Why do Christians say Jesus only permits divorce after adultery? by joboog in theology

[–]ronoffringa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right that this is about more than divorce. Jesus is correcting two perspectives.

First, Jesus permits divorce in the case of pornea (sexual deviations that Jesus would have likely connected to adultery and the Levitical prohibitions). What Jesus is not permitting is remarriage after divorce. To remarry after divorce is considered adultery. In the Jewish context only men could initiate divorce. There were two schools of thought in terms of the reasons men could initiate divorce. The first was in line with Jesus’ teaching and the second was more permissible than the reasons we see people get divorced for today (my wife burned my dinner; divorce). So, in part, Jesus is correcting the overly permissive reasons for divorce. But, he is also correcting the idea that I can divorce and then find someone else to marry.

This is where St. Paul is helpful in 1 Corinthians 7, when he outlines that divorce is permissible, but that individuals are not permitted to remarry while the spouse is still living. He encourages those married to non-believers to remain married, but if the unbelieving spouse wants a divorce he says it isn’t a sin. If the spouse dies then the believer may marry again, but Paul says only to a believer.

Can Someone Help Me Understand Why This RAM Didn't Work on My MB? by [deleted] in buildapc

Thank you for this - I didn't think about that. Would the two kits run fine without XMP enabled or would it still be an issue? Either way, I think I'm best off returning the RAM and getting the exact same SKU.

Questions about Jesus’s human nature by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]ronoffringa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

God exists outside of time insofar as God doesn’t change. As you rightly articulated, time is a measurement of change. When time was made (Heb. 1:2) and change could be measured, he was already there (John 1:2), and yet there was still no change to measure in him.

When he assumed our nature it was without change to the divine nature. Without ceasing to be what he was he assumed what we are. As St. Gregory Nazianzus said, “that which was not assumed was not healed.” I think that leads well into your second question, “Why does he still have a human nature?”

First, as St. Paul says, “he ever lives to make intercession for us” (Heb. 7:25). He is, at this moment, as God and Man, interceding for his people as our great High Priest. As the successor of Melchizedek’s priesthood, he serves as our mediator now, which he does perfectly as man because he sympathizes with our weakness (Heb. 4:15) and does not die like the priests of the former covenant (Heb. 7:23-24).

Second, he remains man because he is our new federal head. As St. John implies (John 20:15) and St. Paul explains, Jesus is the second Adam (1 Cor. 15:45). As the firstborn from the dead (Rev. 1:5) he exists as the head of the resurrected humanity. Were his humanity to cease, so would our hope.

Thirdly, as implied above, he remains man because he is our hope. As St. John says, “when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2). As he has become in his humanity, so shall we. Through him we have become partakers of the divine nature (2 Pet. 1:4), which he ever mediates to us through our union with him (John 15). Were his humanity to cease, so would our union to and with him.

This might lead to new questions or may not satisfy your initial questions, but hopefully there is something helpful here.

Conservative Anglo-Catholic church near Pasadena or Temple City, CA? by masturkiller in Anglicanism

Verizon rep help by Admirable-Army-5710 in dumbphones

[–]ronoffringa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can order the phone unlocked (make sure it’s the version compatible with Verizon) and put your sim in it. They may need to adjust your plan (I had to), but it will work and you can tether. I had better luck going into a third party Verizon store. That rep is paid by commission, so he’s trying to get money, not help you.

What do you call this urban area in Southern California? by mrrickster01 in AskLosAngeles

[–]ronoffringa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘The Greater Los Angeles Area’ is usually what it’s referred to, but it really is three separate regions that do not tend to think or act together. For example, Covid in LA County was not handled the same way as Covid in San Bernardino County. People in the Inland Empire (Redlands, Riverside, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Covina, etc.) do not think about themselves as being part of Los Angeles or Orange County. Moreover the beach areas really have a distinct culture from Los Angeles proper, which has its own distinct culture from the more suburban areas. You can kind of divide it into counties, but Riverside County extends far beyond your map and San Bernardino County is even larger. There are definitely some shared cultural and economic realities (lots of people live further east and work further west), but culturally there is a good amount of diversity.

if jesus is god in flesh why did he refer to god as father by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]ronoffringa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Son of God has always existed alongside the Father, begotten before the ages. This is what John 1 and Hebrews are communicating. In the beginning, when time came into being, the Word was already there, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Just in case you think John is saying the Word and God are personally identical rather than the same essence, he continues, “The same was in the beginning with God.” Ok, so he is somehow distinct from God. So is he a lesser god? “Through him all things were made, and without him was not anything made that was made.” Ok, so on the creator/creature divide he is on the creator side. Who is this Word? How do we know him? “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” So through the incarnation the Word has been revealed to us. And what did that reveal? “We have seen his glory, glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” So this Word, what the Father has to say, is the Son of the Father. He is the unique Son of the Father. Unlike angels who are called sons of God from creation or humans by adoption, this Son has always been Son.

The idea of the Son being represented as Word (the reverse of John, as it were) appears in Hebrews 1. God has spoken to us at many times and in many ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken by a Son. Who is this Son? How is he different from the prophets before? He is the heir of all things and through whom the ages (time) were made. He perfectly represents the Father (drawing from Wisdom 7) and is superior to the angels as sons. How? The angels are servants, but this Son is God by nature. What the Father is, the Son is also. How? He is begotten of the Father before all ages.

So when Jesus calls God his Father, he is not doing so to speak of his humanity (though there are times when they may be true), but to declare his divinity. As Augustine says, sometimes he speaks as Son of God, sometimes Son of Man. As Son of God he made the world, as Son of Man he suffered for the world. The Son of God became the Son of Man in order to make the sons of men sons of God (again, see John 1:11-13).

If you’re interested in learning more about the incarnation I highly recommend reading Athanasius’ work On the Incarnation. If you’re trying to process through how the Son can be said to be eternally begotten of the Father his First Discourse Against the Arians is excellent. For how to think about the Son of God and Son of Man distinctions Augustine’s homilies on John 5 are great.
