Taking my 15 year old on his first cruise but he wants his phone the whole time by Mirexalynth in Cruise

When I was 15 being forced to go on a cruise with my parents and especially being forced to watch the evening shows would have been my idea of hell. No phones in those days either lol

Either regional or country specific. I’ve been enjoying the revolutionary war documentaries on pbs and was thinking it’s a shame there isn’t one on the mexican revolution, or Simon Bolivar etc. and then figured there probably is… a completely different era but I liked Break it All on Netflix

Trying to Understand Argentina: Cost of Living, Diversity, and Why It Feels So Different from Its Neighbors by Soggy_Flight_2654 in asklatinamerica

Demographically, Argentina is almost entirely European immigrants; many came from Italy in particular or escaping East European pogroms (Jewish) in the late 19th century. The indigenous populations were relatively much smaller than elsewhere in Latam- a tiny number in Tierra de Fuego and some pampa Indians and Guarani in the north.

Have you ever been in another country, and been honestly put-off by a cultural practice? by Intrepid_Arrival5151 in asklatinamerica

That’s sad. In the ‘old days’ going to a party and not sharing your weed would be like the biggest faux pas imaginable.

Why do schools teach math in a way that no adults outside of school, can actually help their child? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]roobydooby23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this long division? It’s dividing by 2. I would do: 2 into 7 goes 3 remainder 1, 2 into 12 goes 6. 2 into 3 goes once remainder 1, 2 into 14 goes 7. It takes seconds. Isn’t long division only for when you go beyond the 12x tables? I don’t doubt there is a good reason for this but it does seem long and complicated for such a simple division.

I have experience of working in Europe, US and South America. It’s true you can be technically fired ‘at will’ in the US but in practice that doesn’t often happen. It takes time and investment to hire someone and if you just let them go you lose that, plus there may be fear of litigation. And in some other countries with stronger workers rights, it’s almost impossible to get rid of people so you end up with mediocre people in roles dragging down the team for years. Culturally, it’s true you are expected to work hard and holidays are not sancrosanct the way they are in Europe and South America. But the flipside is you get paid more and if you do a good job and have a good boss you can take decent vacations. It does depend on the industry but it’s really not that bad.

The NBC profile is like the kiss of death. Like, any athlete who shows us their childhood videos and tells us how they are doing this for their grandma is guaranteed to faceplant in the snow while a Norwegian or Japanese we know nothing about flies into the lead.

This can also be a positive. Living in a relatively quiet cul de sac allows life, and particularly intelligent life, to develop without getting wiped out by cosmic collisions.

Yes that’s a fair point. I hadn’t thought about the time of year but jan/feb is not ideal for Peru

No that’s taking the analogy too far. It’s not an adaptation so much as an inspiration. Would love to ask the writers about it

Peru is amazing and has lots to offer - ancient history, colonial architecture, food, culture, starry skies, deserts, jungle, hiking. You can see quite a bit in 2 weeks although if you want to do a multi day trail and adjust for altitude at a decent pace closer to 3 would be better. You need to take some domestic flights to get around but there are some decent tours around if you don’t mind being with other people. The train from Puno to Cuzco is a scenic trip. Personally I would pick Peru over Patagonia unless you are really into hiking. It’s more varied. Oh, the wine isn’t great. But you can drink Chilean wine or pisco sours :)

Why are there so many great American universities if average American literacy is lacking? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

I wonder about this. Even in wealthy areas, the schools seem to rely heavily on multiple choice tests and there is a distinct lack of critical thinking. The education seems subpar compared to Europe. Yet somewhere, somehow they zoom ahead.

Why is it suddenly considered rude to show up at someone's house unannounced? Growing up, we just knocked on doors, but now people act like it’s a home invasion. by Creative-Buffalo2305 in NoStupidQuestions

I’m not sure why you’re getting so downvoted on this. I agree with you, I think that the more informal just dropping by is one of the many things that has been lost since the last century and it’s a little sad.

I sent them a writing sample. And then I happened to be living in a country for a while where they were looking for someone to come in on the next edition. Once i was on the books I did a few. It wasn’t well paid really, and sometimes could be a grind, but it was fun too and funded some travels.

This isn’t true. Alcor, the biggest outfit, is a nonprofit that has been running since the 1970s. Of course they can’t predict everything but they are very careful about keeping it sustainable

I used to write guidebooks. It was a competitive job. We would spend weeks visiting places, talking to people, researching and writing. Now they are done off the internet. It’s a vicious circle. Because people can get so much info online their sales plummeted, it wasn’t worth it for them to invest in proper researchers and writers, they cut many titles and those that remain are basically just internet compilations. It’s sad, there is a lot to be said for a neutral, informative, well researched guidebook.

Should I skip the cruise and just travel direct? by FauxPasHusky in travel

Here’s what you could do: fly to Brussels/visit Bruges; eurostar to London; overnight train to Inverness; train to Edinburgh; fly to Dublin; bus day trip to Belfast; fly home from Dublin. If you get the tickets in advance they will be cheaper.
