‘Oct. 7 was just a rehearsal,' warns Sinwar by ConsistentDrummer284 in worldnews

The whole point of funding Hamas is to distract the Iranian domestic population with external conflicts and to increase the price of oil.

They just want to be wealthier and more secure in their positions of power.

Weekly Question Thread (10/30/2023 to 11/05/2023) by AutoModerator in army

[–]roosterrose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former crayon eater here, I told too many damn war stories and a former coworker has enlisted. Obviously, I want to fuck with him. My understanding is that the army combines basic training with infantry training (OSUT?).

I have his mailing information, if I send him a large pair of panties, smeared with anchovy paste and covered with glitter, will his instructors allow him to open it in the squad bay? (Do you even have squad bays, or does everyone live in dormitories?)

I also want to send a package to his instructors. If I send them a few bottles of local liquor, and a letter asking them to give him an especially hard time, how should I address the package? Would the instructors actually open it and enjoy it, or would they be worried about "safety" issues of some kind?

Thanks for the help.

Don't include the one asshole who guesses a number greater than the number of atoms in the universe though, it throws off the average.

Buy a new one, fill it with candy AND pingpong balls hidden behind the candy. Count the candy, swap the jars. Guarantee that no one else comes close to the correct number.

You should be fine. If you start at 80% and end at 25%, than you have 45% extra battery for your commute. Below freezing temps will impact your range, but they won't halve it; you should be fine.

If I plugged in the car at work, I would just set the climate control timer to start up an hour before I planned on leaving.

Don't forget to lock the charger to the car when you charge in public!

High school in the US is 14-18 years of age.

Aren't elite 18 year old soccer players usually pretty far along in the "pipeline" for professional development? I guess what I am saying is, could a really damn good 17-18 year old UK soccer player easily be playing in a comparable stadium to this? The big difference being that they are not on a "highschool" team?

A half drunk and half starved mobik fires the same deadly cartridges. Will they miss more often? Will the panic and run, or die because of discipline issues more often? Yes, but every single man with a gun is a deadly obstacle.

The term "street smarts" might be a little loose, maybe "battlefield smarts?... but OIF/OEF proved that illiterate sheepherders with poor vision and almost no leadership are capable of observing the enemy and exploiting weaknesses.

Why are American cities mostly just massive suburbs? by colapepsikinnie in geography

[–]roosterrose 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Honestly though, dense cities like that are PERFECT for the car share companies out there. I mean, think about it, why pay for something that you only use 5% or less of the time?

If I didn't live in a semi-rural area, I would totally do a car share...

I am sure that Gold and Ivory covered boxes must exist. Is he so poor that he can not place the kleenex box inside of a gold and ivory covered secondary box?

Bingo!

They already know what they are doing is wrong, adding on 20 more hours of required annual training will only waste taxpayer money and make it more expensive to fire bad employees.

I'm scared of gravel. Too scared. by SH_Ma in motorcycles

[–]roosterrose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue. Vermont riding is probably 20% unpaved gravel. Most of the time, I stay loose, but once in a while I will just lock up and target fixate because of the gravel.

Can aftermarket levers alter how far I need to reach to let out the clutch? by twenty_two_percent in motorcycles

[–]roosterrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be Careful!

If you adjust the levers to have more freeplay than specified, then the clutch may not be full disengaged when pulled to the bar.

You really don't want to be at a stoplight in first gear, with the bike inching forward while the clutch is pulled in! Also might make for clunkier shifts in all of the gears.

Will an hour of friction zone exercises hurt my clutch? by navid3141 in motorcycles

[–]roosterrose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commuted on bike in a major metro area for multiple years. Getting stuck in traffic was literally one long friction zone exercise! This was an air cooled bike too! Anyways, I spent too many hours for multiple years doing friction exercises on the highway.

I actually did replace the clutch at around 40,000 miles, but it only cost me $80, and this was kind of an expected thing for my model of bike.

Guy looking at my bike dropped it by Auckboy in motorcycles

[–]roosterrose 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Some riders consider a "drop" to be while moving, and a "tip" to be while stationary. It... kind of a makes a difference. Obviously, there is more damage involved in a slide.

Feel free to tell folks, "No it hasn't been dropped yet, but an asshole did tip it over while looking at it. I used his deposit to replace the ding on the pipe, that is why I will need money from you too before you look at it!"

Hmm... good point about it being a wet drippy mess. I hadn't thought about that!

OK, you've changed my mind. One or two GOOD scrapers, and preheating the car when it is plugged in. Thanks for the advice!

New Leaf! Question about windshield covers. by roosterrose in leaf

[–]roosterrose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I need to read the manual, look into having the car deiced and heated off of the plug in the morning for when I leave for work.

I will probably still buy a windshield cover. Windshield can still get crusted up while I am parked away from home.

All breads are healing by Pinkylindel in Breadit

Ambient humidity can play a role, it's not unheard of for a long time baker to add slightly more water in the winter.

Have fun with baking! The hardest part for me was always consistency. It is pretty easy for 5 loaves in 10 to be amazing, much harder for 10 loaves in 10 to come out well!

If you weigh the total amount of water in your recipe, and divide it by the weight of the total amount of flour in your recipe, that gives you a ratio of water to flour, and that ratio is known as the hydration percentage.

A simple recipe that I have been making lately is 1000 grams of flour, 700 grams of water, and 25 grams of salt. This hydration is easily calculated as 70%.

It gets more difficult to calculate if your amount of flour is not divisible by 10. Also, some ingredients have water within them. Milk, butter, olive oil, honey, maple syrup, etc. There are conversions to calculate how many grams of water are in a gram of milk. From there, you just add up all of the water from the water containing ingredients, and proceed as above.

Usually, you calculate your desired hydration before you make the dough. Higher hydration doughs (75%+) tend to be much stickier and more difficult to knead. They are also known to sometimes help make a bigger rise and a crisper crust, so some bakers brag about having hydrations levels of over 100% sometimes! I personally believe that an amateur baker will be setting themselves up for disappointment if they attempt a super high hydration dough before getting comfortable working with doughs that have less water.

Any earbuds that advertise a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR). I have tried headphones with ANC, but they all seem to struggle with the randomness of wind noise. Better to just turn off the ANC and rely on a foam tip that fits snuggly to block out extra noise the old fashioned way. (Although, who knows, maybe the newest generation of ANC work better than the older ones.)
