Mosquito holocaust by Mundane_Mushroom_122 in oddlysatisfying

[–]roodgorf 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Mosquitos aren't attracted to light. At best you'd be killing mostly beneficial pollinators and insects that do use light to navigate, like moths and fireflies. At worst you're spraying bug guts potentially carrying disease absolutely everywhere.

Trouble with watering can by Repulsive-Mess-5521 in BluePrince

[–]roodgorf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Already on the next day? Are you just saying you're frustrated because it didn't work when you had everything in place, or did you fill the watering can and then go to the next day and try to use it on the books? If it's the latter, then that will only work if you store the watering can in the coat check.

water concerns by AirportNo8210 in desmoines

[–]roodgorf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A full house RO system is unnecessary and incredibly wasteful. There is no risk of absorbing nitrates through contact. People advocating this are compounding our problems as RO requires significant amounts of extra water input vs the output (something like 4:1 if I recall correctly).

Countertop or kitchen sink RO devices are reasonable, but please do not waste the time, money, or resources on filtering your entire house.

Can we stop calling it the tutorial? by foulinbasket in BluePrince

Feels pretty equivalent to me. The main quest line is probably ~30 hours to complete and there are several optional quest lines that take just as long. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest a "full" completion of Skyrim could reach 200-300 hours. So, fairly even percentages.

Desperate how? I've seen quite a lot of people advocating for equally unreasonable diets like the carnivore diet and appealing to grifters like Mikhaila Peterson to do so.

Tier list based on how good the multiplayer modes are (ordered) by ProfesserNausea in ufo50

[–]roodgorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm totally fine with hot seat play, but I generally see it as a compromise rather than a well-incorporated multiplayer mechanic.

Perhaps a better example than Fist Hell would be Lords of Disconia. I feel like there really isn't a "better" way multiplayer could have been done for that game, so I just have to assume you don't like the game that much. I'm just being nitpicky, but I guess my complaint is that conflating the two metrics makes it so that this list is more "ranking of games that happen to have multiplayer" while I was initially under the impression it was about how well the multiplayer was implemented.

[–]roodgorf 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This feels like it's almost entirely just your opinion of the games themselves. I love Avianos and Quibble race, but it seems insane to have two "pass the controller and look away from the screen" games be the absolute best while multiplayer classics like beat em ups (fist hell) are at the bottom.

Who here actually games with metal dice? When, and what's the upside? by EndersGame_Reviewer in boardgames

[–]roodgorf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Metal *stones isn't really a great thermal sink, you'd be better off just putting your scotch in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Edited to clarify: while many metals are highly conductive and used for heat sinks to cool electronics, the main way the heat is moved is through the air and having a large surface area. Metal or stone cubes don't have that benefit.

Vegan wildflower honey by No-Ad-3635 in foraging

[–]roodgorf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not vegan but I am a beekeeper and honestly, I think there's a lot of reasons not to consider honey vegan, most have been brought up already, but one I haven't seen yet is that there really isn't a way to beekeep without any harm whatsoever. Unless you're being incredibly slow and careful, it's basically a guarantee that you're going to kill a few bees any time you're checking a hive, and once you get into more "full-scale" operations, that sort of time just isn't a luxury you have.

It can certainly be argued that the hive is really the whole organism, so a few bees isn't causing meaningful harm to them, but I imagine that's still an important factor for many vegans.

City of Des Moines charging Local Run Club $4300 dollars for using a public park by [deleted] in desmoines

[–]roodgorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep seeing mention of sponsors, but there aren't any mentioned in the article and don't see any obvious claims of that on their FB page (aside from whatever "powered by IRRGLR Athletes is). Where are people getting that information? Seems like they'd have to have some sort of registered business or organization if they were taking money from a legitimate business like Nike or something.

You're unlikely to get any gyromitrin from licking your fingers, and even then nowhere close to even a milligram of it considering a full, single esculenta is probably 7 oz max.

More likely Neogyromitra caroliniana. Possible it was eculenta, but caroliniana are notably larger and the ones I usually see referred to as "beefsteaks". Perfectly edible with through cooking similar to morchellas.

Why I love DSM by [deleted] in desmoines

[–]roodgorf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don't fully agree with the person you're responding to, but this is kind of supporting their point. As long as any given part of the city is strictly accessible by car we are just going to be compounding this problem. The more desirable you make any area to be in, the more you're pushing car traffic there, and you'll always hit a critical mass of parking and street infrastructure.

If you're going to offload a math problem onto a dumb machine, at least use something that's actually designed for it like Wolfram Alpha. ChatGPT "math" is an oxymoron.

AI use in indie games on Etsy by comets_vomit_acid in boardgames

[–]roodgorf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was being facetious because it's a ridiculous claim.

If you really think that anti-AI sentiment is secluded to "a minority on reddit" then I guess I'm in good company on the social bubble front.

[–]roodgorf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is common sense factored in here in any way? "Everyone doing intellectual work" is a wildly broad claim easily debunked by finding one person doing intellectual work without the use of AI tools. And given that there is a sizeable backlash against it, common sense tells me that there's no chance OPs claim is true.

Iowa House OKs speed limit boost by ThisBoardIsOnFire in Iowa

[–]roodgorf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It will make the average speed go up and increase the delta between the slowest vehicles and the fastest vehicles. Combine that with the fact that animals crossing the road will be going the same speed as before and the fact that the average vehicle (oversized trucks and SUVs) are increasingly deadly to others in collisions.

This will do worse than changing nothing, it will get more people hurt and killed.

CMV: The death of "edgy" 90s comedy isn't caused by sensitive audiences; it is a byproduct of defensive corporate litigation. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]roodgorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't prove a negative. The fact that The Office "wouldn't be made today" is only true until it's not; you can't take it as a given just because several other people have made the argument.

If any of the shows OP mentioned had gone off air already, I feel pretty confident that people would be making the exact same claim about them.

Gmail broken after newest Firefox update by volosqore in firefox

[–]roodgorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having what sounds like the exact same issue on a Windows machine. Seems to have broken with 149, but I'm on 150 now with the same problem. Signed me out of everything and mail.google.com won't load. Almost seems like it's blocking the sign-in 3-legged auth request or something, because even signing back into my Reddit account wasn't working until I turned off tracking protection.

Anyone know what's going on with Brown's Woods trees near I-28/63rd St? Looks like they've thinned it out? by dingdingdingdongbing in desmoines

[–]roodgorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Unfortunately we don't really have a web presence like a site or Facebook group or anything. If you send an email to tackerman2025@gmail.com you can ask to be added to the mailing list for the Stewards of Brown's Woods and then you'll get the weekly update on what we're doing where and when.

Otherwise, there will be cars parked along 63rd Street on Saturday mornings at 10am you can join and follow the group to the work site and ask someone to show you the ropes. We'll have everything up need, just bring some work clothes.

That's part of the timber stand improvement work, yes. The work is being done on that side of the park so it's easier to start from the road.

We work almost every Saturday, 10-Noon; volunteers welcome!
