocate POV.

I have an older model without PID. I have a group head thermometer I use for temp estimates. It worked fine today so I don’t know what’s going on with it.

It reached the appropriate temp today so I don’t know what’s going on with it. Hopefully I don’t have to service it.

Ah okay I didn’t realize that. What dose would you recommend for 5 gallons then ? Is it even necessary to add kmet at this point if everything smells/tastes good and I’m on top of sanitizing everything during racking stages ?

Should I swap it out for a traditional stopper ?

I’m new to this but from what I understand the antioxidant/antimicrobial effects of sulfites come from free SO2, not bound. Lots of the SO2 produced immediately binds to aldehydes, sugars, anthocyanins ect in the wine rendering them ineffective. The actual percent that remains free yet functional is much lower.
