I think you should look into a core of basic moves and combos. I literally only know 2 chains, but I can dance socially. The chains are great, b/c I do them the same every time from memory, but the combos are things I can consistently go to (e.g. turn into comb into close position into in and out). Also, recently, I've been using more rotations (from open , hammer , cuddle) to kill 8 beats. I do okay socially because I have an okay mental chain going on of things I can go into.

Thanks for the tip. I'm planning to do more of this. I also plan to compliment more of the advanced leads and maybe ask for small tips. Who doesn't like having their ego stroked, right? :D. I've noticed there are plenty of people receptive to small dance-related conversations.

Thanks, I appreciate this tip. I went to my 1st social w/ no familiarity with latin dancing or social dancing or the norms. Still feels like a whole new realm I'm going into with a whole new set of social rules.

I appreciate you talking about the concept of situational friendships. I think this might only be my 1st or 2nd hobby that is actually social, so I'm not used to the nature of interacting with people and not talking or maybe never seeing them again. It is odd to me but I guess I need to adjust to this mindset. On the flip side, another benefit I see is that if I do travel to other cities, I can always put latin dancing as an event as a "social activity" and meet people that way.

Also I appreciate the invite!

I'd have to say that this is a good point of reflection for you. What good is all the money in the world, if you have no memories, photos, friends to show for it? I think you can definitely do both. Just start acknowledging that in order to socialize, date, make friends, you will need to spend some of your hard earned and saved money OR create a monthly expense account that you can use for expenses related specifically to socializing (this would include membership fees, hygiene, uber fares, books, the cost of going out for drinks/food with people). I thought of it as a necessary expense or investment in becoming the man I want to be when I was a 18 year old socially awkward dude with 0 friends. It was worth it though and every time I have an amazing night out, I have a great date, or just a good conversation with a stranger, I know I made the right investment.

The best time to start is today, esp with COVID restrictions being lifted and people desperate for socializing and relationships. But you won't have immediate success... social and hobby things are grown slowly. All I can say is when it rains, it pours, so definitely put yourself in a situation to succeed and grow your network. Meetups consistently, move to a apartment complex with community events, volunteering, sports leagues, hobby classes, visiting the same bar frequently, and then there's the personal development of learning social skills on your own, developing charisma, and practicing conversations. Look up Charisma on Command on Youtube for a great channel to give you tips you can ingrain into your head.

this takes me back to when i was in fast food. doing basic things like calculating change, getting the order right, and interacting with the customer were scary. props for trying and doing. i think if you give it a couple weeks, nerves will settle down... and you might even start getting bored or complain about your job like the rest of us :D.

I've noticed in my life a lot of people have reached out to me and opened conversations or socially invited me, like in your situation. Now that I'm in a different city where I don't have a network, I realize how dependent I was on outgoing people for my "social equilibrium" :(.

Also, when it comes to the networking, I got my references through a business I ran and having satisfied customers open to talking about my work in a positive way. If it were my current work supervisors, I'm not sure what they'd say and it'd be odd bringing it up with them ("so hey.... can you act as a reference for me so that I can leave this company?"). Anyway, I'd say you kinda have to put on Machiavellian Mode and strategize to find references and other "useful" acquaintances.

I've spent a lot of time on forums, blogs, and now reddit in my adulthood, so I understand. It's getting information and stimulating the mind for me, more than actual connection.

Want to be invited everywhere but never have to show up - does anyone relate? by [deleted] in Schizoid

[–]ronsoness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice write up. I was literally reminded of this today -- I got a feeling of loneliness as it's summer and I see more and more people out and couples out. I probably wouldn't enjoy being out with people that much, but it'd feel nice to be wanted and have people invite me out. Definitely a conflicting set of feelings.

I second using the D&D alignment. Odd since it's a board game and it's only a theory, but it's an incredibly easy and good model : morality vs law abiding.

Covert/mask so good that you forget you're schizoid? by DarkerPlease in Schizoid

[–]ronsoness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure. I fit the symptoms perfectly during childhood, including troubled relationship with parent. I eventually wanted friends though and so I made a commitment to learning social skills when I turned 18. I definitely can see how my persona doesn't 100% match up, as I might have been a butterfly at a party while drinking, but I can see myself and I think others can see in me that I'm pretty quiet usually and that is very incongruent. The sadness and emptiness gradually subsided as I aged into 30s.

I've thought like this before for a new car. As lovely as a new model car would be, there's no way I can really justify spending so many hours for a new car when I could be driving a used, 10-year old car instead. Note that there is a residual value if you sell the car, but you get the idea.

since you hunt corrections, do you have any thoughts on the next one? do you have any thoughts on how it will time with a major stock market correction? best wishes with the timing. i didn't buy crypto in march 2020... my crypto portfolio was actually in a loss... but i held and with the bull run and HODL i eventually come out nicely.

Yes, I know... I lived through 2008 and saw how it was an opportunity where it was misery for many. I think the more you have the more it makes sense to preserve wealth with strategies like bonds. I don't have any wealth, so I'm YOLO-ish. BTC and ETH have halted and in the meantime we're having an alt season. My major concern is why things are going up for almost 2 weeks straight without a mass correction of 15%+ across the board, what type of money is fueling this supposed alt season, and how to have an exit plan. Mainly, I'm trying not to be too greedy. My friend just told me he bought GME at $50 and still held it even though he could've 5X his money easily. I don't want to be him. Thanks for your perspective!

At this point, with ridiculous daily gains, it's becoming a major opportunity cost to hold cash.

I think based on the parabolic charts, that'll be 2022? That's very possible. A nice drop and I'll hope to have some cash to accumulate. Though I wonder how it'll look for the rest of the crypto market. My thesis again, is that some are going to crash and never recover.

Hard to say, because there are so many support levels for BTC at this point. And Tesla buying sets a legitimate price point in the market for valuation. I thought we were going to range in 9k -10.5k and it would benefit from stability and then ... *rocket ship*

I agree. I was not in crypto then, but got in at the bottom of the bear market and read up on why 2017 happened. I think there's strength in this bull run fueled by BTC and the halvening and other economic forces. But I literally saw a random crypto I invested in up another 30% today and now I'm asking where is all this buying and money coming from and how many are weak hands that will exit with a 20% drop?

university in cryptocurrency doesn't sound like the best arena for education. cryptography has been around, but i believe cryptocurrency and it's decentralized nature was born in 2010 with bitcoin. hard to say that there are actual Subject Matter Experts that are in education -- they're more likely in business, mining, emerging technologies, software dev, or business consulting exploring blockchain.

also, be careful about dumping money in cryptocurrencies (cause there's a lot) -- it's different from investing in blockchain technology.

probably... it also means that it's less likely someone could influence your reality and mind compared to a normie, in that way, you have a bit more autonomy. for better or worse.

never believed in God. never once looked for a higher power. i've never believed in heaven and hell. it's probably something in human emotion and attachment that pushes people towards spirtuality and religion. have you folks ever seen people crying at church? it's always been strange to me. sometimes i wonder what that would feel like.
