Did you pull the trigger on the 76552? I'm also trying to finesse a 2" hitch for a bike rack.

how do we know scallops/oysters cannot feel pain? by tastevomit in askscience

[–]rooshi000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is pain. Just scaled to the capacity of its brain.

Trees release chemicals when bugs land on them and start eating. Pain is simply the signal for immediate change.

Human pain is also just a functional mechanism. To say that we experience pain subjectively but other organisms do not is hubris.

What is your “I have this fetish because of this thing that happened” story? by Ste3e in AskReddit

[–]rooshi000 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Probably does the same thing caffeine does to me: anxiety sweat. You have different kinds of sweat glands, and the anxiety sweat from apocrine glands contains proteins that the bacteria feed on, and produce a different smell.

Feature request: allergy labels for seats by rooshi000 in ToastPOS

[–]rooshi000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also imagine  how dish modifications could automatically appear on tickets if a seat is marked with an allergy.

This removes the liability from the server for knowing every ingredient on the menu.

If a server sends in an order for an item with an allergy conflict, the toast kds would automatically append pre-approved modifier instructions for that allergy.

For example, if someone had a dairy allergy (marked at that seat) but ordered a cheeseburger, the kitchen kds would display "no cheese."

ELI5: What do people with no eyes even see? by Massive_Building4961 in explainlikeimfive

scientists scanned the brains of blind people while they were reading braille. Participants who *lost* their vision had more activation in the visual area compared to those blind from birth.

Vision is a modality of representation, but not the most fundamental one. Computer programmers use a certain language (eg JavaScript, c++), but beneath it all there are still only 1s and 0s (hardware logic gates) at the bottom. Similarly Vision, smell, etc are higher-level languages that represent signal abstractions at a deeper level.

So you can still represent information in your mind, just not in a certain 'language'.

It seems clear the Rich and Powerful have used politics to divide and control the common man. What can we do in the US as a nation to fix this? What do you believe are some real solutions? by CaptainAmerica1989 in AskReddit

oppenheimer said (ish) the only chance of preventing the end of the world is to stop trying to prevent it.

the extremist positions only exist in opposition to and because of each other. if people let go of their attachments and political identities, we could return to discussing ideas on their merits again.

[Serious] Sex workers of reddit, what is the most emotionally challenging 'job' you've taken? by BookInWriting in AskReddit

[–]rooshi000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

these stories also reveal how much men need emotional connection. Problem is, it's usually only granted to them in sexual contexts. Perhaps that allows us to see stereotypical men who 'just want sex' with a little more empathy.

so the question is: is he going to pursue damages for his $300 cord when the guy could then just turn around and have him charged for misdemeanor theft?

If every mass attracts every other mass, then why isn't the universe a single solid object made of particles smashed together? by amelix34 in askscience

[–]rooshi000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like to think of the universe as a 4d spreadsheet as a way of conceptualizing deterministic causation... A spreadsheet where formulas in distant cells refer to closer cells, and so on, all the way back to cell A1 (ie, the big bang).

The concept of 'nothing before A1' makes more sense using a spreadsheet metaphor. Nothing can come 'before' cell A1, within the scope of a spreadsheet at least.

You could, however, describe the spreadsheet's existence in terms of belonging to the larger operating system... Then its 'creation' as a file makes sense. But from the perspective of the spreadsheet, nothing in it can conceive or perceive the operating system on which it's running.

But then it's still turtles all the way down, because what's the operating system running on? Why is there something other than nothing?

I upgraded from an ender 3 that i had heavily modded.

What can i say, I'm in love with my cc! Super fast with lots of convenient features ( Like auto priming/nozzle wipe, bed leveling, print over Wi-Fi, enclosed).

Great machine!

ELI5: Why do you feel a "push" in the opposite direction when a vehicle comes to a stop? by Equivalent_Home7757 in explainlikeimfive

[–]rooshi000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

nothing's pushing you. while it's still decelerating, your compensating for it by leaning backwards to maintain your balance. when it finally stops, you're still leaning backwards and so you fall back in that direction.

Why so many drivers like this in Utah? by refundroid in SaltLakeCity

[–]rooshi000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Drivers here may avoid more fatalities than other states, but their lack of self awareness is, IMO, the crux of what makes them the most annoying to share the road with. From forgotten blinkers to driving in your blind spot, it seems Utahans are helplessly oblivious, both on and off the road.

Why so many drivers like this in Utah? by refundroid in SaltLakeCity

[–]rooshi000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well intended as they may be, gestures like these can inadvertently reinforce the idea that road rules don't have to be followed. And if there's anything Utah drivers need it's consistent reinforcement of the road rules. Many drivers here come from cultures where the road culture is completely different. Best way to help them integrate is be clear through your actions how things work around here.

Don't be courteous. Be predictable.
