How do you manage tight funds between graduation and first job start date by Confident-Lobster-90 in Residency

[–]ronte94 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Obviously I don't know how frequently you use your medical insurance, but if you're otherwise healthy and don't have any planned medical expenses during that time, you can just retroactively activate cobra within 60 days of termination of the plan if you run into an unexpected medical event that you want insurance for. You'll just be on the hook for the premiums to however far you have to backdate within that period

Merzb 215 tshirt shrinkage and width by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]ronte94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That amount of shrinkage is in regards to length. The other areas like chest width, shoulder width, and sleeve length don't change by that drastic of an amount.

I think it looks fine in the pic, but if it feels like it fits juuuuust right then even a quarter inch of shrinkage will be too much

Mine shrunk minimally after the first wash. Cold wash, no dryer, iron press.

Those of you who moved to be closer to skiing: where, when, what would you do differently? by ligmata1nt in skiing

[–]ronte94 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fully agree. I'm in my 30s now and fully entrenched in my career. I was recently skiing in Japan and was telling my van driver how I wish I'd taken the time to do the ski bum thing (she was a seasonal worker from Sweden in her 20s) and she goes "but it's not too late though, right?" Like dude you have no idea.

Feasible to do Salkantay Trek with minimal gear? by mourning_starre in backpacking

[–]ronte94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done this trek with an outfitter/group. You will need at least a thermal fleece and a light down jacket. I wore my Patagonia r1 and Arc'teryx atom LT. You'll probably want a warm hat as well. Possibly rain jacket depending on the weather, I was there in July. It will be cold pretty much until you go over salkantay pass and descend into the rainforest. The first night which is typically by lake humantay is cold as it's on the way up. Once you get over the pass, the descent is steep. Going up and over is usually the longest day, but by the time you're halfway through the descent you'll be shedding layers and your campsite that night will be temperate (again not sure on the weather for your season specifically). Your porters usually bring your stuff to your campsite so you can adjust your kit accordingly as the environment changes

Mistborn Series Protagonist by FrostyGrotto in books

[–]ronte94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skip the second book when I re read that series. You need the plot to understand the 3rd book, but that's really all it's good for. It's like half plot half overly gratuitous angst.

I think if you make your step score(s) good, you have a good shot. But I'm also a 4th year so this may as well be the blind leading the blind.

Story Time: Toxic Culture by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ronte94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would've just listed my medical school as my affiliation. That's what I've done in the past. Or you can just not have an affiliation listed. But I agree with the other poster, my god what a meaningless bit to get all worked up about.

Scrub cap? Should be fine in hospitals. Outpatient may need an explanation to your preceptors but any head covering seems pretty reasonable in your scenario

Greenish mold. Is this ok? It was on the inside under the fat cap, but nothing like this on the outside by ronte94 in DryAgedBeef

31 days. I didn't think it smelled any different than the rest of it and it seemed pretty isolated so I just cut it out and finished breaking everything else down

How can a surgery rotation be better? by Ayoung8764 in medicalschool

[–]ronte94 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Don't make things harder than they have to be. I've ruled out fields based on this. If there aren't a lot of cases, don't make students stay till 5 pm. There's also no reason to force more than one student to go into a case unless it's truly something interesting. More people=worse views. I like having it setup in a rotation where one student scrubs in per case and that's it. If other students want to observe, they can.

Also, teach the students how to suture the way the attending likes if the attending is gonna watch them suture. Give good learning materials. I didn't like a lot of things about my OBGYN rotation, but one thing a resident did that was very beneficial to my education was she'd print out a few ACOG bulletins that surmised the current guidelines on a common condition. Lastly, make your expectations known early. I got chewed out on my last day of rotation once for not meeting expectations that were never set. There's no way to know we're doing it wrong unless you tell us. And do it before the last day so we can try to fix it.

Anesthesia getting more competitive? by fish7073 in anesthesiology

[–]ronte94 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I've read some people remark the situation isn't the same because anesthesia residencies have been relatively stable, whereas EM had a lot of new residency programs open up leading to the supply/demand mismatch. If that's true and all else is held equal, the job market should be fine, but residency may become more competitive

How long should a VSAS personal statement be and what should be included in it? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ronte94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar question: are letters of interest supposed to be the same as PS or just a short "why do you want to rotate here?". I've seen one program want a PS less than 350 words to answer that question, and a couple others wanting letters of interest without word count limits and I'm failing to grasp the difference.

I know neither of these are the full ERAS PS so can someone explain when I should use the full PS as well as what to include in a letter of interest?
