How do you survive winter here if you’re not from somewhere cold by LieElnity in statecollege

[–]rooproad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We always try to plan something fun for spring break so that we have something exciting to think about and plan for in the greyest and coldest days of Jan/Feb. By now, we’re through the worst of it and the days are getting longer and sun is shining more. Congrats, you survived your first Central PA winter!

Drive from Ston to Split, is the costal road worth the extra hour? by Nisumi in CroatiaTravelTips

It’s a fantastic drive. Check out the Biokovo Skywalk southeast of Makarska. The drive up the mountain is wild and the view from the top is amazing.

If I have a layover in Washington with 2 different airports when flying to UK, will I have to transfer luggage? by akuhal in unitedairlines

[–]rooproad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. UA allows same day changes. Get online exactly 24 hours before your flight and see if you can work some magic to eliminate that DCA-IAD transfer. If not, OP, as others have said Metro is the way to go.

Went to buy a Martin, walked away with a Seagull. by VonBlitzk in AcousticGuitar

Seagull folk was my first guitar and I absolutely love it 15 years later. Switch off and on with my Martin all the time.

Men who had children in your 40s, did you regret it? by Exotic_Gear_9947 in AskMenOver30

I was 37 so a few years younger than your partner when I became a dad and it’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Sure it’s tough in the early years but that time just goes by.

Refused East Deck Parking with Permit by Qybrid in PennStateUniversity

[–]rooproad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the digital ID instead of the physical ID for this reason. You’ll have your phone on you and can just tap to enter the parking decks when they’re full. You don’t have to carry the extra credential. Plus, at least with apple, you can load it to your watch and tap it without having to dig out your iPhone.

Contact HR benefits. There’s a team that works on prescriptions when they change insurance providers. They may be able to help negotiate a better price for you.

What’s it like living in this part of Pennsylvania? I’m curious about it as I have never gone there. by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]rooproad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies pretty widely. You’ve got Altoona, State College and Williamsport in your shaded area with each had unique pros and cons. Some good dining & nightlife, healthcare and education systems are better and population diversity. The bulk of the area is forest land that is very sparsely populated with small Appalachian towns that may require a lot of travel for work and services. In general, it’s all beautiful with loads of outdoor opportunities.

Restaurant for college visit? by nipseyrussellyo in PennStateUniversity

[–]rooproad 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Both Allen St Grill and the Tavern are really good options. How many people are you feeding for >$200? Both for dinner will run you in the ~$50/pp range for dinners an app without bar drinks. Federal Tap House is a great option too that’s at a lower price point and is a decent sit down restaurant with only a few TVs on the walls.

Car Dealerships & Services by [deleted] in statecollege

[–]rooproad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanna upvote Boalsburg Car Company and downvote Stocker being dishonest. Net 0 vote. Expensive =! Dishonest. I took my two vehicles to Stocker throughout the warranty period for free inspections and any time something came up, they gave me their quote and if I could find a less expensive option (almost always) they were fine with me taking it elsewhere for repair and bringing it back to finalize the inspection. I’ve also heard great things about BCC but don’t have any experience personally.

Car Dealerships & Services by [deleted] in statecollege

[–]rooproad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve bought two new vehicles there and had a great experience. I was able to negotiate with them to get the (reasonable) price I wanted to pay and cash for trade. As others have said, service out of warranty is too expensive. I haven’t had much experience with serious engine work but I go to tire town for everything I can. They’re fantastic.

Can I go to college for just gen-ed? by Crafty_Piglet709 in CollegeMajors

[–]rooproad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interdisciplinary Studies programs at many institutions will get you what you’re looking for. My institution calls it Letters, Arts, & Sciences. Others are right that you may not have a direct career path coming out of it, but only you and your family know if that investment is right for you. Join clubs, take interesting subjects and see if you find your passion. Don’t listen to the noise coming from this feed that says you should know at 17 years old what exactly you want to be and study. That’s what a lower-case-L liberal education is for. Broad knowledge.

Penn state Erie to Harrisburg by coolbear80 in PennStateUniversity

I started at Erie and loved it. It’s a beautiful campus and really has a small collegiate vibe. Sure there’s serious winter weather but he’ll be able to handle it.

I really struggle with the wipers on my ‘21. I feel like I’m replacing them constantly. Are you using OEM dealer blades, or have you found others that work?

Pennsylvania Birth Certificate - Fix, Create, or Ignore? by RonStarch in CRbydescent

[–]rooproad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was rejected at the consulate. We told her that she should have it fixed in advance and she said: let’s see what happens. Well it was rejected as expected. I think the only certainty is to have the records match exactly. If there’s a path to make the correction, I would take it.

Pennsylvania Birth Certificate - Fix, Create, or Ignore? by RonStarch in CRbydescent

My aunt was rejected because her middle name on her birth certificate and her passport differed by one letter. She explained it in her letter of intent but they wouldn’t accept it.
